Let me remind Mrs May of the Conservative Manifesto in 2017 – I want her to implement it

On the EU the Manifesto made a lot of sense. It said“As we leave the EU we will no longer be members of the single market or customs union
“We believe it is necessary to agree the terms of our future partnership alongside our withdrawal, reaching agreement on both within the 2 years allowed by Article 50 of the Treaty of European Union.
“We will not bring the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights into UK law.
“We continue to believe that No deal is better than a bad deal for the UK.”

It also confirmed that we will take back “control of our laws” and “We will control immigration”. “We will pursue free trade with European markets, and secure new free trade agreements with other countries”

It is difficult to see how an MP who supported this Manifesto can support the current Withdrawal Agreement.

All MPs should remember the words of the government leaflet to all households before the referendum:

“This is your decision. We will implement what you decide”

And we will have immigration down to the tens of thousands too thanks as per the manifesto.

No point now in reminding Mrs. May.

She never listened anyway. She was always insincere, with her own private, closely-guarded agenda.

That became obvious after Chequers. The likes of Rees-Mogg trusted her for too long(at least he said he did). Then, when the penny dropped, attempts to remove her were bungled.

Peter, It was obvious after the “Kit-Kat” tapes (Sun, March 2018) revealed the complicity of our civil servants with the EU. Theresa May failed to publicly investigate and remove this rot at the heart of the government machine. That was telling.

It was obvious a long time before that, she was doing the same as home sec, promising the voters publicly one thing while pulling the levers of power in the opposite direction.

No moral compass, no holistic view of what decency looks like.

        Completely untrustworthy.

Sadly the dire quality of other MP’s does not fill me will much hope that its going to get much better any time soon.

Which is why we need a snap election – we need to change them. Call it a “peoples vote” if you like. The majority of our current MPs have proved to be either biddable, incompetent or disloyal to their voters and their country.

We really do need to think seriously about applying the law of treason to such people. Politicians who consistently and deliberately lie to the people in order to win support and advantage should ultimately be answerable to the people.

It was obvious when she called those who had delivered 4 electoral victories ‘the nasty party’ and was not taken down – so we left and voted Labour (to bring the Tories to their senses) for 25 years!
May flaunts her Communism in our faces with her renowned communist Frida Kahlo bracelet! And we are told to be afraid of Corbyn! He at least is a Brexiteer!

      JR,

May knows her servitude plan will not pass parliament even if Bercow allowed it. She repeatedly stated delay/extension achieves nothing. Therefore in seeking her extension it only had one purpose to stop leaving without a deal, a clean break Brexit as we voted for.

May has now allowed, seven indicative votes, six for remaining one for leaving! Some of these indicative vote proposals are in exact opposition to your manifesto and her repeated promises.

But hey, your manifesto was broken long ago with May’s servitude plan. She knew it and repeatedly lies to say othwise. She is dishonest. Which part do you not get?

Have a guess what she is up to with her remain cabinet and a remain parliament? Free votes expected to allow parliament to dictate remain!

Together with the DUP bring down the govt. It is your only choice.

Tinned eared deluded May will only stop her quest to remain in the EU if taken away by men in white coates, not grey suites.

Absolute delusion if you think that that will happen. The UK has always had the power to remove, after 3 months, European immigrants who are unable to support themselves. We should be asking why we never did (by the way, we were always allowed blue passports too if we wanted them).

A post Brexit government will have little choice but to amend the rules for foreign workers, almost certainly favouring Europe. Who else do you think is going to be picking the fruit and vegetable and working in minimum wage factory jobs? Do you think that there will be a rush of Brits to fill those slots?

Do you think that immigration. legal and otherwise, will suddenly stop from Commonwealth countries who are already adept at sending ‘extended families’ and convenient spouses?

Before you ask, I am not some ardent remainer but I am a realist.

I believe we’ve been sticking with all these red lines and it isn’t getting us very far.

I think we need to look beyond all this Brexiteer, Remainer, referendum rubbish and try to come together, as parliament appears to belatedly be attempting to do.

Like many, and I believe I am not alone, I am trying to listen to both Remainers and Brexiteers and think of a way forward out of this mess. I sense that many on this site are trying to do the same, and applaud them for it.

