The USA regards oil and gas as central to its lifestyle and to its economic and military strength. China seeks to dominate the battery car and renewable energy markets but is busy buying up cheaper Russian gas and increasing its use of coal. It doubtless regards the EU and UK as stupid to be buying its green products made using fossil fuels to shift the use of the fuels from their economies to China’s. China has avoided firm targets to get its own CO 2 down and has spent the first decade since the Paris Treaty to cut CO 2 putting its own up.
Russia pays for its war of expansion by selling oil and gas discounted to countries willing to ignore western sanctions. India plans to grow fast buying more oil, gas and coal from any good value source. OPEC still earn a good living from fossil fuels.
Western consumers including Europeans remain wedded to gas and solid fuel heating given the high costs of electricity and in most countries battery cars are a minority taste. Most forecasters expect the world to be needing 100 m barrels of oil a day in ten years time alongside at least as much gas as is burned today.
Europe and the UK government do not wish to accept this reality. As a result they are becoming more dependent on expensive renewables, needing back up ways of providing power for all the times when the wind does not blow and the sun does not shine. There was a good reason the Uk grew richer by dumping windmills and changing to coal based steam power.
Europe and the UK by backing extreme net zero policies and over regulating digital business are putting themselves into the slow lane whilst the US and China leap ahead. Worse still the EU approach will increase world CO 2 whilst damaging themselves by denying themselves cheaper fossil fuel energy. The US grasps the need for both more electricity and more fossil fuel as the digital cloud needs huge quantities of power for its revolution.

Stupid is as stupid does. Just why Europe and tje UK are following this ruinous path is beyond comprehension. Eventually the whole scam will collide with reality and collapse. Billions are being spent enriching China and a chosen few in the west at the expense of the poorest.
We have to get rid of this Marxist bunch of chancers before lasting damage is done.
Once again the motor industry has failed to sell the mandated qota of EVs even after discounting £11,000 per unit on average. This is unsustainable and will destroy another major industry and employer.

“For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled.” Richard Feynman.
You just end up killing people either exploding teachers in the Challenger or freezing people to death who cannot afford heating. Or they die because the battery ambulances or fire engines needed recharging or caught fire and arrived too late!
January 7, 2026
“Just why Europe and tje UK are following this ruinous path is beyond comprehension.”
Well either they are mad and have really fallen for this mad devil gas religion or they are evil and do actually want to destroy the UK economy, living standards, its ability to defend itself and freeze many old people to death. Or perhaps they just think there are votes in the mad and damaging religion. Or all three perhaps? Cannot see many other explanations!
Cameron, May, Boris, his theatre studies wife, Sunak and Gove all fell for it. Gove even worshipped at St Greta’s knee(of school drop out fame) to be “educated” by her & take his orders! Also a fan of the absurdly damaging and evil VAT on school fees agenda of Bridget Phillipson.
Alas so many green crap deluded socialist in the World.
January 7, 2026
There’s plenty of data confirming Europe’s car industry is already in its death throes. Total Nissan sales are down hugely and expect the effective closure of Jaguar this year or next. Others major names are about to become mere minority brands with no European manufacturing. Watch for major dealership consolidations and resultant job losses both in the UK and EU during 2026.
January 7, 2026
Indeed well why buy a new inferior, higher tyre and road wear, EV for £40k (worth half that in a couple of years and nothing in about 8 years) when your old car (worth perhaps less than 10% of this) is a better more practical and far cheaper vehicle which plenty of life left in it. Cheaper to insure too plus the EV charge per mile 3p is coming and will surely go up to match the petrol fuel duty of circa three times this.
The only thing forcing people into EV is the vast government market rigging subsidies, congestions muggings and taxes. But even then best not to for most people! They save no CO2 in general anyway!
January 7, 2026
Jaguar effectively committed suicide with the “woke” rebranding and that ludicrous advertisement.
January 7, 2026
The EU and UK governing classes are indeed stupid. In economic terms it has resulted in a generational setback. There must be doubts whether either the EU or the UK will ever be able to recover the lost ground. Capital flight is likely to ensure that it does not.

