COP 29 needs to answer some tough questions

COP 29 tells us global warming is happening. They tell us too much global warming will happen if the world does not drastically reduce its manmade CO 2 output urgently.

Successive COP meetings have been telling us this all century. Most world governments say they agree. So COP 29 needs to ask

Why has world manmade CO 2 just hit a new high after all these years of COP policies?

Why does COP ignore China, accounting for around one third of world CO 2 which has been increasing its output all this century, and now says it is peaking? Surely China needs to cut quickly.

What is COP 29 ‘s message to India and Russia, large CO 2 producers who have been increasing their output?

What is COP 29’s view of US voters who have just given a big mandate to the Republicans running on a ticket of Drill baby, drill?

Why does COP 29 go forward on national accounting which means you can cut your manmade CO 2 nationally by closing fossil fuel activities and importing instead? This often increases world CO 2 so how does that help?

Why should a smaller CO 2 emitter nation make sacrifices to cut its CO 2 when the large emitters are not bothering?

When will COP and governments tackle the big issue of lack of consumer enthusiasm for net zero products?

What is the latest COP 29 estimate of the total world cost of decarbonisation?

It’s more than that David. The elites at COP don’t really care about CO2 levels.

COP is all about making the populations of the rich nations poorer whilst making a few select people in all nations much richer.

Yes, that’s my sceptical view also. The evidence is there; we never really studied global warming/cooling causes at senior government level – where are the papers? The overt support given to CO2 caused warming by mostly political entities and persons – look at the Damascene conversion of B Johnson. The sudden loss of funding for academics who put their heads up to ask difficult questions – see Nobel winner John Clauser. These are the questions that should be considered.
We are spending as much on this as a war, why not give the same investigative effort?

These questions will never be answered because we are talking about a religion. The whole scam has been given this status by the WEF and UN as a way to transfer wealth away from the old industrial countries to the new kids on the block.
We have Milibrain incharge of our power grid and he is being allowed, nay encouraged to take us back to before the industrial revolution.
Everyone knows this will not make one iota of difference to the climate and as the Americans have shown, they’ve had enough of the deceit.
Many countries didn’t attend the jamboree and Argentina recalled its delegation Milleu calling it out as a scam.

    Good morning.

Some very good questions which, will of course, go unanswered.

What worries me most is the language being used by the government. It seems to be doubling down on its commitment to Nut Zero stating that it intends to be the ‘leader’. That is all very fine if being the leader:

    a) which results in something that is clearly positive.
    b) when there is more than one in the race.

We are, or so it seems, to be in a race of just one with every one else both cheering us on and laughing at us (or our government to be precise) as we go by. What the idiots in charge do not seem to know is, that not only there is no prize, but the finishline is some distance past a cliff edge.

We are saving nothing but losing everything. The only thing left will be pointless government jobs. A universal income (Dole money) and Communism in all but name.

Have these people not been paying attention to world events for the past 30 years ? The Soviet Union has collapsed and China has abandoned the Communist economic model and embraced Capitalism.

    We must be mad ?

“COP 29 tells us global warming is happening. They tell us too much global warming will happen if the world does not drastically reduce its manmade CO 2 output urgently.”.

There is not significant warming (other than those due to the Urban Heat Island effect of building and concrete which hold the heat over night and are often heated.) The World has been much hotter and colder than it is now and even much colder with far higher levels of CO2.

On balance hotter is rather better than colder. Saves us hugely on energy costs too in the UK.

      2. Mark
        November 15, 2024

I guess it will take a new Canute to demonstrate that the tide is an intermittent, costly source of energy that will create problems with grid integration and drive up costs, as well as creating environmental problems if developed on any reasonable scale.