Brexit is the way out. That’s why Parliament offered us a referendum to made this final choice. 52% voted for Brexit. Why is that so difficult to understand

The problem is simple. The pro-EU political and business establishment refuse to implement the will of the people. To them, democracy is an irrelevance

You either believe in the sanctity of democracy or you don’t . I do. If Remain had won I would have accepted the democratic decision of the majority

We have people in power that despise democratic intervention. That can only lead one way

Having seen most of it before at some point in our lives, we tend to be far less influenced by flashy con-artists. You might ask yourself whether Airbus, with the German and French Government having large shareholdings, and having recently invested in a mega-jumbo that has not proved popular with the market, is still a profitable company. Certainly, the practice of building fuselage, wings and engines in different countries, then moving them for assembly, cannot possibly be the lowest cost method of building aircraft.

These international businesses with ‘complex supply chains’ may be less of a good idea than you think.

Ask yourself, why is EU economic growth close to vanishing point?

If Remain had won it would only have been because the nation had been fooled by the lies they were fed from morning till night by the Government , the BBC, the rigged opinion polls, the EU, big business, the CBI and the remainer newspapers. Fortunately the nation wasn’t fooled. Yet the Tory Party still has not the slightest intention of making good on its solemn promise to comply with the outcome of the poll.

Couldn’t have put it better myself.

Struggling to find a half-way-house that pleases both sides means that both winning and losing mean nothing. Democracy depends upon political propositions being won or lost in a popular vote and then the winning side enacting those proposals. The winners win; the losers lose … until the next time. Accepting this, we all know where we stand.

May’s approach has encouraged and legitimised the continued campaigning of Remainers because her liberal, p.c. driven politics cannot accept the basic rule that The Winner Takes It All.

(Also, she doesn’t really want to leave.)

Having formally delegated the decision to the people and promised to implement their verdict, it’s a bit rich for MPs to award themselves the final say after all.

Poor Merlin keeps trying to find a way to square the circle. He might consider that a promise is a promise, but to break your word is dishonour. He might reflect too that the responsibility lies with the people, whose shoulders are broader than any politician’s, however eminent or wise, and who will pay the full price for their folly, if folly it be.

Churchill’s motto throughout life was “Trust the people”. Any use to you, Merlin?

I believe absolutely in democracy. So explain why everyone on this site keeps arguing the British people want No Deal? Last time I looked, the No Deal petition had 446,000 signatures and the Revoke Article 50 had 4,200,000 signatures. It doesn’t seem democratic at all.

I agree completely about respecting the referendum, but things appear to have changed somewhat since two years ago. Not for the better in my opinion. We need compromise and I’m not hearing it from either side.

      1. NickC
        March 23, 2019

Merlin, There were no conditions attached to the Leave option – Leave was not conditional upon a “deal”. Therefore the falsely named “no deal” is as legitimate an outcome as a “Canada+” deal.

“Respecting the Referendum” means accepting that the UK must leave the EU treaties. It is difficult to understand how that outcome can be compromised.

      2. graham1946
        March 23, 2019

You wouldn’t have accepted it if we had left 2 years ago or last June when it should have been if Cameron had been a man. Makes no difference, Remainers just looking for an excuse to hang your prejudice on. Petitions are a waste of time and mean nothing. Voting does. How can you compromise between leaving and staying? One has to lose and for 45 years we have been losing, now its turned around and you just can’t hack it. May’s ‘deal’ written in Germany is the Hokey Cokey of Treaties (or a compromise if you will, half in, half out) which is why no-one can accept it.

      3. Andy
        March 23, 2019

Because we didn’t vote for a ‘Deal’ – we voted to Leave. And if you read the ‘Deal’ what Mrs May has actually done is tie us to the EU and allow them to impose all sorts of Laws upon us. That is not Leaving. The EU should have the same influence and say that it has in the USA – none.

Now you talk of ‘compromise’, but the Remainiac establishment and political elite have not sought to do that. And answer this: if your side had won 52/48% just exactly what ‘compromises’ would you be now offering Leave Voters ????

Remain’s share of the popular vote is no higher than in 2016 (Source: Professor John Curtis, one our best pollsters) and the most recent Daily Express/Comres poll puts Remains’ share at 45%.

Remain has the advantage that it has only one option – to be sucked into an ever more powerful, resource grabbing and bossy, Federal European SuperState. We might, if we are lucky, have as much influence on EU Governance as Texas has on USA Governance.

The Leave vote is fragmented into No Deal (the most popular Leave option), Mrs May’s deal (highly unpopular), the EEA/Norway option and Mr Corbyn’s soft Brexit (if different). No Deal is the favourite among Conservative Associations and, according to the Sunday Telegraph, has risen to 44%.

