Gas is supplying 59% of our electricity this morning. Those expensive wind turbines are having another day off.

Yesterday I and others pointed out the huge estimated cost of £35 bn a year for the government’s net zero carbon strategy is not value for money. It is also probably a bad underestimate of the amount taxpayers and energy bill payers will have to pay.

A Minister told me in the Lords that HS2 is now expected to cost £87.7 billion to £102.7 billion. The first trains will run Euston to Birmingham maybe May 2040 or December 2043.This project remains out of control, still running massively over budget and endlessly delayed.

Is Mr Burnham’s enthusiasm for more nationalisation based on the record budget overruns and delays of nationalised HS 2 or on the dreadful treatment of staff at the Post Office ? How many loss making businesses like British Steel does he think taxpayers can afford?

Will Andy Burnham today praise the majority of electors in Makerfield for voting for Brexit? Will he now set out how he will renounce the planned bad deal Re Set and start to use Brexit freedoms to back British business and growth?

Mainstream defines Manchesterism for us to warn us of what Burnham may do. It is a plan for massive state borrowing to nationalise large chunks of the economy. They think if they borrow through state corporations the bond market might not notice the surge in debt. Dream on.

“To borrow and to borrow and to borrow is not Macbeth with a heavy cold. It is Labour party policy” . Margaret Thatcher’s famous summary of Labour economics sums up what many in Labour want from Burnham.

Mainsteam's statement of Manchesterism says it is about a big increase in borrowing. Borrow to nationalise assets. Borrow for the state to invest in more projects. Borrow to pay for any losses and mistakes like HS 2. Then say this state borrowing is outside the state debt rules!

So Labour sack the only leader they have had in the last twenty years who could help them win an election. Will they now dump the Manifesto they won on? If they want to change their promises we need a General election.

Locking us into EU single market rules and taxes is not a growth strategy. It is an expensive mistake taking away freedoms we need for a growth policy that could work. It will bring dearer energy, higher taxes and more UK job losses and closures.

What would Andy Burnham do? Raise taxes more, hitting growth? Give more money and powers away to the EU to damage us more? Nationalise more, increasing spending to have more HS 2 and Post Office style disasters? Short change our defence?

Labour would be wrong to push out the PM to welcome an alternative whose ideas and policy hints will make things worse. Andy Burnham should at least be tested by a leadership election to see if he can come up with any better things to do than Starmer.

Labour MPs can change their leader but they cannot change their 2024 Manifesto promises. If a new leader wants to tear up promises to avoid tax rises, to smash the gangs and to cut energy bills he should first call an election. The PM is unpopular for breaking these promises.

When Conservative MPs dumped Boris they made things worse. Labour should learn from the mistakes of the last Parliament with 3 Prime Ministers and too many disruptive changes of Ministers. Ministers need to be in a post longer and need support and mentoring by No 10.

Labour MPs should insist on a leadership election to test out Andy Burnham and debate what change is needed. Burnham’s stated policies and his flip flopping would make things worse.

The best thing a new PM could do is to remove Mr Miliband from Energy and out of the Treasury. His rip off energy prices, huge net zero costs and wish to close down all UK fossil fuels closes many factories. It sends big tax payments abroad as we switch to imports.

If Andy Burnham wants to back UK industry he has to reverse current dear energy, high taxes and bans on oil, gas, petrol and diesel cars. No sign of any Burnham policies that will pass the Makerfield test to stop de industrialisation.

The latest UK borrowing figures show the government has borrowed £7.7 bn more than OBR forecast in two months. They need to get a grip on excessive and wasteful spending. Andy Burnham’s idea of borrowing more would burden us with dearer interest bills and a possible bond crisis.

Andy Burnham has no proposals to rescue growth, jobs and prosperity. He needs to back reversing the dear energy and anti oil and gas policies, propose the repeal of the blizzard of anti business and jobs taxes Reeves has put in, and support the reform of welfare.

Today the Bank of England should stop selling bonds at a loss, clobbering taxpayers. Instead they will make heavy weather of the base rate and probably keep it the same. They usually look at the wrong things and have a record of misjudging inflation.

Why does the government have more money for benefits, for bike lanes, for more unemployed? Their disastrous high tax and net zero policies destroy jobs and close businesses. Why no more money for defence? It spends more on the costs of its excessive borrowing than defence.
