Postings to this blog will not be possible from 9pm tonight until 10am tomorrow, 1 February.

The webmaster is changing the technical arrangements for the website and has asked me to advise you all that there will have to be a temporary suspension of the comments service whilst he loads the site onto a new system.

I am sorry for any inconvenience, but am told we will have a better service thereafter. I will of course publish a daily blog tomorrow as soon as possible.

“am told we will have a better service thereafter.”

Will this include an autodelete function for removing off topic autorants of over one rood in area?

After Ken Clarke’s comments today, do you still believe Mr Cameron on Europe? He uses strong language with nothing to substantiate why it would be ‘catastrophic’ to leave the EU.

No do I do not believe Cameron – what on earth is he doing with Lord Patten, the libdems, Clark and Heseltine? Just by actions not empty Cameron words.

If Clarke thinks it would be a “fatal mistake” perhaps he could give some real reasons for a change.

Excellent. I hope progress is for the better, despite that uncalled for comment about auto delete for those who make parallels . I myself usually focus but can appreciate a wild, off the cuff remark others make when they have been affected by the ripples of an issue many cannot seem to correlate. It is called thinking outside the box these days I believe.

Hope you are not going the Disqus route, far too many errors in trying to log on, have now given up on Carswells site.

Does not recognise my password, then asks me to re register, then says I cannot re register, because it already recognises my name and e mail account.

Not sure what changed but everything looks the same! I suspect I know what was done, the “flagfox” browser plug-in rather give it away (nice to see you on-shoring John BTW) and explains the extended -for some- outage yesterday!

If anyone is having problems with the site remembering the “Required fields” they should clear the Cookies that relate to this site, I had such problem, cleared the Cookies and now all seems well again…

Trying again, does this comment a/. appear b/. remain c./ will my “Required fields” be remembered, far to many comments have been vanishing into the ether today….

am told we will have a better service thereafter.

For me it has been much worse, if this was a software update then it’s bad news I suspect… 🙁

@margaret brandreth-j: It is also possible to accidentally submit an unfinished comments, or make an embarrassing typos, I quite like the idea of a user-edit or user-delete function!

    Testing, testing, 1-2-3, testing…

Sorry but this is getting silly and frustrating! John, please read the following as a bug report, I don’t know if others are now having to fill in the “Required fields” each and ever time they open their browsers (in my case Firefox)?! Cookies don’t seem to be working as they should, that is why I’m ‘loosing sight’ of some or all of my comments that are awaiting moderation, the only thing that changed was what ever was done the other day to the server/software…

Reply: I will put this to the webmaster

Further to the above John, I suspect that the life of the Cookies are wrong [1], on my Firefox browser the relevant cookies seem to expire on either Tab or Browser closure. As I said, nothing had been changed in my settings and no changes since seems to have cured this problem.

[1] it seems to be using the setting date-time as the Cookies expiry date-time, thus it is not living beyond the life of the tab or browser window session

Hope this is some help to your webmaster.
