The PM wants to spend more. He cannot afford that. He needs to start by helping the country earn more. Increasing the number and rates of taxes in this situation will damage growth and depress revenues. Removing bans, self defeating tax rates and excessive regulation could boost growth and bring in more tax receipts.
1. Lift the ban on exploring for new oil and gas offshore and onshore. Tax revenue will flow from the exploration work and jobs created.
2. Licence Rosebank and Jackdaw fields.Immediate big tax boost as their production kicks in.
3. Allow new onshore gas away from settlements and with royalties for local property owners. Plenty of potential new tax revenue.
4. Abolish carbon taxes and emissions trading to save high energy using industries. There has been a catastrophic rate of closures of oil refineries, ceramics factories, steel plant, petrochemical works,sugar beet,fibreglass, glass and other high energy users in the last two years. Pay for this by cancelling carbon capture and storage expenditures. Saving businesses keeps tax revenue on their jobs and activities which we still need.
5. Lift the progressive ban on new diesel and petrol car making which is destroying the car industry.
6.Remove the new 50% steel tariff which is damaging steel using industries and putting up construction costs.
7.Switch farming grants to helping food growing away from environmental and solar panel based hand outs
8. Cancel the disastrous give away of our fish to the EU and offer loans and grants to expand our fishing fleet, building the boats in the UK.
9. Cancel the tourist taxes and stop Councils buying investments in property and renewables with borrowed money
10. Exempt all small shops, leisure,pubs and High Street businesses from business rates, paid for by cutting money for anti vehicle road schemes which make it difficult for customers to use the roads to get to the shops and raise business costs.

@Ian Wragg – there is irony there, those oil fields are licenced to companies owned by the Norwegian State, the rigs by the Norwegian State and employ Norwegian people. Norway then gets to sell that oil on the open market with profits being used to fund the world largest Sovereign wealth fund ($2.2 trillion). The UK just gets a kick-back on the fees but not the actual oil.
But yes they should be used, and others encouraged. The flaw is the concept of only selling to a foreign ‘spot’ market so the UK is still forced to ‘import’ still increasing World carbon emissions. That was a UK Parliament decision and as usual not prioritising common sense or the UK

@Ian Wragg – yes while those handful of direct and some indirect employees pay UK taxes, its a bit cloudier when it comes to the companies. Oslo has equal standing with Aberdeen in terms of manning and servicing. The oil doesn’t come to the UK just the payments for the licence fees.
The bit that appears out of sync is the licence is for extraction and the product sold abroad. As the UK Parliament has ensured our refineries are closed down you could say that is also an impediment. The UK with all our wonderful resources have been hung out to dry and are hostage to the political whims of foreign governments.

But if you believe in a benevolent Divine Being as I do with a sense of humour (but not to be trifled with either) and wants people to be happy (really happy) but that we also have to go on a heroic struggle, like Odysseus, in order to become properly awake (including self-sacrificial love – both soft and tough love) as a human being – through our choice – then people are going to take profoundly more seriously and joyfully their duty of being patriots, work ethic, responsibility for self, and so on. According to Professor Gordon Hughes of the Renewable Energy Foundation the UK taxpayer has already funded £220bn in renewable subsidies (£8000/household) since 2002 (2024 prices) and is currently funding £26bn/year in Net Zero subsidies. In addition NESO say their Clean Power 2030 project will cost “over £40bn annually”. It is time we had a referendum on Net Zero so that the country can be told just how much this is costing and can then make its judgement on whether this cost is worthwhile rather than it be left to climate activists and judges.

As mentioned yesterday there are options to reduce expenditure including getting rid of some quangos, making them more effective while reducing the income of those that under-perform.
Sky-high salaries need to be addressed for those in government institutions – we should be working towards imposing a ceiling that works, and which represents value for money. Any salary increase by civil servants should be seen to be earned. This is how it works in the private sector, but worse – many employees have seen their wage effectively devalued because so many have seen no increase in real terms since 1997.
It is well beyond time that collective bargaining was abolished in favour of annual assessments – give those in the public sector the opportunity to shine and be rewarded for their hard work as individuals.

Surely that would encourage some degree of growth but it seems to always be ignored. This links to overall Hospitality in many ways too.