So any additional test of public opinion must be hierarchical:
        (1) Leave vs Remain
        (2) Best Leave option (Leave voters only)

I think that any such choice should only be offered after we have left the EU for two months at least, and is best made at a General Election.

Have you listened to me when I have pointed out that the government has always grossly overstated the economic impact of our EU membership, both in terms of the supposed benefits and in terms of the supposed costs if we leave?

Have you listened to me when I have pointed out that the Irish government has been using the border issue as a ruse to try to keep the UK under the economic thumb of the EU, and Theresa May has been going along with that nonsense as a pretext to give the CBI as much as possible of what they want?

      Merlin,

I think there are two possible (well theoretically) middle grounds. One is staying in the European and trying to reform it from the inside, stop political integration and get some powers back. To a small extent Cameron tried to do th I and failed. The other is to just leave and from the outside seek a free trade deal and seek to collaborate on a case by case basis for mutual interest, whilst giving value and consideration to the rest of the world. I think this second middle ground is that of the so-called extremists, it has been misrepresented as extremism. It is merely seeking to do from the outside (have control but give way when mutually beneficial) what proved impossible from the inside (give power away but ask for back when national problems outstrip union).

I prefer the leave with no deal middle ground job the remain and try to nfluence middle ground. The WA is neither of these.

I am sure you actually know, but to reiterate it begins with the EU stealing our fish, goes through the EU corrupting our civil service, a myriad of unnecessary dirigiste rules, and has now got to the EU destabilising the European economy with mass unemployment, poverty, capital flight, dodgy banks, NPLs, and sovereign debt propped up by ECB invented money. 1. JoolsB
        March 23, 2019

Exactly, it was England that voted Brexit, the one and only time it has been allowed a voice, and it is England that is being kept in a union (x2) that it gets nothing out of except the bill. Far easier to ignore the long suffering English, we’re used to it, than upset the rest of the dis-UK. England is now the only country in the UK and western world deliberately denied it’s own parliament because 650 self serving UK MPs will not allow it because to do so would mean a huge cull in the snouts at the trough.

The Referendum was not “rubbish” as you described it in your earlier post above. And if that is what you think about it, what credence should be given to the petitions that you quote? None should be your answer.

The Referendum was clear and specific. So were the reasons given by voters at the time based on a significant survey sample of 12,000 people. The primary reason given by Leave voters was “the principle that decisions about the UK should be taken in the UK”. The primary reason given by Remain voters were that “the risks to voting to leave the UK looked too great when it came to things like the economy jobs and prices”.

Nothing has changed fundamentally in this division of opinion. Leavers want to take back control; Leavers want to stick with nurse for fear of something worse. It is why the continuing Remain campaign keeps its focus on Project Fear; it is what worked as the principal persuader in the Referendum.

Well I should modify that comment. One thing has changed and that is public perception of Parliament and MPs failing to implement its result. For that the primary responsibility rests with Mrs May.

    10. David Price
      March 23, 2019

The democratic process was we voted in a referendum to leave or remain in the EU, the government promised to implement that decision. The decision was to leave the EU, not remain a little bit. The government has not yet kept its side of the contract.

The way forward is to leave without signing the WA/PD and move to a WTO trading basis as is supported by the EU.

The establishment have eaten away at the original plan and intention using the nice sounding word, we must compromise.
Sorry, but asking if would would rather be hanged or shot, when you are perfectly fit and well and have committed no crime, is not a compromise choice

I’m not sure what you mean about the the 17,3m, we all voted to leave the EU, where as you did not.

      5. Alan Jutson
        March 23, 2019

        Merlin

What should really worry you is that the UK has done all of the so called compromising, to such a degree that we will actually be worse off with May’s deal, than if we were still in the EU.
We take the rules, have no say in the making of them, and pay for the privilege, and the trade talks and many other areas have not even been discussed yet, let alone agreed.

To accept this so called surrender (because that is what it really is) would be utter madness.

Pray tell me what the EU will look like in 5 years time, have you actually read the Five Presidents report and the Lisbon treaty which outlines the plan !

The contents are really quite frightening.

        1. Jagman84
          March 23, 2019

Well said Alan. I witnessed the march of the deluded rabble in London today. If they succeed in overturning a democratic vote, they really do not have a clue about what the EU has in store for them. “Useful idiots” doesn’t even start to describe them!

