One of the main causes of more CO 2 output in the UK is the decision to let in an additional 750,000 people every year. Every person creates more carbon as they breathe out and as they consume products and services using fossil fuels.
I find it odd therefore that some of the people most passionate to slash UK CO 2 do not campaign equally noisily to end mass migration into the UK. It would be a great and popular way to cut our CO 2 output. With mass migration trying to get to net zero is running down an up escalator.
I recently joined a discussion of migration organised by Facts4EU and other groups in the UK and Australia. There was general agreement that both countries have allowed far too much migration posing big strains on public services and infrastructure. No wonder we need bigger water pipes, more electricity, more school places, more doctors. Far from making the UK more prosperous per capita incomes fall the more lower paid people we invite in. Coupled with the policy of taxing wealthy people out of the country it cuts our overall and average prosperity.
So lets go net zero population growth. If we invite in 750,000 extra every year we need to build 3 cities the size of Southampton every year. It is not just the homes but the shops, surgeries schools cable and pipes we need for such a large population increase. The EU 9 years ago estimated the per migrant set up and early years cost at Euro 250,000. No wonder public spending has ballooned.

But it’s nothing to do with cutting CO2 it’s all about control. The same people advocating net zero, UN, WEF etc are for mass immigration.
The western world will be destabilised leading to the rise of the other players. Islamification will continue until they become dominant and the west will go the same way as Lebanon, Afghanistan etc.
The elites will not be bothered about this because they will colonise other countries.
We are being destroyed with the tacit approval of Westminster.
March 7, 2025
Agree Ian, net zero was selected as a solution to a climate change problem. The real problem was the exponential growth in the human population in the 20th century. This led to pressure on land, water supplies, resources, wildlife, pollution…. Why do the elites not comment on this challenge?
March 7, 2025
Sir David Attenborough made a hard hitting documentary on this subject, putting the blame for all sorts of ills, including much of climate change, fair and square on over-population. He was shouted down from all sides including the UN, and has kept well clear of the subject since, although we can be sure that he has not changed is views.
March 8, 2025
Migrants from hot countries produce more CO2 when they move to cold industrialised countries because they need heating, moremotorised transport and work in industry using more energy. The NHS is employing net zero managers but causing more CO2 by recruiting from southern countries.
March 7, 2025
Agreed. It’s about destabilising nation-states; causing chaos and conflict which can only be contained by control mechanisms (surveillance, social credit, authoritarian laws) and creating a One-World-Government of the selected “Elite” who are safely above any kind of democratic accountability.
March 7, 2025
Must be so surely, even Ed Miliband cannot be a true believer in the CO2 Fiery Hell and Devil Gas religion can he? When a bit more CO2 gas of live is a net good. Even if he did only read PPE Oxon?
March 7, 2025
€ 250k per migrant? Must be more like £500,000 per migrant in reality for housing, overheads, roads, police… and that is even without all the legal costs and policing cost many need or cause.
March 7, 2025
‘ So lets go net zero population growth.’
That idea has already been sold to Western countries – even ones that in the past had healthy population growth. Birth control, plus abortion, plus euthanasia, plus the desire for two incomes to provide for a couple’s lifestyle of choice mitigate against population growth.
Third world countries never bought into the idea and are now colonising effete Western nations with the collusion of elites.
The hypocrite Duke of Edinburgh was always moaning about overpopulation, despite having four children himself and the ultimate rentier lifestyle.
What is needed in more white people/ Europeans.
Of course there will not be the sort of Net Zero population target suggested. That is not part of the globalist plan.
March 7, 2025
World population is estimated (by the U.N. last year) to increase c. 25 per cent. to peak at around 10.3 billion in 2084 so things can only get worse. So a need to be tough on CO2 producers, tough on the causes of CO2 producers?
March 7, 2025
formula57,
Nature, contrary to the narrative of those who seek control of the masses (you name the culprits, but don’t look far beyond the WEF and those influenced by them) has its way of contradicting the arrogance of mankind, which may call into question the forecast of population increase and also the need for reduction of the levels of CO2, which are at an extremely low level by historical standards.
The Western World (and the others) should give heartfelt thanks for the election of a political leader in a country of global influence (I’m not referring to the UK) who understands reality and is focused on exposing the myths and destroying the agenda of the Left which will otherwise leave the majority of us as serfs.

