Euro elections confirm Brexit view

The derisory vote of under 10% for the Conservatives is a fitting epitaph for the Withdrawal Agreement. Only the Conservatives offered the Withdrawal Agreement. Anyone who wanted it would have voted Conservative. Some who didnt want it voted Conservative out of loyalty or for other ressons.

Whenever I have said in media interviews that the public have rejected the Agreement by a large majority this has been queried. This election provides more proof of the obvious. Mrs May united the country against the draft Treaty she wrongly proposed.

The Brexit party on the majority of results so far announced as I expected won more seats than the three Remain parties, the Lb Dems, Greens and Change UK combined. These new MEPs need to come to Westminster to tell MPs there how to be popular, by just getting us out of the EU with no lock back in Treaty.

The BBC seemed to think the main news of the night was the Lib Dems coming second! Once again they missed the obvious and made little of the winning view.

    Sir John,

You, along with others, rightly predicted the weakness in the vote for the Tories, undoubtedly due to the distaste by the voters for May’s WA. The concern, however, remains that sufficient Conservative MPs may still be determined to attempt to tie the UK too closely to the EU and will do anything they can during the Leadership exercise to get their way.

Your diary entry on May 25th expressed confidence that the Government, despite the current leanings of MPs, could deliver a WTO Brexit. This view was endorsed by the reassuring article dated May 22nd by Maddy Thimont Jack on the instituteforgovernment.org.uk website. At that time I felt reassured that, with the right leader, a clean Brexit was likely.

As the various contenders for PM announce themselves my concerns return. Orchestrated campaigns to prevent a ā€˜hardlineā€™ Brexiteer being appointed are already being talked about. Any candidate openly declaring that WTO is their prime aim may not achieve the leadership. Others, who might be expected to aim for the same outcome, may temper their rhetoric in order to improve their chances of becoming PM. Various candidates, to cover all bases, are talking about ā€œleaving the EU, with or without a deal, on 31st Octoberā€ Such a declaration does not prevent them accepting the putrid WA. Influences behind the scenes, deals done on the sly to gain support, may dilute the hard Brexit aims of the successful candidate. What comeback is their when that candidate, believed to be a real Brexiteer but who has not fully declared their hard Brexit goal, goes on to accept many or all of the WA surrender terms?

We have suffered the consequences of a lying PM for three years now. It is imperative that the new one is totally honest from the outset ā€“ and this includes their declarations as Leadership candidates. What if the votes of the differing factions within the Party result in the final two candidates both wishing to see an unhealthily close alliance with the EU? Not much choice there for Conservative Party members. The die will have been cast.

Another two months of sleep deprivation for me. Please reassure me if you can.

I share your concerns to some extent Pominoz but also take great comfort in one simple, now-unshakeable belief: either the next Tory PM takes us out on a clean WTO Brexit on 31st Oct or the Conservative Party is toast and the next GE will be a battle between The Brexit Party and Labour, with the latter chanting the Remain mantra and thereby losing up to 40% of their supporters who will by then finally see the party for what it truly is.

The next Conservative leader Must, absolutely Must, fully believe and publicly state that we must and will walk away from the EU under WTO rules if the EU will not move on their present position.
They must also recognise the The WA is absolutely dead.

Failure to make the above statement and believe in it, will mean The Conservatives will face a wipe out in the next General election.

It is not just the new Tory leader who needs to be honest. After seeing last night’s election coverage on BBC and Sky (the rampant left wing agenda, the spin, the lax reporting), I was livid.
Do the media and their panellists not realise that it is time to stop treating the public with contempt.
The ‘smooth spun lies’, the technique of the Blair and Campbell generation should be dispensed with; politicans should stop running away from truths – however unpalatable or unpopular; and news channels need to rediscover their professional integrity.

Mr Farage appears to be on course with his avowed aim to put the Conservative and Labour parties out of business as the dominant political forces. Based on reports and statements already made in its leadership election, the Conservative party appears ready to confirm this outcome by an act of political suicide. Ester McVey has made the most direct appeal to Brexit party voters by offering a default WTO Brexit and a redirection of Aid budget increases since 2010 into education and the police. That will cut through. The others seem to offer fudge. Fudge will not work.

Donā€™t forget that the success of the Brexit party has been forecast in polls for some time now. Remain have had lots of time to prepare damage limitation stories.

Spin on Liberal Democrat wins and time devoted to the split in the Labour Party can use airtime to crowd out the main story – namely the Brexit Party taking the largest share of the vote of any party in only a few weeks since they were formed.

Is Steve Baker not standings? Not that he is likely to win given the types of ā€˜Conservativeā€™ MPs we have.