IW: “Once again the motor industry has failed to sell the mandated qota of EVs even after discounting £11,000 per unit on average. This is unsustainable and will destroy another major industry and employer.”
Yes. the discounts to sell evs last year amounted to £5bn.

This is on top of the £15K/vehicle fines for each ice vehicle sold beyond the DESN’s sales reduction target.

Correct, net-zero is only happening in europe
January 7, 2026
Indeed the whole Starmer/Miliband & May/Boris/Cameron/Sunak Net Zero agenda was/is totally insane – this for the economy, living standards and indeed for any sound and practical defence systems for the UK. The fools are even buying impractical and vastly expensive battery ambulances cannot be long before they try to decarbonise military jets, tanks, missiles… these people are insane or evil or both!
£3,750 grant to buy a new battery electic car costing perhaps £40,000 my households four cars currently are probably worth about £10,000 in total. Not that EV do not even save CO2 when properly accounted for and when charged on typical UK electricity with typical mileage and battery life. Vastly more expensive too than just keeping your old cars going.
It seems the dire Two Tier even wants re-align with the EU and their mad war on CO2 plant, tree and crop food religion.
January 7, 2026
Lifelogic
Indeed depreciation can be the biggest loss/expense when running a car.
Our family typically purchase near new, or pre registered vehicles (usually about 30% below list price) and keep them until they become either un-reliable, or no longer economic to repair.
My last vehicle was 21 years old before it was replaced with a near new diesel, my wife’s diesel car is at present 18 years old, serviced every year and still looks and goes well.
January 7, 2026
I wonder why our governments haven’t engaged in a massive program of ‘tree’ planting ….maybe its easier to tax people
January 7, 2026
You say “Europe and the UK by backing extreme net zero policies and over regulating digital business are putting themselves into the slow lane whilst the US and China leap ahead. Worse still the EU approach will increase world CO 2 whilst damaging themselves by denying themselves cheaper fossil fuel energy.”
All Net Zero policies are extreme and totally deluded. It is not worse to increase CO2 as even a doubling of CO2 will not cause significant warming a bit more CO2 and even slightly warmer (and if would only be very slight) are both positive things especially for the UK. The world has seen far hotter and colder periods and far higher levels of CO2. The real harm is the vast cost and inconvenience of a move to wrongly called “renewable energy”. This impoverished the country and causes vast loss of oportunity costs. Far more lives could be saved per £ spent than wasting it on the war on CO2.

Bjorn Lomborg!
So British Boots will be on the ground in Ukrain says Sir Two Tier. But do we have the soldiers or even the boots? Have the orders been places with China yet?
Yet more appalling twoTier Policing and lies over the Aston Villa Maccabi Tel Aviv match I note.
January 7, 2026
One degree warmer in the UK (even a doubling of CO2 would be less than this) and a bit higher CO2 would save about 10% on heating bills, would be better for farm yields and would reduce winter excess deaths. The slightly higher CO2 would also green things with extra tree, seaweed and plant growth and so more food for animals, insects, fish… the gas of life! More people choosing to holiday in the UK perhaps too.
Drill, frack and mine please and stop moronic farce of chopping down forests to import and burn at Drax.
January 7, 2026
if this boots on the ground in Ukraine moves forward, expect retirements from the older or even newer soldiers who would see no reason to be there, bar Starmer’s ego and misguided politics.