It’s interesting to note that the leadership is not being followed. Instead, countries are pulling away from the farce. President Millei recalled the entire Argentinian delegation, reportedly following a call with Trump. He clearly has his eyes on the riches of the South Atlantic. Perhaps Trump would apply pressure to cede the Falklands on a Labour government? We need some top class diplomacy.
The French minister who was leading their delegation also pulled out. No other major country sent a head of state. Trump will clearly withdraw from the Paris agreement immediately and will likely cut funding to the IPCC at the UN. It’s looking close to the final act for this pantomime which long ago ceased to be about climate, having morphed into a begging bowl and attempt to shut down Western economies (which then would have no funds at all for the begging bowl).

      1. Mitchel
        November 16, 2024

The French pulled out due to their ‘colonial’ spat with Azerbaijan who they blame(with Russia behind them) for stirring up serious trouble in the French overseas territory of New Caledonia earlier this year.

What is the latest COP 29 estimate of the total world cost of decarbonisation?

Indeed and what is this government’s estimate. In reality decarbonisation is not even possible and will never happen worldwide. Even a doubling of CO2 would not cause any significant or harmful warming. Much of the warming they are recording is actually urban heat island effects and the positioning of thermometers. Nothing to do with CO2 or so called Green House Gasses.

So when are the Tories going to admit that Major, Cameron, May, Boris, Sunak and Clair Coutinho have been talking drivel for 30 years? Even Thatcher fell for it at one point. We can only have opinions based on a disemblation of fact, having battled our way through a mass of propaganda. We are at the point of deciding whether the earth is flat or an oblate spheroid.

Most half educated people can agree that climate changes, it has done for millions of years, from the Earths very existence in fact. We can look back through ice cores for a very long time and appreciate that our atmosphere has varied a lot in its composition, none of which halted evolution.

Industrialisation has no doubt produced a share of what is noxious, but we have logically concluded that we must deal with it. We largely have via engineering and science. A process, if allowed and incentivised, will continue. The process of deindustrialisation, and the blatant dishonesty of moving it to another part of the World so we can claim ” It is not us mate” , is just a scam. A scam that allows us to blame others, China for instance, for expanding industry to supply us. A total hypocracy.

If we genuinely wished to produce clean reliable energy we have the means at our disposal. We can even clean up its production using fossil fuel if we so choose. We can reduce our production of waste, or at least move heavily in the direction of harmless natural degradable product if we choose. I could go on, but I leave it to you to work it out.

COP, of whatever number, is a scam to move wealth from those nations that create it to those who want a free ride. It is not even as good a scam as slavery reparations, which at least relate to historical fact. The bit that amazes me is the number who fall for it, many theoretically educated, while accepting that a fair few do so to line their own pockets. On the positive side we now have Donald Trump who vowes like St George to slay this malignant dragon, with the support of the vast majority of his fellow citizens. I wish him every success and hope that his success is airbourne, in the general direction from which we get most weather.

A related question:- A recent Institute of Economic Affairs hitpiece on Kemi Badenoch criticised her for ‘opposing climate-friendly measures’ and ‘actively supporting policies that exacerbate environmental harm’. The article lists Badenoch’s voting record showing her leaning towards ‘climate scepticism’. So why has she said nothing about COP 29 (going on what I’ve seen reported in the media)? What a shame that she has ducked this opportunity to call out Starmer & Co. on the disastrous direction in which they’re taking the country. So Carry On Pontificating (about the climate) has just had its 28th sequel and the story-line is the same as every previous one: hysterical scaremongering about the climate and demands for industrial western nations to decarbonise (which means destroying their manufacturing industries) and to transfer ÂŁtrillions to the 2nd/3rd world, with the Global Elite expecting to gain a considerable amount of it. They cannot answer the questions and they have no intention of even trying.

Why should they? The WEF is controlling Western politicians and the media to ensure that they don’t have to. Our best hope is that Trump exposes the corruption and fraud.

The UN told us it’s a scam:
“Ottmar Edenhofer, lead author of the IPCC’s fourth summary report released in 2007 candidly expressed the priority. Speaking in 2010, he advised, “One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy. Instead, climate change policy is about how we redistribute de facto the world’s wealth.”

Or, as U.N. climate chief Christina Figueres pointedly remarked, the true aim of the U.N.’s 2014 Paris climate conference was “to change the [capitalist] economic development model that has been reigning for at least 150 years, since the Industrial Revolution.”