Hammond is alas already undermining the next Conservative leader in the negotiations (on Marr). He has with May taken the party to fifth place in the EU elections- well done Hammond he is equally culpable. A wrongheaded, appalling Chancellor too. He needs compulsory lessons in negotiation skills, logic and game theory (and indeed in why places like Singapore and Hong Kong do so well with far lower simpler taxes).

As Frederick Forsyth sensibly puts in in a letter to the Telegraph today: ā€“ Those squeaking that we must ā€œtake No Deal off the tableā€ show only that they are stupidā€¦ā€¦ā€¦.. Can the Tories please just get on with it? Brits are patient folk, but there are limits, which are now extremely close.

of the suggested Tory leaders who voted for the WA. No period of grace will be
made available for any of them to string us along and keep us at the brink. In my

Conservative Party is facing an existential threat; it needs to present a united Brexit supporting face. This means removing all cabinet members who reject a WTO departure, allowing constituency committee’s to recall any member they are dissatisfied with and sack them, and above all, TELL THE TRUTH AND DO WHAT YOU PROMISE!

There is no excuse for the Conservatives or the Labour.
The Greens/Libs Dems also did very well, so congratulations to both parties too.

The number of votes cast was fairly small. Which means that Nigel Farage’s party only gained 12% of the country’s vote. Not a mandate.
The remainers also outvoted the leavers: Brexit Party took 5,244,893 votes, the combined votes of the Lib-Dems and Greens were 5,377,001.

But really. All we should be counting is the the votes of the two new parties if you what you want is a situation report on the mood for leave/remain. All other parties are mixed up in other types of politics.

Brexit won and CHUK didn’t get one MEP.

Labour is on the way out as the working class party and is now the party of immigrants in large cities. The LibDems are the party of the upper middle classes. Greens are the Party of impressionable young snowflakes. Brexit are the party of the vast majority of people in the centre ground.

Laura Kuenssberg reports these results as a win for Remain and a mandate for a second referendum.

Well, putting overt BBC bias, manipulation and agenda aside. If we’re playing that game Brexit should have 52% of the Conservative vote, 52% of the Labour vote and all of the UKIP vote (of which the public yet again rejected BNP like party but will never be thanked for it.)

The big winner, of course, is the “It’s not worth bothering to vote for an MEP” Party which came in at around 60% but wasn’t even mentioned. Moreover their voters are the only ones that got it right.

The Brexit Party winning the EU elections should be as shocking as The Brexit Party winning a general election but it isn’t. Why ?

Well that’s because the EU Parliament is shown up for being what it is, a fake parliament.

So much for it being democratic and so much for it being of any influence at all.

I listened to the BBC reporting for a time last might.

They seem to think remain just about won a close contest, and the reasoning seemed to be pile up all the other Parties votes against the Brexit Party and Ukip.
This was also the mantra of many Lib Dems, Greens and some other Party representatives.

They all failed to understand it was a low turnout, or realise that many Brexit voters failed to turn out to vote because they were disgusted at not leaving on 31st March, that this election was not run on a first past the post system., that some Labour and Conservative leave voters were still tribal in their voting.

Last night showed the huge pulling power of Farage, in six weeks from nothing to winning more than 30% of the vote.
Mrs May with her actions and policy buried the Conservative vote, but she will fail to understand why, as will the remain applicants for leadership.
There can and should be be no compromise or bringing together the people until we have actually left the EU, then and only then can we start on a new road and to a better future.

Try to compromise with ourselves before we leave, will simply weaken our position in any future EU talks.

Will the present leader of the Labour Party understand probably not.

This result is just a beginning. It can be seen as promising; given how recently the Brexit Party was formed, their share of the vote is very impressive. But this result cannot be read as a decisive endorsement of a true Brexit. The waters are muddied by the small turnout and by the ambiguity of the two legacy parties positions.

This said, it is also clear that remaining has not been decisively endorsed either. Put simply, there are those in the middle who are yet to be persuaded that a true Brexit, delivered in a less satisfactory way than was otherwise possible if the government had done its job properly, is better than either some sort of monstrous fudge,of which the WA is an example, or calling Brexit off (whether permanently or not).

What is required now, and indeed what has always been the case, is to conceive of and then execute a true Brexit that the majority of the country can get behind. Then, Brexit must then be made a success of. The people could not be blamed for voting to return to the EU if UK self governance was a disaster. In my view, the Conservative party is incapable of either of these things. A general election in which all good Brexiters (including our host) rally to the Brexit Party’s flag is the only way to articulate a true Brexit and then deliver it. Whether it can then be made a success of is another matter. The structure of the British state is hardly such that the country is ‘set up’ for success. Winning the war is the easy part. Winning the peace is something else.

Of course It’s all meaningless without a committed Brexit majority in the Commons. This is where the real power now lies.

The EU-P elections are hopefully an indicator of electoral support at the next GE. BP must build on this result but they will come under intense propaganda attacks from the Remain establishment.

