They are about to stop us buying the kind of tumble dryer we want. They will tell us if we must have one it has to be a heat pump based type, entailing longer drying times especially in winter if you keep your machine in a cold place. They are dearer and may be costly to run in cold times.
They will ban new petrol and diesel cars as soon as 2030, forcing us to buy nearly new ones imported from abroad or to buy battery cars , many of the cheaper ones from the Chinese.
They are hovering over banning gas boilers more generally and have already banned them for new homes and want them out of rented property.
The government works to close roads, narrow carriageways, introduce more traffic lights, more low speed controls and other devices to try to get us out of our cars. Instead of cutting CO2 these measures greatly increase congestion, increasing fuel burn and low gear movement.
The government imposes big fuel taxes, windfall and additional rate profits taxes on oil and gas companies, VAT on fuels, carbon taxes and emissions trading costs. These all make us worse off and to destroy many UK industrial jobs.
There is a rout going on in many industries from ceramics to glass, from steel to petrochemicals, from plastics to ICE vehicle manufacture. None of this will reduce world CO2. It will just ensure the CO2 created by manufacture is made somewhere else, with additional CO2 from shipping the products and goods to us as imports, travelling many more delivery miles.
Please government put a stop to it. End all the special taxes, levies and rules. Let customers decide. We will choose more wisely than government. We will ensure many more industrial jobs stay in the UK making things we are proud to buy.
May 7, 2026
All these things should be market driven not government knows best driven with rigged markets, taxes, subsidies and bans. For some people use (who use dryers a lot) a more energy efficient but slower dryer might make sense for others like myself who rarely use our drier at all they would not. Our drier is well over 20 years old I suspect the head pump ones come with a 12 month guarantee and will not last much longer than that. They also need to consider the extra energy needed to manufacture these more complex units.
A list of some of the more insane rigged markets in the UK.
Schools, the NHS, public transport, the car EV market, banking, heating, energy, universities, drugs and vaccines, house building regs, planning, employment laws, rental laws… these all damage the economy hugely.
May 7, 2026
The other day they we getting very excited about the 2 millionth registered election car. So now about 5% of cars on the road are full electric. These do however tend to be lower mileage city cars so less than 5% of the miles driven. When you take account of the extra cost and energy to make them and the way UK energy is produced they make little sense even if you accept the C02 devil gas religion.
All the vast subsidies for “renewables” means about 8% of our total energy comes from wind and solar. But is you then account for all the extra fossil fuels needed to manufacture, connect, maintain this and adjust 5% would be nearer the true figure. The extra grid wiring alone needed to connection up wind and solar is about 180 times more than to connect up a few conventional large generators to the energy users.
The BBC with Justin Rowlatt (PPE) and Roger Harrabin (English Catz/Cantab) have been pushing one sided climate alarmist lunacy for 30+ years but recently even Rowlatt seems to be slightly grasping a few of the realities or his insane agenda.