Trump has been given proof that 38,000 Ukrainians died in February. The Europeans need to shut up, sit down and behave themselves. Poland has already opted out of defending Europe, they will ‘defend themselves.’
Worrying times because we are in the hands of dimwits.

I am so pleased Sir John highlights the fact that income falls with excessive immigration. It is something I have been highlighting for years to institutions. Excess immigration mostly affects low-income groups and, put simply, if the supply of low income labour > demand for low income labour then low income wages will fall. But not only is it the income factor it is the rents factor too.
Excess immigration inflates rents as they all need somewhere to live. So for low income people the two biggest wealth considerations are wages and rents and both get squeezed further with every excess immigrant we let in.
I will give an example, my mother was a hotel receptionist in the 1970s (a low income job) and she had an adequate salary and could afford to live in a small flat. There is no chance of that happening today with excess immigration in hotels. Hotel receptionists wages are at rock bottom, they live in multiple shared accommodation and they have zero disposable income. Why should they have their much needed wages compressed and have to live like this? It’s the same for every low income profession across the country.
It is matter close to me as I come from poverty and I know our poor and young people should have substantially higher incomes and have substantially lower rents to help them. I also know they are the ones paying the heaviest price for excessive immigration and I think the situation is a disgrace.
March 7, 2025
I question the assumption that CO2 is the great satan, there being lots of historical evidence from ice cores to suggest it is unlikely. Having just Karcher cleaned my patio and garden furnituure I conclude that in the UK there are many unwanted elements to what we breath than an inbalance of CO2.
Your unheralded solution has great merit way beyond a reduction in an unwanted gas, though the flora of the World might have other views. I would opt for a reduction of population to post WW2 levels. Not only would it reduce the demand for services across the spectrum, but it would eliminate the very real assault on our culture that three Southamptons a year has, and is on an accelerating curve, creating. That to me would be the great plus, while I would let CO2 take its chances. The real lie has been to conflate CO2 with climate change which historically always has changed and always will. St George slaying the mythical CO2 dragon avoids the more pressing problems of acting to protect against possible problems of changes in climate. Impoverishing ourselves in the process is the ultimate political insanity.

