Probate fees – a successful consultation

The government issued a Statutory Instrument to increase fees for probate considerably, based on the value of the estate being wound up. There were many objections to these proposals including my submission on behalf of constituents. The government has listened to these concerns. The Lord Chancellor has now written to me to say he has “decided to withdraw the previous proposals”.

He now intends to review the whole question of court fees including probate, in the light of the strong feelings that the probate increases were far too large.

But only as an election is near, so why one earth was such a back door tax ever proposed? They have not even kept the IHT £1 million each threshold they promised many years back by Osborne and yet they were trying it on this this new IHT tax on top. Vote Conservative for tax borrow and piss down the drain policies – but clearly better than Corbyn/Mc Donnall/SNP or the Libdims.

Why should there be large fees for probate? Why is not just – our costs our £x, our fees are therefore, £x. Why does the government seem to think it is okay to use every service as an opportunity to raise tax?

How much does it cost to issue a driving licence?

How much does it cost to issue a passport?

How much does the government make doing these jobs?