Only the swivel eyed loonies believe in this net zero climate crap, the planet as looked after itself for billions of years and all these globalists are saying we are destroying our planet with the human intervention of a few hundred years pull the other one it’s got bells on, we have to learn to live with the hot and cold weather patterns , so the sea raises by a few inches so be it that’s what it’s always done, if people want to live nearly at sea level that’s there business move heigher , but stop blaming the human race for all its bads , in a hundred years time the population will be laughing at us saying what complete mugs we were to believe in this net zero crap
January 7, 2026
One hell of a lot of swivel eyed loons then! All but a tiny handful of MPs voted for Miliband’s climate change lunacy (not the sensible Peter Lilley, Anne Widecombe, JR). Theresa May’s insane Net Zero was just nodded through without even any vote! The Libdim’s, Greens and Labour all deluded climate alarmists still have a large share of the vote in polls

Gondwana become Africa, India and Australia over several million years. That is significant coastal erosion well before human times. Perhaps the dinosaurs were particularly fervent barbequers
January 7, 2026
I’ve lived at sea level my entire life, and for as long as I can remember, the so-called experts have said the sea will rise, and my home will be underwater. I can assure you sea levels haven’t risen at all. This is all a hoax from people with vested interests in riding the climate scam bandwagon. You have to watch Climate The Movie to see how we have been manipulated into believing this gross untruth. The most destructive thing to our planet is the continued rise in its human population, yet nothing is done about that. More and more of our farmland is being built on every year to house an increasing influx of foreigners that we don’t need. Where is the outcry from the climate scammers about this?
January 7, 2026
@LL. I was very alarmed to read the “British boots on the ground in UKraine story”. Presumably heralding our troops’ obliteration by Russian missiles or a wider nuclear MAD that wipes us all out?
The Russians reasons to invade included preventing NATO expansion into the country; it’s difficult to understand how they’d accept such a situation now, since they are slowly but surely grinding up whatever the west gives to the Ukranians to fight with, in an uneven war of attrition. The only bright point is that the debt mountain could be the undoing of the EU.
On re-reading the story, it seemed very hyped up and hedged with half-hidden caveats meaning the deployment won’t eventuate under current circumstances. I found that reassuring.
January 7, 2026
Indeed.
January 7, 2026
Our Politicians are willing to put our Boots on the ground as it gives them some status and skin in the game when they know that their actual political impact counts for nothing. You never see Spain, Italy rushing to be active partners of the willing. I fail to understand why the UK needs to get involved our forces have done their bit.
January 7, 2026
This escalation, potential escalation, gives me great concern. It’s one more step in the wrong direction.
Instead of whispering support to Zelensky, Starmer should be doing all he can to end the conflict.
Making promises may sound very innocent but it all unfortunately seems to align with Starmers purposes.
January 7, 2026
Don’t worry, Wanderer: Starmer gave himself a get-out. Anyone following the Ukraine war knows there won’t be a ceasefire – the Russians can only end this war by forcing Ukraine’s surrender. Talk of peace agreements is just political theatre. So there’ll be no British boots on the ground “after a ceasefire”.
January 7, 2026
You can bet Trump and advisers are constantly proposing ways to bring about the ‘peace’ which means Ukraine giving up or USA forcing Putin in some way to back off. How else is USA getting their hands on the natural resources there? The Venezuelan and North sea adventures plus Greenland veiled threat is demonstrating to Putin that USA will ultimately use the military strength to get its way.
January 7, 2026
The UN/USA could create another long term pointless DMZ like in Korea, Syria and Cyprus
January 7, 2026
Very well described Sir John.
We are the Oxpecker on the Elephants back, trying not to pass wind, whilst the Elephant lets rip at both ends…
I’m still angry at the stupid, posturing Starmer yesterday making promises he knows he wont have to keep (Putin will not allow NATO trrops in Ukriane) and when he doesn’t have an Army to do it any more even if it was agreed.
Kids used to shout “You and whose Army?” – the Russians just smile and think “You and what Army?”