A CO2 figure per migrant would be an amusing way to poke fun at both issues, and their adherests. Migration supporters could be invited to pay carbon credits (there’s a money-making opportunity for a new NGO!).
But we know both net zero and migration policies are to do with control, power and money, not CO2 or 3rd world poverty. We desperately need a British Trump and populist movement to break the blob that is ruining our country. We don’t have either yet.
March 7, 2025
Immigrants tend to come from warmer countries. It is therefore likely that their heating requirements are higher than those already here.
March 7, 2025
Good morning.
The curious thing about all this CO2 SCAM is that, those pushing this never seem to realise that CO2 is a gas and that, like illegal immigrants, has no respect for national borders.
As Ian above points out, it has nothing to do with all the things we are told. But it has everything to do with the destruction of my country.
March 7, 2025
I like it too. It is one of the factors that I’ve often tried to raise with my younger relatives (the, we’re smarter than you we’ve been to Uni’ type) who are so saturated with the whole climate emergency that they can’t think logically.
They’ve been had. They know it to a certain extent, because raising these issues is one that gets no sensible answer, just a huff and puff and a storming off.
March 7, 2025
A big question we need to answer is how we permitted large numbers to come into the UK without the permission of the British People?
How did such an unpopular policy happen in a democracy?
March 7, 2025
How? Because this country isn’t really a democracy. You can vote for any Party you like, but under our stitched-up system, the Westminster Uni-Party wins ….. and they do not do what they “promise” in their Manifestos as the last 14 years of “Conservative” Government promising to reduce immigration has demonstrated.
March 7, 2025
And never has been!
I return time and again to Robert Michels 1911 ‘Iron Law of Oligarchy’.Look it up if you are not familiar with it.
March 7, 2025
Select your own candidates and then that is NOT SO!
Farage lives up to expectations generating vexatious cases against Rupert Lowe. Nobody has ever been able to work with Farage because he is so insecure – completely justified.
Farage has set the cause of an independent sovereign Britain back decades. He will never stop. Any man who records Birthday video messages for £75 a time is not really intending to be a serious politician. Can you imaging Trump or Putin doing same?
March 7, 2025
More than 600,000 people die in the UK each year though
March 7, 2025
And at the risk of pointing out to you (what should have been) the obvious:- in 2023 there were nearly 600,000 live births in England and Wales alone. About 30% of them to mothers not born in the Uk, btw.
March 7, 2025
It’s obviously not enough. The government has done its best this year to freeze as many pensioners into their graves as possible with cuts in their fuel allowance and rises in inflation and fuel. Be interesting to see if they have achieved their aim if they allow out excess death figures for this winter.
March 7, 2025
Just think of all that inheritance tax, and solicitors fee’s for probate
March 7, 2025
Plus the death certificates, cremation certificates and fees, stamp duty on the property sale, legal fees +20% vat and the rip off probate fees too.
March 7, 2025
John R talks so much sense.
The increase in population is terrifying, with so many implications…
March 7, 2025
No one could argue against that logic, save that the planet needs more CO2 to guarantee enough food.
March 7, 2025
Importing poverty with their immigration policies and then imposing poverty with net zero policies.
This is the policy of all but one of the major parties.
Be kind to people and be kind to the planet. How about being kind to the individual?
March 7, 2025
Been saying the same for years, if climate change is “man made” then surely the answer is to try and restrict population growth.
Would be interesting to see if there is a correlation between world population growth as a whole, and world emission increases, likewise would also be interesting to monitor country by country.
Probably too simplistic an argument, but is there a connection ?
March 7, 2025
Yes, we need Net Zero immigration. But the damage has been done and is now, probably, irreversible. Over the last few decades, since Blair dismantled our borders, the Establishment and the Westminster Uni-Party have deliberately destroyed the most socially-cohesive, peaceful, high-trust society on the planet.
Almost 4 million people have been imported since Johnson became PM, both legally and illegally. Less than 20% of them are working and even fewer are actually making a real contribution to the economy by contributing more than they are costing us.
The CO2/Net Zero lunacy is just a SCAM. If that was all we were dealing with, we could recover. But no nation can survive the kind of deliberate destruction mass immigration by people who come from incompatible cultures will cause. And that was/is the whole point of it. No branch of the Uni-Party will do anything to stop it.
March 7, 2025
Mass immigration not only adds to Co2 but also changes the demography of this country. So net zero immigration, whilst better than what we have, doesn’t go far enough.
What is needed is zero immigration, ending the replacement of the heritage British.
We have circa 2 million unemployed, plus circa 1 million NEETS. A large pool of labour to fill the tasks that politicians relentlessly claim have to filled by immigrants