      6. Robert mcdonald
        March 23, 2019

However the only compromise that remaoners want is for the UK not to leave …I.e. exactly the opposite of the democratic choice of the majority … how can that be a compromise?

      7. Caterpillar
        March 23, 2019

        Merlin,

I think that is an uninformed comment. There is plenty of psychological and economic evidence that compromise is a bad option. (Serving olives with ice cream might be a compromise between two people who each like one option, but …) In terms of one alternative approach – negotiation – Tusk offered a Canadian style free trade agreement back in October after Chequers. This is of course more aligned to what D.D. was negotiating, and is what Sir John (and I think the ERG) wish to table. It is very strange that this partially negotiated result has been pushed to the side, it is easy to recover by May tabling it with the EU, which the EU would have been free to negotiate (within its own rules) if the Government had just allowed the UK to leave on the 29th – mitigate, exit negotiate.

Another approach when the compromise is worse than either of the two ‘pure’ options is to seek the wisdom of the crowd to make the best choice to between them. This is what Cameron did with the referendum.

We are in a situation where the UK followed a sensible wisdom of the crowd approach, was lining up to move to a sensible negotiated solution (Canada plus) and was putting in place short term responses to mitigate the transition. For reasons that only history will show the civil service, PM, government and both Houses of Parliament went against this.

I think much has been uninformed, unethical and biased by an elite. Sir John’s stated approach, (re)table a free deal and just leave would have got things back on a grown up democratic path and allowed a relationship with the EU to recover.

Indeed the WA is incompatible with the Conservative manifesto, so no Tory MP should vote for it. We need a reset. New PM, back to square one, propose a comprehensive FTA with the EU, with WTO Brexit as the backstop. A good starting point would be to unilaterally guarantee rights of EU citizens in the UK, and to propose arbitration to settle departing payments (in both directions). The bogus issue of the Irish border needs to be set aside. After all, what could be a more flagrant breach of the GFA than changing the status of NI without the consent of its people, as the WA allows?

I would like to highlight one more fault in her Withdrawal Agreement:
Why did Theresa May go to Brussels and beg EU for extension to article 50 so her deal can go through Parliament?
She is in fact insulting USA and Commonwealth and the rest, as good as telling them to come back for a deal in two years after her withdrawal Treaty.

“Brexit: ‘All UK had left was the date. We’ve taken that from them’”

Well, not yet, because Theresa May still has to perform another act of betrayal by authorising a minister to amend the exit day specified in the legislation:

      http://johnredwoodsdiary.com/2019/03/23/why-keaving-without-a-withdrawal-agreement-is-essential-and-good-new/#comment-1006221

I’ve just sent a letter to the Daily Telegraph, as follows:

“If Theresa May wishes to redeem herself then she should revert to her previous, oft-repeated, promise that we will leave the EU on March 29th, deal or no deal.

She should not try to use the excuse that MPs had forced her to postpone our withdrawal, because that exit date is laid down in statute and can only be changed by a minister of the Crown after gaining the consent of both Houses of Parliament.

There is no legal basis for anybody who is not a duly appointed minister of the Crown – for example, the Chairperson of a Parliamentary Revolutionary Committee, whether that be Hilary Benn or Yvette Cooper or whoever – to take that action.”

It will be down to her, and she will be damned for it, but so will every Tory MP and every Tory member across the country if they let her do it.

She isn’t the first ‘leader’ to have suffered from the same dangerous delusions of grandeur that ultimately saw nations driven into the ground because of obstinacy and intransigence. Anybody’s fault but theirs, and they’re not above bare-faced lying to get their way.

Thank you Sir John for reminding us of these facts. I hope all of your colleagues act honourably next week and deliver the return of our laws, borders, money and future trading arrangements. These were the issues that won the referendum for Leave. The majority of us. Although it does not alter my opinion that all matters affecting this country should be under the control of our own members of parliament the disgraceful behaviour and sheer incompetence of many from the PM downwards makes me wonder whether this current crop are up to it.

It is not difficult at all. Mrs May did put all those things you said to the country. And she lost. We voted against her. 58% of voters rejected it.

It is only because of our flawed electoral system that you are even in a position to try to push the failed Tory manifesto through, against the wishes of the majority.

What part of democracy do you not understand?

Reply 40% voted for the Labour Manifesto which said they would accept the referendum result, end free movement and establish an independent UK trade policy. Just 17% voted to reverse the decision and have a second referendum.

Those people demonstrating to overturn the Referendum result have not realised that they are Globalist puppets being used to destroy the concept of free and fair elections.