Does Ed Miliband (and his so call “experts”) actually believe the drivel they come out with or do they know they are talking complete drivel but have some other motives? Emma Pinchbeck a Classics graduate is Chief Executive of his Climate Change Committee she seems to know less about the topic than I do about Ancient Greek.
So after all this renewables agenda and vast subsidies and rigged market we have perhaps 3% of total vehicle miles done in electric cars and about 5% after sensible adjustments of our total energy coming from intermittent Solar and Wind. The former comes mainly in Summer when least needed too. Plus much of the electricity used in this EV mileage actually come from fossil fuels anyway.
May 8, 2026
Registered “fully electric” car rather!
May 7, 2026
If you really do want to save CO2 (why would you? It is net beneficial and not “pollution” at all) then keeping you old car running is almost invariably the best way and cheapest was to do this! This despite the taxes/subsidies and market rigging by governments against this.
May 7, 2026
As of early 2026, UK electricity prices are the highest among the three at approximately $0.368/kWh for residential users. The USA has moderate costs averaging 15–17 cents ($0.15–$0.17)/kWh, while China offers the lowest costs, with residential rates around $0.08/kWh and industrial rates hovering around $0.088–$0.114/kWh.
The UK could easily have similar electricity rates to China as this is largely from burning coal. Which is also on demand power burn it as needed and could back up the rip off intermittent. Burning coal is not the cleanest but can be fairly clean and is far preferable to burning imported wood forests (young coal) at Drax which our mad government encourages & subsidises. Cheap Coal is fairly easy and cheap to transport worldwide.
May 7, 2026
@Lifelogic – observation even government cars are not EV’s. Or going further police vehicles, ambulances fire-engines. Hypocrites of the first order infest this PArlaiment
May 8, 2026
Indeed the idea of electric ambulances, fire engines and police vehicles is particularly mad. Do we really want their staff waiting around on full pay for them to charge up. Also the batteries are heavy, bulky, low range, expensive, short lived and a fire risk. Reducing space for other gear.
May 7, 2026
“They are hovering over banning gas boilers more generally and have already banned them for new homes and want them out of rented property.”
They are clearly totally mad! So we have only about 8 percent of our total energy coming from wind and solar and they want to switch people to heat-pumps powered largely by burning gas at power stations or worse still by burning wood at Drax. No in winter when heating is needed you get almost no solar. Also to do this form wind you will need a grid about 200 times larger, wind about 10 times more capacity and back up to match. Do they employ a single sensible engineer or physicist! The policy would also waste the valuable gas grid we already have. Replacing this will cost a fortune, be totally insane and take perhaps 40 years or so to do.
May 7, 2026
The government imposes big fuel taxes
Not for long hopefully the country is going down the pan with all this associated and net zero rubbish and both main political parties are to blame over the decades of shutting industry’s down and blaming the ozone layer/ climate change/ now net zero, well the people are waking up to the fact we have been and still being ripped off and now is the time for change

