Mr John Redwood (Wokingham) (Con): Will the Secretary of State tell us how much the Government propose to spend on the project during this Parliament, and will she confirm that no construction contracts will be let during this Parliament?
The Secretary of State for Transport (Justine Greening): No construction contracts will be let during this Parliament, and my understanding is that the spend over the course of this Parliament will be in the region of a couple of hundred million pounds.

As details emerge about this H2 I do believe it will be a white elephant and not worth continuing with. Why is it, that the Conservatives are going with this, it will lose votes, and many more just for the cost alone. All for 30min time saved, they all must be mad. The money would be better spent upgrading all the railways nationally and bring employment to the whole of the country not just one line and one area. Where is their sense in this, please someone tell me I’m confused.

On Question Time yesterday, on BBC 1, Justine Greening said £750k for the HS2 spend in, as I understood it, the period up to the next general election.
It would be nice to know just what the government are planning to spend and exactly over what period.
Reply: As you know, she told me £200 m for this Parliament in the Commons, where Ministers are meant to give accurate answers.
