A new poll gives a big thumbs down to closer alignment with the EU and to the Re set policy.
It is true Polls have shown understandable voter disappointment with the pathetic Brexit the UK governing establishment have created. The government and the many EU enthusiasts in the Establishment have mistaken this for support for putting the UK back under EU laws. The voters complaining about Brexit are not just the approx 20% minority who will always want us back in, but lots of voters who feel cheated by a government that will not shake off the worst features of retained EU law and policy. We voted Brexit for something better. We did not want to stay under the EU laws and taxes which kept us with slow growth and lack of innovation, losing out to the US and Asia all the time.
In a new independent poll with a good sample 59% say they do not want to surrender some powers to make our own laws and taxes to get better access to the EU single market. Only 27% think it a good idea. The agreed poll question was generous to the EU as it implied we could get better access for the sacrifice. The news from the reset talks so far is we will not get improved access whilst paying a big price in extra payments to the EU and in accepting many unhelpful laws.
This poll was commissioned by Britain Un bound, a new cross party group. I am joint chairman of the Advisory Committee with Labour’s Richard Johnson, an academic at Queen Mary London. The group includes Reform, Conservative, Labour, DUP and SNP members and contributors.

“A new poll gives a big thumbs down to closer alignment with the EU and to the Re set policy.”
Good the people are so much more sensible than most of out political leaders, the appallingly biased BBC and all the Quangos and international bodies.
So Pope Leo XIV calls on people worldwide to respect every individual “peace is based on respect for each person”. To respect all people? Murderers, warmongers, children stabbers and bombers, religious people who want to destroy all people of other faiths… I think I will stick to respecting those worth of respect myself thank Leo.
June 7, 2026
I dont think you have grasped the mood of the country John. People are far more upset than this. At a bigger picture level people are upset at the whole ruling class, the stupid ideology baked into our systems and approaches. The anti white native crap we can see everywhere. Politics not solving anything.
June 7, 2026
@iain gill – they( the class that have failed ) live in La La Land and can’t read the room
June 7, 2026
Iain
Far from making things better Politicians have made almost everything worse with more complication, expense, delay, waste, and incompetence.
June 7, 2026
LL, The people are indeed smarter than the politicians, quangos, etc. Unfortunately the will of the people has been ignored for many years. What chance a poll saying people want sovereign powers over EU dictat actually gets Starmer to change tack?
June 7, 2026
@Lifelogic -‘political leaders’? puppets and slaves of a foreign power is what they appear to demonstrate. In fear of the people, in fear of democracy
June 8, 2026
‘Gaining’ better access to the EU is equivalent to buying a special pass to a covert Supermarket with blacked-out windows and an unexpected fee at the door. It is one where products are packed in odd weights, labelled in 17 foreign languages but no English, in minute type needing a magnifying glass to read all its warnings. Its trolleys would have square wheels and seven padlocks to open its compartments every time something is put in or taken out. The checkouts would be manned with dodgy personnel in balaclavas with a grimace underneath, who frisk you down and take whatever they want out of your wallet or purse and add VAT, then kick your behind all the way to the exit.
June 7, 2026
Yes, but are all the cross party group Brexiteers , or , are they a mixture of Remainers and Brexiteers?
Reply They support an independent self governing UK
June 7, 2026
I have now read nearly all of your new book, all sensible stuff except that the Conservative Party since Thatcher left has done almost none of this. Even under Thatcher they made huge mistakes John Major as Chancellor and the ERM fiasco, sticking with the NHS model, closing grammar schools, burying us further into the EU. Cameron, May, Boris and Sunak totally failed to reverse the lunacies of Blair and Brown. Worse than two world wars as Starkey sensibly puts it in his video.
I am reminded famous declaration by Sir Keith Joseph (a key intellectual mentor to Margaret Thatcher) in 1974. He famously re-evaluated his political standing and said: “I thought I was a Conservative, but now see that I was not really one at all” doing almost nothing Comservative. Nearly all Tory MPs and PMs Major, Cameron, May, Boris, Sunak, Osborne, Hammond, Hunt should all be saying and recognising this too. The party since Thatcher has been Socialist, high taxing, anti-democratic, climate alarmist, open borders to low skilled migrants, red tape spewing, tax borrow and piss down the drain merchants. Then we had the £600 billion spend doing net harm with Covid Lockdowns and net harm Covid Vaccines. They still even now claim these saved lives but the statistic are all too clear, despite their cover up attempt and refusal to release the raw data.