Net Zero is Economic Disarmament, as Kemi B said.. at least Tories and Reform now agree on this.Ed Milliband is the most dangerous man in the Cabinet
And what a fount of common sense John Redwood is

I believe new or better technologies would alleviate global warming problems if humanity survives long enough (the main danger being A.I.) to make it unadaptable to. Yet even if I were wrong any action must be global and not just encompass Western Europe or the U.K. alone. It is folly for us to suffer 100% of the consequences of decarbonisation when we in the U.K. account for roughly 1% of global carbonisation. The main population and technological centres of the world, China, U.S.A. and India are not doing much decarbonisation now and accordingly neither should we!

Consumer choice extends to government, which many local bad ones with find out to their cost and loss of existence today.
May 7, 2026
The Government can’t stop it unless the Boris Deal and Windsor Treaty with the EU are reviewed.
We are currently signed up to “non-regression” rules with the EU which means that although (technically) we can implement our own policies, they cannot be relaxed from the industry-destroying policy already in place when we semi-detached from the EU.
Following the Windsor Treachery, NI has to fully comply with all the EU’s nonsense which, because we’re governed by cowards and remainers/rejoiners, means the rest of the UK is dragged along as well.
The solution: LEAVE the EU, as the electorate recognised in 2016.

A wish we all share John, but this Labour government is not interested in what normal people want. This Labour government is only interested in International agreement and world views. Whether it is Net Zero policy, or open borders allowing unlimited migration without national restriction, Labour will not even defend our territorial interests lands we have held in concert with welcome agreement of the local populations.
Labour are on a one term mission to destroy the culture and standing of The United Kingdom and Northern Ireland on the world stage and they are doing it.
The scale of outward migration by wealth and entrepreneurs along with the educated generation looking to start adult life with optimism are leaving.
The increasing burden on the tax payers who are themselves diminishing is becoming intolerable. The need to pay migrants living costs now results in 1.5 million immigrants formally on permanent benefits never needing to contribute to the host nation they have chosen to live in.
This can not go on.
Those who are able to vote must make their votes count, they must be encouraged to go out and vote today.
Let us hope this is the beginning of the end for Labour and its destruction of Britain.
May 7, 2026
Yes it is, it’s got some way to go before it throttles the life out of us, little by little – but that is no consolation, It is happening now!
With just a few items mentioned by our host we can see where we are headed, but why would a government destroy it’s own country for a fantasy, an illusion invented by those that hate humanity?
Calling this aberration a religion of the elite and their followers does not answer the ‘Why’. Certainly there is an effort to control the masses and make us all do as we are told, but why the destruction, and why the stated aims of population control.
Extrapolation will take this country and Europe back to the dark ages in terms of food production, defence, security, general living and industry. That’s if we don’t get invaded and enslaved by some nation like China that has not been infected by this perverse social pandemic.
THIS is the tipping point. If we are to regain our future now is the time.
May 7, 2026
In the days when I used to do my own laundry, I used a spin drier after the wash. It got shirts and trousers dry enough to iron straight away, with other clothes to finish off on a clothes horse. Far more efficient than a tumble drier. Use a spin drier then finish off with a tumble drier if you must, and if it is a heat pump type you don’t need to put in a vent and waste so much heat to the universe.
May 7, 2026
The first thing to be done if our government is serious about net zero is to make a market in electricity generated by different methods at different prices.
Let the market decide which supply it wants and if it is prepared to pay for it when the wind doesn’t blow or the sun doesn’t shine. Cut the subsidies to renewables
May 7, 2026
We can vote for whoever we wish for today and it may result in Starmer leaving office but in reality it won’t change much. It will still leave us in the dead hand of these Marxist clowns who have another 2-3 years to further damage our country. Industries lost that will never return. Alien cultures imported that will never leave and that are already influencing our politics and way of life. We will be taken deeper back into the clutches of the Brussels Oligarchs and bound by treaties designed to be painful and expensive to break.
In short nothing will really change today apart from Labour fully understanding that they have only a limited time left to finally bury this country with their mindless zeolotry. I’m sure these lunatics will try very hard to do so .
May 7, 2026
The proposals for banning sale in UK of new petrol cars provides great prospects for already popular S.Korea models. They are considering moving in line with the European Union’s 2035 zero-emission mandate. Already right-hand drive sales have been growing year on year. Imports of ‘used’ cars will avoid this ban.
May 7, 2026
“They will ban new petrol and diesel cars as soon as 2030”
So people will be forced to switch to electric cars (which many cannot afford) which will be charged largely by electricity coming from gas, coal or even worse wood at Drax. Plus we have the loads of fossil fuels burned overseas to mine make these EV cars and their short lived batteries. They are also heavier so use more tyres (and particulates) and damage the roads rather more too. Plus do not even save C02 when properly accounted for. What a great plan initially by Boris/Carrie then May’s net zero pushed back to 2035 by the touch on the brakes Sunak!
Then we have the range issue, their short life span, cost, slow charging and totally impractical unless you have a parking space at your house or flat. Not that many do in cities.
May 7, 2026
If you buy an EV for say £40,000 depreciation and finance costs are likely to be about 60p a mile over the life of the vehicle with maintenance, higher insurance, higher tyre wear, maintenance, electricity… it is likely to be as much as £1 a mile. Keep you old car and you can get away with 20p a mile and cause less CO2.