March 7, 2025
Well except reducing CO2 make no sense anyway and even if it did it would be World wide CO2 that counted so these people would still be admitting CO2 just elsewhere. So burning wood at Drax and exporting our energy intensive industries makes no sense ever were CO2 causing any climate emergency (it is not).
But yes we should clearly only be accepting incoming people with high skills who can pay for themselves and their families (including the housing, infrastructure etc they will need) and very unlikely to become criminals. The government seem to have the complete reverse agenda on selecting who to take.
March 7, 2025
Note not only is CO2 not a problem, but also the government policies of wind, solar, EVs, walking, cycling, public transport, wood at Drax, heat pumps etc. save little or no Worldwide CO2 anyway after proper CO2 accounting anyway! EV for example certainly increase net CO2 given the UK energy mix and manufacturing and mineral production processes!
So why these mad vastly expensive and damaging policies?
March 7, 2025
Why will stopping 750,000 people a year coming into the UK reduce CO2 emissions ? That’s the same as saying if we close down the UK steel industry and import from China instead it will reduce CO2 emissions which you have pointed out several times is a nonsense. There are plenty of reasons for stopping immigration but Net Zero policy isn’t one of them.
Reply My policy is addressed to net zero enthusiasts who want to cut UK CO 2
March 7, 2025
Just a question: for whatever reason the total population of the Earth increases, the weather appears to be more and more random, there are wars, and because of those, fluxes of displaced population increase.
What is Sir John’s solution to these increased fluxes?
Reply I support policies that promote peace
March 7, 2025
hefner: “….the weather appears to be more and more random…”
Table 12 in Chapter 12 of the UN IPCC’s Working Group 1 (“The Science”) report shows there to be no signal for climate change beyond natural variation for precipitation, droughts or storms. Only some mild warming leading to some loss of ice and snow.
March 7, 2025
To Reply: Well said! I do too.
Anyone disagree?
March 7, 2025
@Lyn Atkinson. The British establishment and EU elites disagree.
March 7, 2025
They re NOT ‘elite’. That much is certain. Elitists if you must.
March 7, 2025
Dear Mr. Redwood,
Maths is not my strong point but 750,000 migrants per year x 250,000 Euros (approx £210,000) is about £157,500,000,000! That’s right, one hundred and fifty seven thousand, five hundred million pounds – each and every year!
I have two things to say on this:
1. No wonder the country is in such a terrible mess.
2. What is the likelihood of this new net zero policy being introduced by a UK government – of any persuasion?
Reply No sign of a government yet that would go for net zero migration. 2 parties are in favour of big cuts to net migration
March 7, 2025
The word ‘net’ is very deceptive, the British are being replaced at a faster rate than the ‘net increase’ because many British people leave each year and those who replace them are not included in the ‘net increase’.
This is a massive problem, the scale of which we can only guess.
March 7, 2025
More like £500K per migrant in reality so £450 billion the annual tax take off about 45 million average tax payers.
March 7, 2025
On the other side, we live in a country with a very low birth rate. I don’t buy the argument though that we need high immigration to offset the lack of young people coming up, when the immigrants bring in alien cultures that create social disintegration.
It does mean that we have to accept working longer, especially seeing as an ever increasing national debt will be borne by fewer people.
I advocate a policy where those who voted for the governing party bear the increase in national debt over the term divided up, and charged to each of them. That would make people think more carefully about who they vote for.
March 7, 2025
The aim seems to be to destroy the nation-state and the concept of citizenship by bringing in people from a culture who will be state-dependent in a society that has repeatedly been told that it is racist and needs to atone for the past.
March 7, 2025
Ending mass inward migration could reduce the pace of the growing unwanted effect. Reversing former excessive migration may reduce or prevent that effect, rather than merely delaying when it occurs.
Throughout the world, individuals are free to generate offspring without responsibility for whatever outcomes they may cause. In contrast, even driving a car requires both a licence and third party insurance.
Once, owing a dog needed a licence, but that was abandoned as the costs of collection were lower than the sum raised.
March 7, 2025
It seems that very few people accept the nonsense from HMG that we need so many immigrants to keep Britain running. Illegals taking food delivery jobs and suchlike does nothing for the economy.
To go further with the argument that immigrants raise our Co2 threshold, why hasn’t it occurred to the green zealots that if we re-located a million or two immigrants we’d be lowering our Co2 levels substantially.
That would be too easy – they don’t go in for logic of that type – One of the reasons sensible people know that MMCC is all hype and no substance.
So who will propose this in parliament – No doubt they would be called all sorts of hurty names and could even get cancelled, but this is yet another element of the 2 tier justice and social polices, not to mention looney ideology operating in this country.

