MPs employing family members

IPSA have decided to introduce a new rule that in future MPs will not be able to employ family members in their offices on the public payroll. Existing family members with contracts will not be affected.

I do not employ any family member anyway.

Many small businesses employ spouses as administrative support and office managers without an open recruitment process.

If the spouse can not do the job well the MPs constituents will remove them at the ballot.

Rather than banning the employment of spouses or family members it would be more productive to give us the right of recall.

ALL issues with MP’s expenses could be solved by paying them substantially more, and no expenses. It would then be for them to employ the staff they feel could best do the job.

I would then have no issue with MP’s employing family but it may never happen. IPSA would then have nothing to do.