I have absolutely no problem with developing and using, wind, wave or solar power, providing it is less expensive than existing methods, does not need a taxpayer subsidy, and has the safety back up of an alternative power source when nature fails to produce.
I certainly object to being taxed more, and forced by Government policy to pay for a deliberate subsidy to introduce such methods which cannot stand financially on their own merit.
Does anyone on government understand simple mathematics, logic, and human nature ?
January 7, 2026
China is increasing renewables but not relying on it. Therefore it is reducing its costs and suing the cheapest form of gas or electricity when available.
That seems like a sensible policy to me. Increase the amount of renewable production available while keeping more conventional means around. Do not guarantee prices and then let the market decide which to use and when.
Tesla built a market for Electric vehicles by producing cars worth having. A hybrid vehicle which offers the benefits of both forms of propulsion seems like a good purchase to me as long as it is self charging or you have a charging point.
The market can decide, it makes better decisions than governments

There is a new paper out from a researcher at Belfast University casting further doubt on the relationship between increasing CO2 and purported “climate change”. Worth reading: https://pureadmin.qub.ac.uk/ws/portalfiles/portal/655051787/CarbonEmisson_Latex.pdf?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email
The Abstract includes: “The analysis reveals a significant disconnect between the rise in annual anthropogenic CO2 emissions and the rate of temperature change. Notably, the period of the sharpest warming occurred in the early 20th century when CO2 emission levels were modest. In contrast, subsequent periods with rapidly accelerating CO2 emissions experienced slower warming or even cooling trends. These findings challenge the conventional assumption that human-induced CO2 is the primary driver of global warming.”

Over the last week of very cold weather, the extremely expensive windmills and in particular the solar panels have provided hardly any energy. If we had no gas and nuclear power to keep the country going the economy would have ground to a complete halt and hundreds of thousands would have died of the cold.
Yet we’re supposed to believe in a few short years the windmills and solar panels will meet almost our entire energy needs, whilst at the same time Government policies are going to double the demand for electricity.
And Two-Tier intends signing us up to automatically comply with the EU’s Net Zero Insanity to ensure that what remains of our manufacturing is destroyed.
When you are ennobled Sir John, is there any chance of you getting an audience with the deluded Eco Hypocrite Charles Windsor, so you can explain a few basic FACTS to him?
Reply No I will not be seeking an audience with the King. My disagreements over net zero policy are with the government who are using their powers to damage us. The government, not the King, are responsible.
January 7, 2026
Lord, Sir John, I can appreciate you will not be seeking an audience with the King. But I hope please you will be speaking to Lord Cameron, Baroness May and the 33 Conservative Peers who are members of CEN?
Reply I spoke often to David and Theresa when they were PM
January 7, 2026
Off Topic – but the major topic this morning?
So Trump is now emulating Putin land grabbing and willing to annoy the rest of the world with America’s military strength. He’s even chasing empty tankers across the atlantic while Putin sends protection forces through the bad weather ensuring some sort of confrontation soon. With China permanently threatening and creating bases around on land and sea it seems the world is being dividing up by ‘dictators’.
EU should take note as they are not even a paper tiger, any sort of defence would be over in days.
January 7, 2026
Hi. The EU is a bad idea but what is a good idea is a Europe that is made up of sovereign nations that have close relations – above all, in Security / Trade / Culture – which we should always be striving for.
SECURITY. Look at how Europe came together to defeat Napoleon.
TRADE. The Hanseatic League.
CULTURE. Shakespeare being inspired by the Italian Renaissance, Medieval Cathedrals. Handel was German but thrived in England. Spain’s Don Quixote inspiring Dickens and writers across Europe. And so on.
Not forgetting, also we share the same geographical area, similar languages (as opposed to Chinese or something), same love of football, and the same religion – Christianity.
Reply In those days Europe led the world in tec and GDP. Nit any more. It us a fast retreating backwater with EU GDP per head just half the US. Get real.
January 7, 2026
Sorry Ed but the world, its power bases, its religious spread and the military tech leaves any resemblance to those days of trench warfare only, and railway timetables rather out of date.
January 7, 2026
Hi. I said in my comment that I:
1) Oppose the EU (that it’s a ‘bad idea’)
2) Support sovereign nations in the EU (as opposed to losing sovereignty to the EU)
Surely that is real – and good reality! Best

‘Trump’ – at a certain point a leader turns either into a tyrant or into a wimp as opposed to a KING (in the cultural sense of the word i.e. as set out by arguably the greatest psychologist of all time – Carl Jung – and above all, king, in Biblical sense – that we’re all baptised, as Christians, as priests, prophets and kings) – or both.
The great reminder of this in England is the MAGNA CARTA. Magna Carta isn’t just a literal historical fact but also sums up well the English spirit of being fair-minded in the politics / the spirit of the rule of law.
Tyrants want to break this spirit of Magna Carta. Wimps fail to uphold it!