Excellent performance by our host on GBNews yesterday, despite the limitations that this discussion format has severe limitations.
I turn to GBN because it used to offer authentic alternative views to government sponsored broadcasters, but mostly we are served by left wing panellists allowed to run on and on without much in the way of correction.
The current format is less than enjoyable. It doesn’t always allow for arguments to be expanded on. I’d much rather see, instead of arguing matches, attendees allowed to develop their ideas fully without constant interruptions.
Most panel discussion are now boring. when we just get mostly soundbites.
March 7, 2025
The at length interview of Prof Gordon Hughes by Lucy Johnstone at GBN was good. The arguments were developed with counter arguments put in a non adversarial manner. It is nearly an hour though, so perhaps too much for those with butterfly attention spans.

In 2024 gold became the standout investment performer, as economic headwinds turned to tailwinds. Supported by geopolitical tensions, rate cuts and robust central bank buying, the price of the yellow metal surged by 27% to hit record highs. So far his year it has been more of the same, with gold putting on a further increase of 10.5% in dollar terms. Many investment banks have increased their forecasts for physical gold to peak beyond $3,000 this year.
In 2025 alone, nearly $9 TRILLION of US debt needs to be refinanced at higher interest rates. This will put further pressure on government spending and the Trump second coming with tariffs, tax cuts for his billionaire chums and increased defence spending will fuel inflation.
Rising geopolitical tensions – especially the threat of confiscation of US treasuries held by nation states – is also leading to central banks’ desire to increase their gold holdings. This could accelerate under Trump as trust between nations diminishes. This is a good time to be holding un-allocated gold bullion
March 7, 2025
Yes but, SIr John, you fail to recognise the motivation behind mass migration. A few think there is an economic case but that is shortsighted, better to train up our own people. But the real driving powerful motivation is hatred of Britain’s legacy and foundation in Judeo Christianity, and hatred of Britain’s colonial past. This hatred is shared by the Woke Left socialists and political Islamists and it is what unites them. They want the old Britain gone, destroyed. This neatly aligns with the obvious effects of the Green Energy zealotry of people happy to send UK back to a pre-industrial age and who therefore see no problem with mass immigration from the developing world of people who cannot be blamed for industrial global warming. Generations of Brits have been taught this as incontrovertible truths about the dark and shameful history of Britain in schools and universities. They know little else. No wonder they won’t join the Armed Forces. Defend Britain? You must be joking.
March 7, 2025
Perhaps they don’t want to join the armed forces because these days they have a better understanding that they would be used not to defend Britain (ie its territory and the population)but rather to defend the (financial)interests of the British Establishment.

The average person (i know) breathes out about 1kg of CO2/day.
Just to put that into perspective. That number amounts to 70,000 tons of CO2/day across the UK population.
If you were concerned about CO2 (which I am not) you would certainly buy into the Malthusian concept of reducing world population which produces 8 million tonnes of CO2/day or 2.9 trillion tonnes/year.
March 7, 2025
sorry in my previous comment I had thought this blog only had a title to imply their were no net 0 policies you could get behind but clicking through from email i see you have actually written something. I thought the blank blog was rather funny but my comments can be ignored!
March 7, 2025
“I find it odd therefore that some of the people most passionate to slash UK CO 2 do not campaign equally noisily to end mass migration into the UK.”
Not odd at all as both policies are designed to impoverish the country and cause disharmony and social breakdown. Both are supported by our agitprop national broadcaster who have adopted the tactics that if you tell a big enough lie often enough people will eventually believe it.
March 7, 2025
PS:
The damage caused by mass immigration (legal and illegal) is quite obvious.
The benefits of a slightly warming planet (0.14 degrees C/decade) and increasing CO2 as we exit the Little Ice Age, and before that the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) which was just 11,000 years ago, are not so obvious especially when the national broadcaster only shows us data back to the 1970s when there was a slight drop in temperature and the broadcaster itself was even forecasting another ice age as a consequence.
Increasing temperature, as shown by climate history since the LGM benefits all life on the planet as demonstrated by those periods (Minoan, Roman & Medieval) when temperatures have been higher than today. No-one, even the national broadcaster, disputes that increasing CO2 greens the planet. So what’s not to like about our slightly warming and greening global climate and why do they want to reduce plant food and use geoengineering to cool the planet (the higher latitudes as the temperature at the equator hardly changes)?
Well, that’s obvious, too.
March 7, 2025
I read a good piece once on how smaller populations make a country wealthier (wish I had kept it). It is obvious if you take in people with other views to your own and they bring with them up to 12 children who have to be fed, watered and schooled, you are making yourself less wealthy in terms of your own health, food production needs, and schooling outlets for your own children. When will the population wake up to this basic fact?