By breakfast time tomorrow the majority of local election results will be known.
The 2026 United Kingdom local elections are scheduled to take place today for 5,066 English councillors across 2,969 wards and divisions on 136 English local authorities and six directly elected mayors in England. Most of these seats in England were last up for election in 2022.
I doubt the results will be a surprise to me, any local councillor or party that won within 20% majority will likely be ejected today.
May 7, 2026
Sadly I heard many will not start the count until normal working hours tomorrow, so all that excitement might be delayed.
May 7, 2026
First it was called global warming, then climate change (as a better catch all) and now net zero – all desinged to control and impoverish the majority for the benefit of a minority. This has been one massive scam and the true motives of those political zealots need urgent forensic investigation.
May 7, 2026
Net Zero is a policy that is not following the science! The latest big news is that the modelling scenarios that have been used to predict catastrophic warming have finally been deleted by the IPPC scientists (expect the UN diplomats to try and quash this as they ignored it in there last report). The likely outcome in 2100 is c1degC rise and 300mm sea level change – not catastrophic. We can easily adapt to that.

May 7, 2026
I bought a new tumble dryer recently – I worked out for a heat pump model it would take at least 5 years of use for the claimed energy savings to offset the initial higher price. That is so far in the future not to be relevant to my decision so I bought a conventional one. The difference this will make to the earth’s temperature is zero. The EU mandated heat pump models over a year ago and under the Windsor Framework that applies to Northern Ireland too so I suppose that’s part of the reason they want it to apply in the rest of the UK.

O/T: ‘Check yourself before you wreck yourself’ (by Ice Cube) and ‘Insane in the brain’ (by Cypress Hill), two of the rap titles referred to by Marco Rubio during yesterday’s (5/5) press conference in Washington DC about Iran. The Secretary of State was obviously referring to Iran but one might wonder whether there could have been another one he was thinking of? Just a guess: Could it be the one texting during the night on Truth Social with his administration the following day having to be very busy trying to make any sense of it before the guy changes his mind, yet again. Just asking.
state.gov 2026/05/05 ‘Secretary of State Marco Rubio remarks to press’
BTW the whole presentation and following questions from journalists are really interesting but quite long.

We did not vote for the Great Leap Backward. It was inflicted upon us, most recently via Theresa May’s Net Zero and originally via Ed Miliband’s Climate Change Act, the latter being an absurd overreaction to Al Gore’s decision to make himself rich from associated royalties and sinecures after being thwarted in his White House bid.
If we ask “by how much will the planet be cooled if the UK achieves Net Zero by 2050”, the only honest answer will involve meaningless fractions of a degree.
Why is the Conservative Party not denouncing this attack on quality of life in an audible and attention grabbing manner? At least Reform have pledged to repeal the lot without replacement measures.
Reply The Conservative party is opposing this vigorously, urges more domestic oil and gas and has a cheaper energy plan

https://www.cityam.com/bank-of-england-says-quantitative-easing-programme-to-cost-taxpayer-125bn/
In addition to the cost of the net zero fanaticism the cost to the taxpayer of the Bank of England selling bonds, which other national banks don’t, is estimated at £125 billion. That’s sbout £2000 per head of population. Apparently they can’t do anything about it because the Treasury under George Osborne thought it was a good idea.
Reply That is net of the profits made in early years. Losses running at £18 bn a year this Parliament.

The man acknowledged as the UK’s arch destructor, the man that kicked off all the events to destroy the UK as a nation, its people and its society. That apparently the whole of the UK Parliament agrees with as they, whatever their so-called complexion have not only refused to undo the damage he did but have taken it further, comes out and says:
“Britain risks “falling behind” global competitors such as the US and China because of Ed Miliband’s net zero drive, Sir Tony Blair has warned.
The former prime minister said the UK and EU must abandon their “climate-first, climate-only” approach in favour of cheap and reliable energy.”
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2026/05/05/britain-falling-behind-miliband-net-zero-us-china-blair/
When he gets ‘cold feet’ surely that’s a sign that the UK Parliament has just gone to far in its vindictive malicious manipulation of the UK People.
Not once has anyone costed the destruction, worked out how a nation when handicapped against the rest of the World gets to survive!