That is what was written, but it was clearly designed that way to con the public.

The entire political process is now brought low and into disrepute by people of appallingly low calibre who should have been weeded out at the selection process.

No-one should be any doubt as to the depth of the anger felt towards the duplicitous Theresa May and the remain members of her government and party. And yet even now, there are those like the contemptible Rory Stewart who creep around her.

We, the people, have to get tough with these losers, but the Tories aren’t on their own. Labour, the Lib Dems, and the SNP are awash with them. Those of us who are across our brief and who are not afraid to hold them to account, must do so.

I aim to ask every canvasser in the local elections and every election thereafter, how they stand on the EU. If they give the slightest indication they have any sympathy for the EU whatsoever, I will make it known they will not get my vote. The last thing we want is yet more of them on the bottom rung of the political ladder.

Bitter? Yes! But then I am justified, for I do not take kindly to being conned by people whose wages I pay to do my bidding, yet fail lamentably.

If you haven’t, you’ll have to be pragmatic and salvage as much as you can from May’s disastrous ‘diplomacy’ and then prepare for a second, party-unity-spapping offensive after the next general election to finish what should have been finished in this term.

I am probably a typical Conservative voter who continued to vote for the party in 1997 even after the ERM fiasco.I have told my MP that I will not be voting for the party again after the drama watched since 2016.

Looking at the 2017 manifesto again I’m wondering where all that guff about a future partnership with the EU came from. The nation did not vote for a partnership, it voted to be rid of the EU once and for all and by implication to govern itself free of foreign interference in the future. I absolutely do not recall even a passing mention in the referendum of a future partnership. Such a relationship would only act to dilute precious sovereignty and so must be shunned at all cost. Trade between businesses in different countries does not require international partnerships, it can proceed perfectly satisfactorily under the framework provided by the WTO.

It’s all dancing on the head of a pin . Brexit you know isn’t going to happen . At present there is a march which extends for 2 miles showing how much passion there is to stop Brexit. Nigel Farage can muster only 40 people to his rally. The choices now are Brexit light after 2 years of further delay or Remain after the next election . How strange that in the end Brexit was defeated by the ERG.

    1. Roy Grainger

The march tells us nothing except lots of people who voted Remain still want to Remain. Totally irrelevant. A march of Leave voters who now want to remain would be significant. Anyway, just clarify, do these people want to remain or do they want a referendum ? They swap between those demands as it suits them.

Wait and see how many turn up in London on 29th. Walking a few hundred miles is a bit more difficult than standing in London on a nice Spring Day waving EU flags about and going home to a nice G&T and a warm bed. Anyway BBC today said he has 200 walking so if we do a Remain style count that must be a thousand. LBC today still saying 700,000 turned out to the last Remain rally when police said it was 200,000.I expect 4 or 5 million will be in Parliament Square this afternoon.

The EU’s WA should never be signed under any circumstances.

It is designed to transfer our country from one treaty we did not like and voted to leave but where we did have voting and veto rights to a new treaty where we would have no voting or veto rights over our laws and taxes and with no lawful means of exit.

It is beyond my comprehension that it could be promoted by any UK PM of any party.

If the EU’s WA does not pass through the HoC and the HoC still votes against leaving on WTO terms, then come April 12th the Conservative Party should inform the EU that the extension would be used to prepare fresh negotiations with a fresh leader and a new negotiating team.

In the meantime the UK will definitely proceed with MEP elections and will take part in all Council of Minister meetings and votes/vetos as a full member of the EU.

    1. Peter

The HoC has already voted to leave on the 29th March. That is the law. I do not know what legality is then atfached to leave if we move the date.

If we leave, WTO terms are the only option until such time as a FTA is agreed. Again this is why I advocate leaving onWTO terms, submitting a draft trade agreement followed by invoking Art 24 of GATT which ensures current trading arrangements prevail until a final FTA is agreed and implemented. If we leave according to the WA we will no longer be constrained by being members of the Cu or the SM..the red lines are accounted for.. If we leave according to the WA then we can start to discuss terms for our future relationship with them as set out in the political declarations. Whatever we do we will never be able to fully get away from the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights if we want to trade with them, we are going to have to get used to the idea that we already belong to many groups UN WTO NATO etc etc where we are rule takers and so with the mighty EU we will also have to mind some of their rules. ‘No deal is better than a bad deal’ yes- but deal means agreement for the future. The WA is just that, an agreement to settle the past..it is not a deal. I think John you’re over reacting about all of this and when we look back in a few years or so we’ll think- what was all the fuss about?