Superb questions, but I doubt we will get an answer to even one of them – they are not in the business of justifying their destructive actions to us, after they have spent so much time and effort in indoctrinating so many to believe in the climate change religion.

With Western governments now tied to the netzero flagpole there is nobody to force COP to alter course or rationalise. They steer their own course, and our establishment follows on behind like sheep, for it is certain our leaders do not truly understand the science, but they love soundbites.

So, more money will be pledged to fight an unjustifiable and scientifically unsubstantiated set of claims against mankind that we can not afford, while at the same time our country sinks into a dystopian future.

I wonder who paid for them. His material gives great ammunition to Kemi and other Conservatives to attack this useless government.

Paul also explains how NESO (the renamed National Grid) have told Miliband that he will need two complete power generation systems, one solar and wind-powered, the other gas and nuclear to maintain a continuous supply of electricity for when we are without wind or sun (like the first half of November), and explains the massive additional costs on keeping such plants on standby, and upgrading the transmission systems. When will COP and governments tackle the big issue of lack of consumer enthusiasm for net zero products?

It isn’t a lack of consumer enthusiasm – it is that electricity, heat pumps and EVs are too expensive. Almost everyone I know believes in the net zero religion.

    Two additional questions :

Given that the UN Sec Gen says that we are now “in an era of global boiling” and that we are very close to, or even according to some, have already reached, an average global temperature of 1.5 degrees C above pre-industrial levels which is nothing less than an existential threat to the entire planet :

    1) Why is ‘climate action’ still at only position 13 in the UN’s list of sustainable goals? Should it not go to position 1?

    2) Why does Table 12 in Chapter 12 of the UN IPCC Working Group 1 (“The Science”) show no signals for climate change (precipitation, droughts and storms) other than some mild warming (0.14 degrees C per decade according to UAH satellite data since 1979) leading to some loss of ice and snow? And when will this science based table be altered or deleted to take into account the UN SEC Gen’s position that we are now in an era of global boiling?

The last ICE-powered Jaguar has just been built. The company, responding to various pressures, will introduce its all-electric line in January – just as its competitors back away from the madness. How long shall we give Jaguar before it fails? Just a little longer than Ed Miliband lasts in Cabinet?

Reply I used to buy a Jaguar for my own use, changing them quite often . I have no wish to buy an electric one. So they will lose me as a customer.

COP 29 was held in a country whose very existence relies on the export of fossil fuels, they saw an opportunity to sell their output. COP 30 will be held in Brazil a Country that is a larger emitter CO2 than the UK.

The Worlds largest emitters of CO2 that are said between them to be responsible for more than 75% of global warming, did go to COP 29 it is not their ‘thing’ they have to much on their plate in ramping up their manufacturing to satisfy the UK’s demands now that it has closed facilities down and exported jobs and wealth. Into the bargain the UK has increased World emissions by another magnitude

LL, ++++. Nice comment as usual, and that last paragraph is a gem.
BBC this morning was agonising over the suitability of the COP host country choice. That, along with much else, seems to be another indicator that the tide is running out on the schemes they wish to float, a change in the whole atmosphere. Perhaps those attending the COP party are now looking around at their company, who’s there with them and who isn’t, and beginning to get the feeling that the party has gone dead, the beer now flat, only a mess to walk away from hoping that someone else will clear it up.

    The answers:

Q1&2: CO2, whether natural or anthropogenic, has no effect on the planet’s temperature. This is just a scam to destroy the West.

Q3 : Keep going. Our comrades in the West are now designing plans to remove CO2 from the atmosphere which will further bankrupt them. Necessary because we must save the planet.

Q4: Step up the propaganda that the US is destroying the planet and we will do all we can to change the electorate to save it.

Q5: We know this. The first stage is to cause de-industrialisation and electrification. The second stage will involve CBAM, CBDC and credit scores to control food, energy and travel. We are already hitting the small farmers so rationed food will only be available from official, government controlled supermarkets. This will save the planet.