Today the Daily Telegraph printed an article outlining the operational habits of wind energy operators in Scotland which is mimicked across the whole country.
The payment by government i.e. us tax payers, to wind energy suppliers to shut their turbines down, shows the up time of the major Scottish wind farms offshore is just 23%. The rest of the time the operators are being paid to not supply because the grid can’t take the over supply of power.
Against that background our Ed Miliband is demanding we increase our build out of wind turbines? The policy is already over the hill, with cease and desist payments making up the largest part of SSE and other operator’s revenue stream.
The Net Zero folly has run its course can someone close enough to Ed Miliband let him know, please Sir John?
January 7, 2026
There was 10.2TWh of paid for wind curtailment last year, up from 8.3TWh in 2024. In addition there will have been economic curtailment at times when prices were negative, when most CFDs get no subsidy payments and wind farms delaying commencing low priced CFDs don’t want to pay to produce. Subsidies meant that many wind farms exported at negative prices, with consumers paying them to do so, despite the economic curtailment.
This chart shows the biggest paid for curtailments

It is a sad reflection on UK Prime Ministers/ governments over the last 30 years that we are in such a mess. Keir Starmer is well on the way to being the worst of a bad bunch.
You could explain to a ten-year-old why Global Warming/ Climate Change are entirely natural and have been for thousands of years, and why Net Zero is nonsense. So why do we have such an ignorant bunch of MPs who refuse to analyse, study or question the situation? I’ll say it again, what does it say about our education system, that our MPs have such closed minds?
January 7, 2026
The Earths atmosphere is 0.04% Co2. The UK contributes 1% of that. Will someone tell Mad Ed Milliband please?
January 7, 2026
Incorrect, analysis shows that the UK contributes much less than 1% (the 1% figure was from two decades ago when we had coal power stations & heavy industry), of the estimated 33% of man-made co2 (66% naturally occurring), of the 0.04% co2 in the atmosphere
January 7, 2026
33% (global manmade) of 0.04 = 0.0132%
0.5% (UK contribution) of 0.0132 = 0.000066%
UK co2 contribution is 0.000066% …..why isn’t that in the news or taught in schools ?

But why have successive governments been working towards this position for decades. A little bit at a time the plan was unrolled, without any real debate, imposed by those in power because they know best.
There are plenty of official documents that describe what net-0 will do for our manufacturing and society generally, all dressed up in fancy words to make it look less harmful than it will become. We have been duped, lied to, but on a slow scale so we wouldn’t notice the foul effects too easily.
Is it too late now? Can we still reverse the globalist’s plans or are we doomed to endure the coming reset while the rest of the world flourishes?
With so many restrictions imposed on us, we may, at the end of it all, find out that this was all about freedom – removal of it.

Am thinking we have it all wrong the incursion into Venezuela was more to do about saving the US dollar, it seems Venezuela has been accepting Chinese Yuan for the oil to China which was undermining the dollar ie. the petrodollar – and it is the same with the BRICS countries now trading more with the Yuan. The underlying problem for the US is the 33 Trillion dollar debt and how it to be serviced in the Bond markets going forward. Turns out the attack on Venezuela had nothing at all to do with drugs or terrorism either but more to do with the Bond markets and the concern at the amount of wind turbines and solar farms being built in the world today – the way I see it
January 7, 2026
The Chinese made large Belt and Road loans to Venezuela so they have been taking oil in payment.
January 7, 2026
The powerhouse of the EU economy has traditionally been Germany. Their growth has stagnated over the past five years. Having cut off Russian oil their energy costs have escalated such that industry is closing or relocating. Their is no country in the EU that could replace them because they all pray at the altar of nett zero.
Energy policy in the UK, a term of gross exageration, is one of deliberate self harm orchestrated by idiots, and totally unnecessary.
I predict it will result in even greater taxation, borrowing, money printing, and the accelerated devaluation of our collective currencies.
Outside of Europe the battle is between China and the USA as to whether the $ can remain the predominant world trading l eser. I suspect the USA will revert to a currency based on Gold.
The UK must await the collapse of socialism and a Reform led return to energy sanity and a total reset of the way our country is governed. The theme must be the acceptance by everyone of ever increasing challenge, under inspiring leadership, resulting in increasing per capita wealth.

