It was a very fine speech Mr Redwood. The passion was there. I could hear the anger in your voice. I also thought your intervention with the MP whose speech came after yours was a good defence of Baroness Thatcher.

What did you think of the Labour backbencher's speech on what he called neoliberalism? Have you ever noticed that the Left likes to prefix any ideology it dosen't like with ''neo'' in order to stir up images of Neo-nazism. Personally, I prefer to call it classical liberalism.

This labour government will never stabilise the economy. All their interest lies in short term fixes, which they hope will last until the next general election, and no long term solutions.

Until errors are recognised no progress will be made and the endless round of committees interviewing bankers is surplus to recovery. It's all well and good finding out who did what (or who didn't do what as the buck seems to stop at no one), but it's accounting that tells the story.

Accountants signed off the accounts of RBS and HBOS again last year when they were reportedly still making vast profits and why did Lloyds TSB buy a bank without doing a forensic account search?

Masterly!
Our host shows that if a politician truly listens and responds to what ordinary people are saying and thinking every day in his blog, he can speak the truth clearly and persuasively in the National Legislature.

On regulation:

To be honest just one bloke was needed to regulate the banks.

A big burly security guard type. All he has to do is keep an eye on the reserve ratio.

Once the reserve ratio of any bank goes below a set level he is allowed to go round the the CEO and Chairman's respective houses and give them a good smack in the face - A propper bloody nose. He repeats this each day until the reserve ratio is back to acceptable levels. To give them some leeway we set it at 90%.

Apart from this we leave them alone to do as they please.

Oh and of course reducing the market share % that constututes a monopoly to 15% and then actually enforce it - With the same bloke.

I'm almost tempted to say zzzzzzzzzzzz...

But seriously, it's reassuring that somebody in Parliament 'gets it'. The figures in your speech are truly terrifying, and I am incensed that this malignant government are pursuing this scorched earth policy against the taxpayers. It astounds me that even now there are people still willing to vote Labour. I can only assume that they just don't understand how dire the situation really is.

"intelligent Ministers "

"honest moments, to many Labour MPs”

In this measured, articulate and incisive speech of debate, there are just the two quotes above with which there can be any question mark.
What alarms me is the manner in which these figures are bandied about without any sign from Government of how much we are drowning in this debt. Not just for the period of the few months before an election but for the foreseeable future of children yet to be born.
Brown was reported to have told a disgruntled Labour Parliamentary Party just last summer he would "borrow" whatever it took to keep them in power. I doubt £450,000,000,0000 is a figure they could ever understand.
Well, through the absence of "intelligence" and "honest moments" we are in a crisis that teeters on the edge of serious depression.
I suspect a giveaway budget, loaded with Government credit card issuances to the Public, hidden penalty clauses and “mutton dressed as lamb" vote catching initiatives", will be the finale. A finale I fear terribly.