June 7, 2026
But even the few remaining grammar schools have been tainted for multiple reasons. For one the kids sitting the 11 plus exams from favoured demographics are given marks uplifts, so that they queue jump above the genuine clever working class kids. For two the catchment areas are taken over by those who can afford the expensive houses and the premium that comes from being in the catchment area of better schools, apart from the favoured demographics who are allowed to travel in from further away. And now its even worse as parents forced out of fee paying schools with the VAT hike are moving in many cases to target the best state schools in ruthless ways, so that in this last round the 11 plus pass mark is way higher than it was in previous years due to the numbers sitting it who would have previously gone to fee paying schools.
June 7, 2026
Indeed Peter Hitchens has a good book on this. Probably far cheaper to buy (rent) a property in a school catchment area and/or fake a suitable religion than to pay for schooling especially if like Jacob RM you have six. Plenty left then to pay for some tutoring if needed.
June 8, 2026
Renting a home close to a high performance school is effective when pupils are admitted on the basis of shortest distance as the crow flies. Moving further away after, say two years, does not deprive the pupil of the place gained.
However, pupils should be selected according to ability, then virtually all could proceed at the similarly higher pace that the school and their capabilities allow.
June 7, 2026
@Lifelogic – to me Thatcher was the last person to understand Conservatism, a Budget and serving the Nation.
The hate filled left painted her as some sort of ‘Ogre’ especially when they demanded taxpayer money for nothing in return.
We have since the Tory Party ‘kicked’ her out had a succession of left wing Parliaments that think they can keep demanding more and more taxes, keep throwing good money away and keep blaming others
June 7, 2026
Indeed in my view she won four elections the last one with Major as her chosen man. But voters rapidly realised what a dim man with a broken compass he was and we had to suffer even worse for 10+ years from Blair and Brown.
June 7, 2026
Starmer and Harmer are fanatic EU fans and care not a jot about what’s good for the nation. He will do all he can to subsume us back into the dead hand of Brussels.
Rejoining the Erasmus scheme and subsidising EU students from 27 nations just shows what plebs they are. I believe there’s an enormous amount of student loans still owed from before but hey ho, it’s only taxpayers money.
Allowing thousands to come and work over here when we have massive unemployment is madness.
The EU is becoming a technical backwater due to oppressive regulations and we should have no part of it.
We want a proper Brexit.
June 7, 2026
It looks like the government is engineering an IMF ballot the terms of which will be joining the EU and ditching the £.
This would fit in with 2TK s totalitarian approach using the IMF as a scapegoat.
June 7, 2026
@Ian Wragg – they will keep spending other peoples money while feathering their own nests
June 7, 2026
Good Morning,
It became clear to most of us that the political establishment had no intention of making a success of the vote for Brexit. There was inadequate effort to prepare industry and the economy to leave, there was no effort to put the negotiators into a strong position before negotiations began, (agreeing the payment before trade terms was ludicrous) and after leaving it appeared our senior politicians just lost interest in finding ways to exploit our new situation. Luckily, we can, if we chose, make leaving a great success, the problem lies in Westminster.
June 7, 2026
Yes, and the legislation that we cannot leave without a deal. Parliament really tucked us up well.
June 7, 2026
A new poll gives a big thumbs down to closer alignment with the EU and to the Re set policy.
You can say that again NO bloody way do I want to be part of the dreaded EU in any way or form, and the sooner these elected Buffoons in parliament get it into there thick skulls the better , if they want to be run by Brussels then move to a country inside the EU and stop trying to knock or talk us down
June 7, 2026
@Mick – they deny elections, they refuse to seek approval of direction, they have no mandate and no manifesto, but they persist. Do you think the care about the UK or its people as long as they get their own way.
June 7, 2026
They simply do not understand freedom and self motivation.Everything depends on what others are doing and saying. They are not leaders.
June 7, 2026
@MBJ – the USA this year will be celebrating 250 years of self-determination. The UK Parliament still doesn’t understand the meaning of self-determination, the right to make your own choices-democracy.
June 7, 2026
The government don’t care what voters want.
They got elected by keeping quiet and not being the Conservative Party. Now they are doing what they want.
June 7, 2026
Correct.
June 7, 2026
Align with America not Europe. The Anglosphere is our natural home.
June 7, 2026
Correct.
June 7, 2026
Correct becoming a US state is probably the best way ahead for the UK.