I’m hoping the propaganda assault becomes overkill and forces millions of Brexit voters to abandon Marxist Labour in protest at being continually demonised and slandered by one Labour’s main political allies in London

And this is the irony. Labour’s traditional core vote that is defiantly Brexit are despised by the very party that they vote for at each and every GE. What an utterly preposterous position. It does show the levels of indoctrination many traditional Labour voters are exposed to when a GE appears on the horizon

Labour’s traditional core vote represents a massive electoral opportunity for the BP or a Tory party with ardent and determined Eurosceptic leader

My calculation a while ago was very accurate – BR 29, LD 13, LAB 14, CON 9, GR 3. The odd system has its weakness, CON will have 3 or 4 seats on a roughly 9% vote, but it remains clear that what were the 2 main parties took a hammering. Vote apathy and strongly held views delivered a resounding slap for their failure to take a decision over the EU question. The message to Labour is that they must fix a position or become even more deceitful over policies. For the Conservatives they must elect a PM who has a first task to ASAP to take us out of EU, establish trade teams to work with EU and the World separately, and adopt strategies to address possible humiliation in the next GE.

The votes lent to the Labour and Tory MEPs were based in the main on tribal support for their parties.
Who knows if the Brexit Party can add to their own count by luring more of the tribal votes in a General Election.
Tory MPs should think day by day from this day on.
If the Brexit Party attracts a few existing Tory MPs to their side and even one or two Labour MPs on a mostly singular Manifesto then they will form the next UK government.

In any event Mr Trump will trounce the EU as a trading bloc and it is hoped our Country will not sink with the EU by opposing our main ally in all things in the USA.
China will not in practice be pro-EU soon and the EU will have more problems trading there.

    Sir JR,

The electorate did not vote Conservative because of the total mess of the various factions fighting one another within the Party and not delivering some sort of sensible Brexit exit.

Saying the voters just voted against the withdrawal agreement is a misinterpretation of the result and not particularly reliable.

The conservative Party is no longer fit to govern

Amazing that you have asked all the voters since yesterday why they voted the way they did.

    10% of around 38% turnout.

No section or party should be proud or take comfort it is appalling.

When you take a view as to were the country is now headed it is frightening. So far not a single person that could be called a Conservative has shown an interest in getting us out of this mess. Then again leading what has morphed into another Liberal leftist party, in a remain Parliament would not inspire anyone that truly believes in this country or democratic freedoms.

Not particularly a fan, but maybe a Brexit Party in parliament is what is needed to shake the very roots of the broken system. To many believe rule is a right not a privilege

Congratulations to the Brexit Party. Now may the UK leave the EU as quickly as possible, maybe before Halloween.

The headline on the BBC News website is currently “Brexit Party dominates in EU elections”

I’m not sure how that makes their main story the performance of the Lib Dems…

The BBC bias is endemic and will only be cured when it is disbanded.

They have just had their Paris correspondent on saying that Macron in France had won. He then went on to say that really he had taken second place, but had won because he expected the result to be worse!

“because he expected the result to be worse” Indeed RN with 23.31% now has 23 MEPs, LREM with 22.41 % also has 23 MEPs. If you look at the history of European elections in France (www.france-politique.fr) and how it went for the governing party in those previous EEC/EU elections (since 1979), the comment is not particularly wrong. Imagine if here the CUP or Labour had as many MEPs as TBP, how would you characterize such a result?

And now let’s hope the Brexit Party wins Peterborough.

They seem to have discovered a little secret – choosing candidates who are intelligent, rational, articulate professionals respected in their respective professional field, cutting across the right-left divide for this single issue, and committed to representing the views of the majority of the people.

I wonder if this idea might ever catch on.

For those who craved for one, the Second Referendum result was announced earlier today. The Brexit party has ended up as the largest single party within the whole of the EU. The British people have spoken, again.
What other indicators will those wretched die-Hard, metathesiophobiacs now need to conjure up? And will a new PM accept that a No Deal must now become a done deal to match our decision to Leave the EU?

1.We voted three years ago to leave, the government was given the mandate by the people. The EU are bullies and you never ask bullies to tell you what you should do. You tell them. We are leaving, Article 50 was implemented and we had two years to prepare for a smooth exit. Remainers who refused to accept the diplomatic result, have acted like spoilt two year olds and tried everything possible to stop us leaving. In this situation, where there are two extreme options, there can be no compromise, it is either one ot the other. We have wasted three years now and are still in limbo, to the detriment of businesses that are unable to surely plan. This situation is despicable and should never have been condoned. If Remain had won, do you think they would have tolerated the leavers requsting terms of coming a little bit out ! It was so simple, but has been complicated unnecessarily by stubborn idiots who thought it required a deal to leave. We need to get off our knees, look them in the eye, tell them we are going and walk away with dignity and pride. Have we not been humiliated enough ?