Q6: We aim to destroy hydrocarbon fuels wherever we can. We must save the planet.

Q7 : We are already forcing through the necessary legislation and taxation policies to achieve our Net Zero aims. Finally we will simply cut off hydrocarbon fuel supplies to save the planet whether or not alternatives exist.

Q8: Unnecessary calculation. It doesn’t matter how much it costs in lives and treasure as we must save the planet.

Ottmar Edenhofer, who co-chaired the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change working group on Mitigation of Climate Change from 2008 to 2015 said:

“One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy. This has almost nothing to do with the environmental policy anymore, with problems such as deforestation or the ozone hole”.

So what is the goal of environmental policy?

Ottmar Edenhofer : “We redistribute de facto the world’s wealth by climate policy”.

PS : Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of U.N.’s Framework Convention on Climate Change, at a news conference in Brussels in 2015 admitted that the goal of environmental activists is not to save the world from ecological calamity but to destroy capitalism.

And Greta Thunberg, when promoting her latest book at the London Southbank Centre 30/10/2022, made it clear in her speech that the purpose of CAGW/Net Zero/green activism is to sabotage the West by destroying its access to cheap, abundant and reliable energy.

All very good questions Sir John and the answer is because it is a scam.
A Zero Carbon Electricity System isn’t possible with the available technology.
As confirmed by the National Energy System Operator (NESO) report, requested by Miliband, we will effectively be running two electricity systems, one for when the wind blows and one for when it doesn’t. It is therefore obvious that Wind Blown Energy will always make energy bills more expensive.
The future is probably with Nuclear Fusion and money should be “invested” in that.

  32. outsider
    November 15, 2024

    Dear Sir John,
This is the classic case of some decent and helpful scientific research being perverted by campaigners with an unrelated agenda. Global warming/climate change has become the ultimate weapon for those whose main aim for a hundred years has been to destroy Western consumer society. From the Cold War onwards, they have been trying to show that the huge advance in the freedom, material living standards and perspectives of “ordinary working people” in capitalist Europe, North America and Japan was somehow illegitimate.

In the UK they are still winning. We have ended up with a bizarre paradox: a Democratic Socialist (or Social Democrat) Government dedicated to the proposition that Mediterranean holidays, meat and fish diet and private vehicles should be confined to the few rather than the many.

The obvious way to avoid this while being responsible – a huge expansion of atomic power – has been successfully kiboshed by campaigners. Even James Lovelock, who pioneered the Gaia theory central to climate change fears, was “cancelled” for daring to suggest atomic power as the answer. Ever since the infamous 2003 White Paper, atomic power has been sidelined, delayed and then said to be “too late”. This continues.

Compare this with China’s brilliantly pragmatic approach: pushing through the world’s biggest atomic energy and renewables programme while expanding cheap coal-fired power to build a world-dominating electric car industry.

Unfortunately these questions or similar will not be asked by our official Opposition in Parliament as they, too, are totally in favour of saving the planet by destroying our economy through sabotaging our access to affordable, reliable hydrocarbon energy. It was PM May who put Net Zero by 2050 into law with a very short debate, no vote and no costing. It was PM Johnson who at the UN 22/09/2021 proclaimed to the World at the UN 22/09/2021 : “We were the first to send the great puffs of acrid smoke to the heavens on a scale to derange the natural order”. The current Opposition leader still supports Net Zero.

If this is added to the official Opposition’s support for mass immigration and high spending to justify high taxation do we really have an opposition or even a democracy? It was even the current Opposition’s Home Secretary who created the College of Policing who are now intent to wage war on freedom of speech by pursuing “non-crime hate incident” crimes.

The Opposition were even not able to oppose the Government’s decision to give away the Chagos Islands as this was also their policy.

I don’t know how the current Opposition manages to pass the Trades Descriptions Act. It’s not fit for purpose.

Reply Giving away Chagos was not Conservative Policy. Cameron refused to do it .

