More money for social care

I held a meeting with the local government Minister to press the case for more money for social care in Wokingham.  I have received a letter today from Michael Gove to MPs confirming there will be an extra allocation of cash for social care for 2024-5 on top of the general settlement indications. I look forward to receiving the final details of Wokingham’s share of the increased spending pot.

More for one means less for someone else, yet Wokingham deserves a fitting level of social care money. Some less careful MPs just tolerate the status quo. If inefficient government hadn’t wasted so much, generous levels would be available for all.

Michael Gove is clearly an intelligent person.

Intelligent people can overestimate the importance of intelligence.

To be honest John I do not think Social care costs should be a Local Authority responsibility at all.
All Social Care should be funded by Central Government with National responsibility and criteria, which means the same rules and benefits should apply to everyone, this should avoid the post code lottery of care, treatment, funding, etc.
Yes perhaps have local management responsibilities for sensible provision, but under a National umbrella.
Example: a family member (a few years ago) qualified for Continuing Care (fully funded by the NHS) in one Local Authority area, but they did not qualify in another !
This would have been so, so wrong.
Same health problems in both areas, but totally different qualifications, solutions, funding, and treatment offered or approved.