June 7, 2026
@Iain Gill – noting how the US States get more democracy, more independence, more self government than the tribes in the UK Parliament allow or even understand it would appear to be a safer future
June 7, 2026
@Nick – Its interesting to note the ‘Anglosphere’ as you call it doesn’t demand we pay them taxpayer money, doesn’t dictate our Laws and Rules inside our own territory. Everything is mutual, reciprocal and balanced.
June 7, 2026
I can never understand why some people imagine handing unfettered power to unelected foreign officials to rule over us is a sensible idea?
We collectively voted to restore sovereignty to the UK when we voted to leave the EU. Those who were on the vote remain side of the debate simply refused to accept they had been beaten.
Their continuous argument was the public do not know what the facts are so it was unjust to ask those citizens for their opinion in the referendum.
That attitude from the establishment and from the Public Sector in general, shows how contemptuous those ‘enlightened’ groups are for the rights of the demos to decide its own destiny.
Keep u the good work John it is more important today than ever with Starmer and Burnham and Streeting all openly saying they will return the UK to the control of the EU and do it without democratic mandate.
June 7, 2026
The people voted for Brexit. Westminster was astounded by that and immediately set about trying to reverse the decision.
Having failed to reverse the vote, Westminster set about failing to implement Brexit.
That’s where we we are ten years on from the vote. A semi Brexit.
Meanwhile Labour and Starmer are sneaking us back into the EU bit by bit.
We need a General election, pronto.
June 7, 2026
The governing establishment?
Had Cameron done what he promised to do-left the EU the day after the poll, this would have been de facto irreversible.
Had May stated a CLEAR position and stuck with it, negotiating what the British people wanted, this would have been de facto irreversible.
As it is, Johnson, Sunak were left with a hotch-potch of botched sticking plaster efforts which were difficult to overturn. The cardinal blame lays with the first two, which gave Starmer all the ammunition he needs to take us back towards the EU. When the first two relay runners cry off and fall over, the followers have an impossible task.
At just the time we needed a strong government and PM, we had the Conservatives under Cameron and May. That’s the root cause here, not the “governing establishment” per se, and is also what led to the Starmer government in the first place.
June 8, 2026
Spot on, Joe.
June 7, 2026
Good morning.
They are not listening. They will never listen.
We need Direct Democracy to strip the power away from them.
June 7, 2026
The democracy we have (a vote every few years under FPTP for MPs who lie in manifesto and do not even try to deliver is not remotely a real democracy only direct democracy is.
June 7, 2026
I don’t want to go back into the EU I want to stay out making own decisions. Now we have freedom we need to use VAT better to promote growth. I don’t mind simple things like the bottle tops a good commercial decision.
June 7, 2026
There will be no alignment – what you want is to cherry pick but you’re not going to get that either not from the EU or from America – so it’s nonsense poll stuff advised by a line up of the usual brexit rogues from past year. The better news is there’s a newer younger generation on the march who won’t be taken in by designer polls – they’ll quickly carve out their own destiny.
June 7, 2026
I’m always amazed at the capacity and stamina of our host, working so hard to establish good economic sense – Sometimes a lone voice but always true to himself and our country. He deserves our thanks.
I never heard about this poll, otherwise the numbers rejecting the EU would have been greater, but this is all an excellent tool to fight Starmer with. The website is fully functional and informative. The list of committee members is impressive.
With so many well written articles this site will be a great way to counteract the efforts to get us back under EU control.
June 7, 2026
Why seek closer alignment with the EU and to the Re set policy.?
We have plenty in common all ready:
We are ruled by protectionist elected but lying officials.
We both stick with damaging concepts and nonsense science as if fact.
We have leaders who prefer Chinese rule than American.
We ignore natural resources and prefer to import.
We both continue with dead-end policies ignoring reality.
June 7, 2026
Much truth in this list!
June 7, 2026
And the BBC and most other commentators would have us believe that all anyone wants is to be back in the EU as fast as possible. They would no doubt describe the result of your poll ‘Populist’. I cannot understand why ‘Populist’ is generally portrayed as a term of derision; is not ‘Vox populi’ the whole basis of democracy?
June 7, 2026
Populist is Latin for Democracy but is used by the powers that be to attack pleby people who push popular things that the powers that be rather disapprove of.
June 7, 2026
‘We will reset the relationship and seek to deepen ties with our European friends, neighbours and allies’ (Labour manifesto 2024). They are doing what they said they would do and they got elected on that basis. Should you not be ‘accepting’ of that, as you used to be with your so called ‘electrical revolution’, and seek to improve the reset?