China has an Emission Trading Scheme. Whereas, the EU scheme is set at €63 per tonne (UK ÂŁ40) of CO2, that of China is set at €7. This scam is highly beneficial to countries that don’t need to keep warm in Winter and don’t have any manufacturing industry because they get paid for doing nothing. The prices per tonne are set according to total country allowances negotiated at the previous Climate Change Conference. For Northern Europe it means the destruction of manufacturing and the replacement of energy available on tap to energy from cost ineffective, agriculture destroying intermittents.

It is difficult to believe that no one in Parliament has the sense to research global warming/climate change. It is not difficult; there are plenty of good books which explain why it is nonsense.
It is equally difficult to believe there is no one in the MSM with the intelligence to investigate and call it out for the scam it is.

    From elswhere, The Telegraph….
‘The United Nations’ Conference of Parties (Cop) climate summits are “no longer fit for purpose”
‘The letter, signed by more than 20 experts and leaders, including Ban Ki-moon, the former UN secretary-general, and Christiana Figueres, the ex-UN climate chief, said the annual meeting between nations cannot implement the change required to tackle the climate crisis.’
‘The open letter published during this year’s summit in Baku also called for countries to not host the Cop meeting if they do not support the phasing out of fossil fuels.’
‘It came as Azerbaijan’s president hailed natural gas a “gift from God” in the opening speech of Cop29, before criticising Western media and climate activists.’

And from the UK we get the usual useless idiots whose policies are crippling the UK, costing the UK more than all its competitors, while at the same time ensuring that what some perceive as a ‘World Wide Problem’ is increased by UK direct action – the cancel weapon, instigated by May & Parliament, enhanced by Johnson, Sunak and now Starmer. Not one of them thought it through, they were/are so focused on ego and self gratification that no consideration to the real world consequences of their direct malicious harm to the UK and its people came into focus

Today several dinghies have been prevented from launching by French police and one has been ‘intercepted’ by Border Farce, with the occupants now in a migrant processing centre with their chances of deportation being slim to none. Why do our politicians insist on treating illegal immigration as a game of ‘It’s a Knockout’ where those who negotiate the slippery poles and swinging bags are given prizes? Also if such a high percentage of them are found to have a legitimate case by our soft judges how do we justify turning back some of them on the French beaches?

Fossil fuels will eventually become expensive and inefficent compared to clean fuels and e-technology.
And those countries leading the way in e-technolgy will have the strongest economies and the lowest pollution (including in cities – both fuel and noise pollution – and so healthier bodies and so less burden on tax payers).
It’s possible to switch from this old fuel and tech to new fuel and tech without damaging our economy. But we need to be careful and steer a straight course through the extremists on both sides.
Lastly, we won’t have to rely on rogue states for our fuel. We’ll be 100% self-reliant.
All possible. Just need a steady nerve. And spirit of adventure.

      Ed M :

      Dream on.
We still supply 50% of our gas and Norway provides 87% of the other 50%.. We could supply 100% if we kept the North Sea going and allowed fracking.

There is no energy security when putting all our energy eggs into one basket, namely electrification. If the grid is hacked or destroyed by a Carrington event we will be in very serious trouble.

I would also like to know how our depleted armed services are expected to protect hundreds of thousands of wind turbines covering thousands of square kilometres of the North Sea plus all the associated undersea cabling? Or the vast acreages of solar panels? Inexpensive drones could easily destroy our whole energy infrastructure overnight.

I agree with 50% of what you say!
My views are practical and entrepreneurial!
Entrepreneurial in that I support the huge possibilities of e-techology for our country.
And it’s inevitable that the Western world will turn to cleaner fuel and more efficient tech that it runs.
Our fossil fuel companies know this too. Soon they will be investing more and more in clean fuel and the tech it fuels.
        And what is e-technology?
It’s the type of hybrid technology that we see in science fiction.
Our world and economy will become more like the tech we see in science fiction.
Fossil fuels will simply become redundant. They will become expensive and dirty like smoking cigarettes (not that I agree with all this – but I’m not going to protest against the draconian laws against smoking).