    1. graham1946

What’s that got to do with it.

We are talking now and for the future. They are seeking to impose rules and restrictions on us in the Treaty to hobble our trade and try to make us less successful outside the EU. Actually the UK has voted ‘no’ 72 times and lost 72 times. Lol away.

    2. Tad Davison

I’d rather we left the EU completely, then maybe talk about a trade deal with them afterwards. If they were reasonable people without a hidden agenda, I can’t see why the EU should not accept a ‘deal’ on those terms.

We should be very careful about making treaties with anyone who seeks to bind us evermore closely, for there is always a reason for that catch. In the EU’s case, our ultimate subjugation is what they are after. And if anyone should doubt that, then they need to look at the mountain of laws that have emanated from that cursed place over the past 46 years where the binding ratchet has been steadily tightened to this nation’s ultimate detriment!

First fill the leadership gap and then it could be sorted in a week. There are two choices, stay or leave. Leave is the only choice that satisfies the referendum result and disconnects us from the EU. Doing it without a deal levels the playing field for any future relationship with the EU. We could also go flat out unencumbered for those trade deals we want. To me it is a no brainer but I only have one vote. Start thinking positive. Slightly imperfect decisions taken positively and carried through with vigour are infinitely better than the dither we witness. Ask any soldier operating at the sharp end.

It took centuries to grow organically and it won’t come back. What will come in its place doesn’t bear thinking about. It is a tragedy so many people now haven’t been brought up to value their democracy and its institutions. These have been an inspiration to the rest of the world. It’s in London so in the Guardian’s world that makes it 100x more important than something in the rest of the country. Any Leave march in London would end in violence due to Momentum’s rent-a-mob turning up so of course few would attend one. Anyway, since when did the winners of a vote march to protest ?

    Mr Redwood,

Manifestos are campaign instruments. Pure propaganda and only a weak form of commitment if the party in question achieves an abolute majority. That is not the case here. Furthermore, your manifesto could have promised a free parking place to everyone working in the City but alas, no such places are available and cannot be made available either.

Re the WA: your colleague Stewart (a fairly bright lad I think) had the best defense of the WA I’ve heard sofar: that Corbyn should embrace it because it is the only way to get what he claims he wants (of course being a bolshevik he wants to have a no deal that he can blame on the conservatives, followed by a proletarian revolution) ie a selection of goodies from the EU menu. Maybe he is right and there will be enough social democrats among the Labour MPs that would share his view. In that case the PD should be made much more specific and enshrined in UK law making it harder for a possible (but not probable) May successor from the Eurosceptic wing to create a Singapore on the Thames with access to the EU. One Singapore on the Liffey is enough.

Under FPTP I’m sure Rien in Europe you are used to manifestos being meaningless.
But in the UK they used to be documents of promises.
The issue of the referendum and honouring the result was something special.
The fact that all the political parties have decided to ignore the result will shock the UK electoral system.
There will be a big price to pay at the next general election whatever the final outcome of our relationship with the EU.

The point is, we live in a country where people can march towards Parliament and have a demonstration if they wish.

But if Brexit is eventually refused by Parliament then that is when you will see a much bigger demonstration by those who voted to leave in the referendum.

The petition saw a suspicious jump in signatures last night, with blatantly fake signatures arising everywhere from Russia, to Afghanistan, to North Korea. Tens of thousands of signatures have also come from EU states including Jean Claude Juncker’s tiny Luxembourg. I see that the tens of thousands of spook signatories include Idi Amin, amongst many other long dead nasty people. In short, a meaningless exercise doomed to be ignored…

      1. hefner
        March 24, 2019

Funny that signatures were coming from Russia as I had understood that Russia was pro-Leave and had generously fed you leavers via RT in the spring of 2016. Has Putin changed his mind?
As for Afghanistan and North Korea are you sure their internet infrastructure is either up-to-date or open enough to the world to allow such things. Did you read that on your usual rag website?

Sir John – can you comment on this – I was given to understand that, unless the law is changed, the UK leaves the EU on 29th. However, I have heard that because the EU have agreed an extension EU law overides UK law and we cannot stop the change of date. Can this really be true?