Reply I oppose the way they are doing re set as it breaks their Manifesto pledges on growth, taxes and migration.
June 7, 2026
they way we gave away 85% of our fishing grounds AFTER BREXIT VOTE for nothing in return is ridiculous. the way we are paying massive prices for fish from our own waters is ridiculous.
the way we have shut our own oil and gas fields, but are buying oil and gas from Norway which is getting it from holes in the ground which are probably interconnected under the sea to out oil and gas fields is ridiculous.
but much worse than this is the massively out of control immigration when the voters have made it clear time after time they want to see far far less immigration.
the ruling classes have lost the plot completely.
June 7, 2026
It’s encouraging that after years of anti-brexit, pro-EU propoganda we get this poll result.
It probably reflects people’s rejection of big government, both supra national and national. Since Covid the anti-demos side of the establishment has been turbocharged, and after a certain time lag the reaction is now measurable.
June 7, 2026
Its just that we have a Parliament and Civil Service that want closer alignment, they all want to get back to being a Local Council, getting to back to taking the money and sitting on their hands.
Parliament is not used to managing, it doesn’t know how to manage, how to create growth, wealth and working for their electorate. They demonstrate this daily – they hate the responsibility as much as they hate those that pay and empower them.
It could even be one of the motivations for the Leadership of the UK to want to create division, socialist division and discrimination throughout the Nation. If you point out errors and inconsistency in their Socialist doctrine and how it is being imposed you are an evil hateful right wing terrorist, for getting they are the ones that seek division, discrimination. They think that creating ‘hate’ blaming others, that people will succumb to Socialism. Its the destroy mantra to create and impose will, Socialist will, straight from the WEF playbook.
The UK Parliament goes out of its way to drive motivation, innovation, enterprise from the Country. Instead when we note what the Media has to say that is supposedly coming from the members of this parliament, instead of causing growth, Parliaments focus is always to contrive new and more ways to extract Taxes. Instead of ‘managing’ their duties on expenditure they give taxpayer money away, the very ‘seed-corn’ of a nations future. They refuse a tomorrow to contrive a Socialist State. Its a Parliament dedicated to Socialism, them & us, no sense of duty, if they surrender to their unelected, unaccountable master in the EU they stand a chance of embedding/imposing Socialism without democratic choice. They stand a chance of moving up the slippery slope of their masters dotage.
All references of closer EU surrender, is a lazy Parliament that has given up. There is no Party Divide as shown time and time again – they (Parliament) never wanted leave and they have been punishing the nation ever since.
The modern Norman Conquest all over again, the rulers and the surfs.
June 7, 2026
It seems that most of the remainers have no economic arguments for Remain, athough they often present this ludicrously empty pretext, pretending not to understand the disadvantageous balance of payments. What they want is easier access for themselves to fancy-free EU travel and long-term residence, a free pass on health insurance in EU countries and the right to draw unemployment benefits in EU countries: and all without making any payments into these contributory insurance schemes for which (as I know from my own working experience on the continent) EU citizens pay through the nose.Their personal privileges will cost the UK money, but these grasshoppers will happily leave us ants to pay for it all. Certainly they do not love or commit to any of the EU countries where they engage in vanity residence enough to apply for nationality, which would solve their problem, were the problem to be a genuine one. These grasshoppers have sung for long enough. As La Fontaine’s fable has it: if they want to get warm, let them dance.
June 7, 2026
With the meeting of the E3 group of European leaders in London today it appears the dynamics have changed – for a start America is no longer in the picture and we might be getting an alignment or realignment of sorts whether we like it or not – and with PM Carney coming over to Europe next week maybe a new NATO minus the US is on the cards.
June 7, 2026
If Fabian Marxists are trying to take us into the EU we can be sure it cannot be to our benefit. They know we know this which is why they want to do it surreptitiously without a mandate.
June 8, 2026
Proponents of closer alignment and subjugation of UK to the EU do not care for the opinions of the electorate. The electorate is bovine. Socialism demands supranational government in order to avoid democratic accountability which is the greatest obstacle to socialist progress. The EU is the available short cut to global socialism. It is not about the economy.
June 8, 2026
No government have excepted the Brexit vote no government have used the chance to make Britain great
The EU will drag us down and restrict our country how can one person decide to take us back into the EU
