I just looked up a cousin of mine who was retired but re-registered as a GP. His registration details state, “This doctor’s licence to practise has been temporarily restored as part of the UK government’s response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.” I’m amazed that the Department of Health and Social Care does not have privileged access to the GMC register to enable it to do an extremely simple database search.

Sir John’s question might usefully have been as to how such a number compares with those who have returned to their home countries in the European Union – and who this country never had to pay to educate or to train either, incidentally.