Socialism depends upon making and keeping people poor. We’ve seen this clearly with Venezuela. Since WW2 we’ve had socialist Parliaments with only a brief respite with PM Thatcher who was removed by Parliament, not the electorate. Hence the EU was seen as an ideal way to achieve impoverishment and control and as a result we were subjected to loss of sovereignty, to large flows of money to the EU, unwanted, unnecessary, restrictive, economy damaging legislation, our industries and factories moving into the EU (and even to Turkey with EU funding!) and a £100bn/year trading deficit. When we managed, through a referendum to extricate ourselves from the EU, Parliament realised they needed another device for impoverishment and control and thus legislated into law Net Zero by 2050, another device for impoverishment and control based this time upon the disinformation that we have a climate crisis caused by burning fossil fuels. There is no crisis. Climate history shows no correlation between temperature and CO2 other than for the last 450,000 years when both CO2 and temperature have been exceptionally low, where the Antarctic Vostok ice core data shows CO2 following temperature and not vice versa. The IPCC’s Working Group 1 (“The Science”)’s Table 12 in Chapter 12 shows no signals for climate change other than some mild warming which UAH satellite data has measured to be 0.14 degrees C per decade since 1979. In addition the IPCC calculates just a mere 1.2 degrees C warming for a doubling of CO2 (see P95). Furthermore there is no CO2 explanation for entering and exiting the last ice age just 11,000 years ago, nor for warmer periods than today since exiting this most recent ice age, such as the Roman period when vines were grown by Hadrian’s Wall, nor for the Middle Ages when Greenland (note the name) was colonised by Icelandic Norsemen requiring temperatures 5 degrees C higher than today in order to grow barley.

This is what Two-Tier and the pro-EU Eco nutters want to commit us to:
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2026/01/04/berlin-power-switched-off-extreme-leftists-outage/
Three days later and a large area of Berlin, with many residents who rely on heat pumps for power, still has no electricity – during a very cold winter spell. In the future, that could be the whole of the UK.
I wonder if the Berlin Authorities will be releasing the “death from cold” figures in due course? Somehow I doubt it.
January 7, 2026
If the culprits are found they should probably be prosecuted for manslaughter if there were deaths in consequence of their actions.
January 7, 2026
There continues to be a strong correlation between energy consumption and economic performance and also between rate of growth and cost of energy.
January 7, 2026
“China has avoided firm targets to get its own CO 2 down and has spent the first decade since the Paris Treaty to cut CO 2 putting its own up.”
China is not targeted by the climate activists because it is already a communist authoritarian state. It develops and uses renewables in order to sell these to the West at cheap, fossil-fuel subsidised prices, in order to destroy their economies through de-industrialisation and to make the West dependent upon China. China has in the pipeline a further 370GW of coal plants and plans for 65% of its energy to come from coal with only 14% from renewables. Note that wind energy is almost all onshore as offshore is uneconomic.
January 7, 2026
I travel to asia for work & holiday regular and net-zero, climate change and co2 just isn’t on anybodies agenda ….its never talked about, isn’t in the news, and isn’t a policy ….they just get on with life
January 7, 2026
Indeed it is just as you describe Sir John. Perhaps when you are in Lords you will be able to discover exactly why the other Lordships are so wedded to this path.
January 7, 2026
“Worse still the EU approach will increase world CO 2 whilst damaging themselves by denying themselves cheaper fossil fuel energy.”
Correct. But climate activists are either convinced that renewables are cheaper and more reliable than fossil fuels or are convinced that any expense is justified to save the planet from extinction. Mr. Miliband believes both are true.
January 7, 2026
It wasn’t one of Miliband election stone pledges 2015 …..so whats changed …MONEY