We all want May to implement it…JR. Please mention my name next time you ask her, and tell her I’m personally expecting her to provide us with a WTO Brexit

These seven options for an indicative vote are comical. The majority of them are unicorns, the EU would never agree to them and some have already been ruled out by them, has anyone asked them if they would agree to the others ? And of those that may be feasible has anyone asked the EU what the price would be ? Gibraltar sovereignty ? Fishing rights ? If not how do MPs know what they’re voting for ? The referendum one isn’t even an outcome, it’s just a process, it could exclude Remain as an option could it ?. Any MPs voting for that one also have no clue what it means. Bizarre. I hope they force May to revoke A50, that finishes the Conservatives for good, most of Labour too. The one lever Brexiters have left is that a very large majority of constituencies voted Leave – that’s the way back via a populist new party crossing the traditional left/right split – Macron did it so it could be done here.

As the EU reiterates Withdrawal Agreement cannot be reopened It,s the only Treaty on the table, everything else stems from that. The only choice is in or out an we have had that referendum, WTO is the only way out.

From reading this diary anyone would think the Tory Manifesto is the most important thing in the land.. Even when it was written it was full of falsehoods and fake notions like that we could have talks about future trade with them that would run parallel with the Withdrawal stuff – all pie in the sky as we have been repeatedly told by the EU side but here it is repeated again today by our host..the mind boggles that this kind of misinformation is still being peddled. Also the leaflets sent to peoples homes contained information that turned out to be untrue and should never have been sent by responsible government in the first place – ie. a Tory government. We the people have been repeatedly lied to with fake slogans on the side of a bus, with talk about taking back control- in itself controversial, because we have to wonder who will have this control? Government? Parliament? or the ERG..so its time instead for the people to take real control and set up a governing committee to get us out of this mess then to go about bringing in real reform about how we conduct politics in this country..it’s time for a clean sweep of the old order.

Our elected elite and their newspouts are bombarding the populace with Remain propoganda, an utter abbrogation of democratic will. I fear we will be assimilated by the BORG Collective (EU) for those Star Wars fans who remember. “Resistance is futile” was the Borg Mantra….

What is the point of reminding Mrs May about the 2017 manifesto, it is as dead as the Gettysburg Address and just as irrelevant at this point in time. You are a sarcastic chap Hefner but if it amuses you do carry on.

My point about this particular manifesto promise of respecting the referendum vote is that it is the most crucial central and important manifesto item in the last 50 years.
If this promise is refused by our MPs what future is there for voters to believe anything written in any future manifestos.

Sir John, I fear this is the end of our Conservative Party while MP’s are committing suicide while betraying their constituents, even in the North East where strong labour party representatives win every election I still vote Conservative knowing full well they have no chance of winning. In my 60 years of voting I never lost the faith, until now. I like many people I will never again support the Conservative Party. Like many Conservative who chose Brexit I shall move my membership to The Brexit Party Limited in the hope I live long enough to vote in next election. What a sad business.

2016 referendum promise – ‘This is your decision. We will implement what you decide”

If 2019 brings a re-run referendum (people’s vote) and the result is still to leave the European Union then I am sorry to say that the same remainer MPs would still do everything possible to thwart Brexit.

Right or wrong, how can they call themselves honorable MPs?

  44. ChrisS
    March 23, 2019

What you say is perfectly correct however ERG Members and supporters need to be realistic : there is now NO POSSIBILITY that the Remainer majority in Parliament will allow a WTO exit, now, or in a month’s time.

Your only choices are now :

    1. May’s deal, and live to negotiate another day but this time under a proper Brexit-led Government.

2 A much softer deal that isn’t really Brexit at all because it will come with all the limitations and costs associated with membership of the single market and customs union

    OR

    3. No Brexit at all.

There are no other realistic options. If you want to see Brexit in any form, you have to hold your collective noses and vote for this horrible deal.

    1. Original Richard
      March 24, 2019

Sorry, but as a leaver I disagree.

The EU’s WA is so bad that it should never be signed under any circumstances whatever happens next.

It means signing a treaty where we must accept EU laws and taxes without representation or veto and with no lawful means of exit, according to the AG

It was deliberately designed to be worse than remain in order to be used as the leave option against remain in a second referendum and it is. Even the Lisbon Treaty contains Article 50.

Once signed it will leave us completely naked in the following trade negotiations as the EU will not release us until they have got every single concession from us that they want. Mr. Macron has already said he will use the backstop to get complete access to our fishing waters.

The WA is the very opposite of “taking back control”. It reduces our sovereignty and means that we no longer retain the ability through the ballot box to elect and remove those who are making our laws and deciding our taxes.