I’d rather see depopulation here and across the World. Japan has managed this without to need to import foreign cultures that destroy their own, why can’t we?
March 7, 2025
Oh we have no culture, there are no ‘British people’ and we are complete failures who would have imploded if we had not been ‘helped’ by immigrants. That’s exactly what a German ‘friend’ told us after the Brexit vote in 2016.
March 7, 2025
I agree with Sir John.
But we also need to work on native population. So many don’t want to work. Tattoos. Dysfunctional families. Eat and drink rubbish and don’t take exercise. Depression. Bad attitude (like I witnessed in hospital, people being really rude to doctors and nurses let alone not saying please and thank you). Debt. Living in bungalows but driving Mercedes can’t afford. Not married but with children by different people. Don’t talk to neighbours or aggressive to them. And sense of patriotism is about shouting at football matches. Not in all one person. But that you can see a lot of these traits in a lot of people.
Which is why really problem in this country is cultural not political but that still needs addressing.

The UK Media is getting more stupid by the day. Or thinking we are more stupid by the day
From the Daily Telegraph “UK to supply new US-made ‘suicide drones’ to Ukraine”? how does an inanimate mechanical device commit suicide? Does that mean all the WW2 bombs that were dropped committed suicide?
..And I am becoming one of the idiots supporting this drivel through my subscriptions to them the DT
Is it any wonder that people buy into the headline rubbish on NetZero, when journalists, now just click-bait story writers pump out so much in exactitude.

‘Suicide drones’ mean they self destruct in the explosion they cause on the target. Like a bullet – they don’t come back to fly again.

March 7, 2025
My concern is that the present government seems to think that shortening lifespans is the way to tackle the population problem. Freeze granny, ensure the NHS fails to treat conditions in a timely manner. Let violence escalate on our streets. Now it seems they are contemplating sending us off to war. It is unlikely to be the migrant population that is sent to fight in large numbers.

235 criminals arrived in the UK yesterday; from the safe country of France ….every day

The immigrants will also procreate with a dominant belief that their women should have as many children as possible, otherwise they are not fulfilling their role
They will also bring with them an illusion that their men are to be respected for their gender solely and that society has many different class levels according to the amount of money they have .
These strange perceptions in the UK died out decades ago.

President Trump seems to be doing a U-turn, certainly on tariffs to a degree, and perhaps over Ukraine / Russia too, now. Good on him. I hope it’s genuine and continues. We all make mistakes. It’s the big man who can recognise when he does.
Listen people, Donald Trump needs to be supported but also challenged. Some of the people who support his daft policies like pro tariffs and anti Ukraine on this website are doing no-one a favour, least of all Donald Trump! (plus, deep down, he hates people who suck to him. Some of his biggest enemies are those who once worked for him and sucked up to him and who Donald Trump sooner or later, turned on).
Deep down people only trust and love others who both support them but also challenge them. Who are kind but also direct.
March 7, 2025
Challenge the tarriffs that Canada imposes on the USA then. Trudeau will love you for it. Canada is to the USA what Scotland is to England.
Challenge the Tariff Wall around the EU which is destroying it. They have a tariffs wall but open borders. The main objective of ‘free trade’ is the ‘free movement of goods’ so that the movement of people is not required.

What are you talking about?
What’s the EU got to do with Canada?

The evidence is in, our politicians are mad
(1) They pay farmers not to produce
(2) They pay renewable energy not to generate
(3) They fine manufacturers if they build the wrong vehicles and
(4) They expect the taxpayer to pay $120billion+ on net-zero when they say there’s no money
(5) They reduce the size of army manpower and give Mauritius the Chagos Islands & £18billion
March 7, 2025
….and
(6) They believe that Increasing taxation stops climate change
March 7, 2025
Whatever the problem, we, the Government and the Greens blame it in climate change, the universally accepted justification for everythiing which goes wrong.