There’s a very good article on the subject of the price and reliability of Net Zero electricity in today’s Conservative Woman. The author Roger Arthur, CEng, MIEE, MIET, claims to have held senior positions in large international companies at home and abroad, leading large projects and teams, and to have had over 30 years of experience in the electrical supply industry.
That’s 30 years more than the deluded Red Ed and those on the Climate Change Quango who are destroying our energy supply/security along with our manufacturing base.

By leaving the EU, the British people gave our politicians the chance to make the UK great again, but they have thrown this back in our faces. You only need to visit Asian countries to see that they are now streets ahead of the West. Our future shouldn’t be tied to the sclerotic, declining EU. We should be looking for new markets. Our country needs a great reset, but this won’t happen under Labour or the Tories.

First they called it Global Warming but that didn’t work, then it was the Greenhouse but that didn’t work, then it was the Ozone Layer but that didn’t work, now its Climate Change with a policy of Net-zero, now its not just temperature it the environment ….its never ending, there goals & aims keep moving, with the threat of ‘sea-rise’ with non-existent/not working monitors/dodgy data ….they want tax & control
January 7, 2026
Yes, and note how desperate are the climate activists to implement their Net Zero policies despite the global average temperature rising by only 0.14 degrees C per decade according to UAH satellite data since 1979. And even the IPCC calculating only a mere 1.2 degrees C temperature rise for a doubling of CO2. They know that cooling is coming (as predicted in the 1970s) and this will destroy their argument completely as CO2, which lags temperature, as shown by the Antarctic Vostok ice core data, will continue to rise until falling to follow temperature. They need to destroy our economy before this next cooling period starts.
January 7, 2026
“Worse still the EU approach will increase world CO 2”
Disagree strongly. CO2 is not a problem. By talking in their own terms, we cede intellectual territory to the eco-loons who parrot discredited science.
January 7, 2026
Agree – CO2 isn’t the problem
January 7, 2026
Correct. There is no evidence that adding CO2 to the current atmosphere, whether natural or anthropogenic, causes additional warming or climate change.
January 7, 2026
Sir John’s piece is right as far as it goes. The UK and Europe jumped the gun on Net Zero and have got themselves in a corner. Should have hired engineers not pseudo consultancies and madcaps.
But the fundamental problem remains – the world is heating up, Nature is showing signs of stress, population is going up and we seem to be getting less and less useful output out of the humans we have.
We look like heading for trouble but none of the world’s politicians seems able or willing to do anything that would make a difference. Perfectly reasonable, to do anything at all useful would be extremely expensive and probably ineffective anyway.
But a policy of ‘do nothing’ will look bad with screams of ‘billions will die and think of the whales’. Not good for politicians but nothing politicians are able to do will make any difference. Over a long timeframe a great many humans will probably not be born, food and feasible living space will get short and mass migrations take place whether you like it or not. But given the timescale and slow effect politicians of all stripes will be unable and unwilling to do anything, the next election is all that matters to them. You don’t have enough bombs for the Trump approach.
The best tactic for politicians is to obfuscate and deny and encourage a ‘not really serious yet’ attitude. The alternative is draconian measures – unlikely to work anyway. So sit back, enjoy the popcorn, you will be dead before things get really serious.
Eventually fusion power generation may help us but I think about 100 years before that can make a dent in our power usage and the cost!!!. We must hope Nature is resilient. Meanwhile there is the small problem of the UK/Europe economy. Cheer up, some humans will survive somewhere.

‘Electric van sales however were just a pitiful 9.4% in 2025. But worse still, total van sales were 10% down on 2024’ SMMT https://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2026/01/07/uk-van-production-down-10-as-zev-targets-bite/#more-90183
If van sales are down, that means that industry is down ? We’re killing ourselves