It is a treaty designed by anti-democracy globalist Conservative MPs, who are not representative of the majority of the Conservative Party membership, to con the British public into thinking it is implementing Brexit.

The way forward is to not sign the WA but to accept instead a long delay, which I am certain the EU are prepared to give us in order to continue to get our ÂŁ1bn/month or more net contribution to their budget and to not disrupt their ÂŁ8bn/month trading surplus with the UK.

In the meantime I am very happy for the country to vote in the forthcoming EU MEP elections and for our PM to be able to attend and veto proposed legislation in the EU Council of Ministers which is considered damaging to UK interests, which would not be possible if we sign this “horrible” WA.

In the meantime we can continue negotiations, hopefully after December with a new PM and negotiating team.

  45. Original Richard
    March 23, 2019

The globalist Conservative MPs who are keeping Mrs. May in office as PM and still voting for her/the EU’s democracy destroying WA will kill off the Conservative Party.

They and the Party will be toast when the nation wakes up to the awfulness of signing a treaty where we must accept laws and taxes without any say or veto and from which we are unable to lawfully exit without the EU’s permission.

  46. Alison
    March 23, 2019

I see they are lining up Mr Gove to take on a caretaker PM role. They have learnt nothing. Like lemmings, he was for Mrs May’s deal for crying out loud He is for staying in the customs union. He is known as a back stabbed. Ask Boris. Andrea Leadsom would be a far better choice.

    1. Norman
      March 24, 2019

Bw, I agree – Andrea’s quiet and principled poise, supported by a few good colleagues to ward off the wolves and dogs, would be as the Balm of Gilead for our nation at this time. I remember that she was JR’s choice at the beginning, so I guess he knows that she has what it takes – at least for a caretaker role. I would be delighted to support her.

Winston Churchill, in the Commons, October 1938:

“We have suffered a total and unmitigated defeat …We are in the presence of a disaster of the first magnitude … we have sustained a defeat without a war, the consequences of which will travel far with us along our road … we have passed an awful milestone in our history, when the whole equilibrium of Europe has been deranged, and that the terrible words have for the time being been pronounced against the Western democracies: “Thou art weighed in the balance and found wanting”. And do not suppose that this is the end. This is only the beginning of the reckoning. This is only the first sip, the first foretaste of a bitter cup which will be proffered to us year by year unless by a supreme recovery of moral health… we arise again and take our stand for freedom as in the olden time.”

Wonderful quote – what a gift Churchill was, for that fateful hour in world history!
A dear lady I spoke to recently in a dementia nursing home said, ‘I want to go home to England’. I replied, ‘but you are in England, dear’. But then I corrected myself: ‘Oh, you mean the England you once knew – I am with you there : to which she smiled, as if to say, ‘at last, someone knows what I really mean!’

    Treachery Is rife is rife.
We have become just like the third world, which we were so critical about many decades ago.
This group seems made up of decent people all of us , yes lots of us are of a certain age, we have continued to believe we were still in a democracy.
We shrugged our shoulders at the likes of Clegg, Osborne and Cable, still thinking that the country had a decent back bone.
The majority voted for The Tory Manifesto.
Well in my opinion May has been talking out of both sides of her mouth with complete impunity.
The deck my friends has been rigged for decades, certainly Heath was not the first, but we are talking decades.

Decent people as we are have seen and listened to the bloody lies for decades, not doing anything about it, we have only ourselves to blame, and this especially goes for our dear MPs who have been closer to this than any of us.

Well I am sorry MPs but you not one of you , stood up scratched his head and said this is no longer G.B. Not the Country I used to know ,not one of you.

Maggy knew, she was the only man in Parliament, she saw the deck was rigged, she was the only one to try and call time.
The Establishment could not stand a loose cannon, so they damn well got rid of her !

Why the hell is this unmentionable piece of work Still peddling her lies, only my friends because The Establishment is delighted with her work.

One man, One Man Only, certainly not an MP oh no.

This man is undoubtedly intelligent, and has the shear guts to 20 years ago stand up and call this lipstick laden Pig just what it is.

This British Hero is the man who will deliver Brexit.
This mess is totally our own fault, we are all gillty of turning the other way, we all knew things were not right.

You want Brexit, it is unlickly to come without Nigel Farage, he brought the Referendum! No one else.
Decent MPs should join him, Parliament is now where The State and the people were 400 years ago , Yes it is friends