It seems there was more to Starmer’s trip to Armenia than was initially obvious.
Carney was there along with others of the ‘willing’ to formulate anti-Trump plans and declare the rules-based order will be rebuilt out of Europe — then named Louise Arbour, architect of the ICC apparatus that produced Jack Smith, as Canada’s Governor General — the UN war-crimes prosecutor who built the political and legal movement behind the International Criminal Court that was funded by that well known investor that almost broke the Bank of England.
It seems there are few politicians you could trust as far as you could throw them.
May 7, 2026
Maybe – but I’d still like to throw some of them.
May 7, 2026
If Labour can hang on until 2029, especially if Miliband becomes PM or Chancellor, will we have any industry left ?
The situation is really dire if we have to hope Starmer and Reeves remain in post !!!!!
May 7, 2026
Yes, “let people choose” by having a referendum. This will necessitate a proper debate on the issue and so put an end to the argument that that no cost in human misery is too high a price to pay to “save the planet”. CAGW is a deliberate Communist hoax and its Net Zero “solution” is designed to sabotage the West’s energy, industry and national security. It’s not an unfortunate consequence. The history of CO2 and temperature over the last 500m years since the start of the Cambrian explosion shows no correlation between CO2 and temperature except for the last 450,000 years when both have been exceptionally low and here the Antarctic Vostok ice core data shows CO2 following temperature. Thermalisation has shown the IPCC’s radiative forcing narrative to be entirely false and anyway Happer & Wijngaarden have shown using this IPCC theory that increasing atmospheric CO2 above current levels has a negligible effect. So burning fossil fuels has no effect on the climate. CO2 is merely a trace gas at 0.04% of the atmosphwere and it is water vapour, which absorbs a far greater range of the planet’s IR frequencies and is 10 to 100 times more abundant in the atmosphere than CO2, which is the major greenhouse gas which keeps us warm at the surface and radiates away to space the excess heat
May 7, 2026
“The government works to close roads, narrow carriageways, introduce more traffic lights, more low speed controls and other devices to try to get us out of our cars. Instead of cutting CO2 these measures greatly increase congestion, increasing fuel burn and low gear movement.”
Most of this can be considered as a Local Council get out of jail free project. If Councils(and it is Councils) set out to curtail car use they then don’t need to get up to speed with local infrastructure projects. They don’t need to repair or improve roads. Then on the opposite side, the only place they are seemingly permitted to earn money is fines on motorists. All these adventures induce a lazy political class, they no longer need to be concerned with a functioning community, creating wealth and a future for its inhabitants, but creating new sometimes bogus methods to punish and fine those that are generally the most productive in the Community.
May 7, 2026
Just think, the Tories/Conservatives mandated a Victim Surcharge on speeding fines of 40%. Mandated to be imposed even in circumstances were there are no ‘victims’, even cant be a victim . They set the Maximum at £2000.
By all imaginable means that is not a fine, because it is not a fine, for an infringement, that is convoluted over and above punitive punishment that is set over and above statutory fines, common justice, commonsense, just
because the UK Parliament ‘can’.
Yet in other Courts ‘criminal damage’ that effects and can cause victim injury and distress running into many thousands of pounds is classed as a misdemeanour, and the human rights of the perpetrators is put first.
The UK Parliament is the ones that are making UK Laws ‘look like an ass’ Nothing is balanced, its all about perceived political ideology. More aggressively it is about grabbing money were it can because it Parliament doesn’t know how to manage expenditure.

to make people give up their cars or buy electric
but our government have free chauffeur driven cars or any fuel is paid for by the tax payers

This appalling policy enacted in 2008 without detailed scrutiny was embraced by enthusiastic Labour, Conservative and Lib Dem politicians. The public were never consulted. Now, nearly twenty years later, with our industrial base decimated largely due to high energy costs we are seeing an increasing number of ideological Net Zero policies forced upon us. None of this makes the slightest difference to world Co2 emissions whatsoever. This was always going to be a train smash because physics and economics will always triumph ideology.
