Questions to the advisers over the pandemic

The Chief Executive of the NHS was rarely present at the news  conferences to present the actions being taken to handle the pandemic. That was a pity, as  many of the most important matters were for those running the NHS. One of the main aims of the policy generally was to avoid  placing too much strain on NHS capacity. We needed to know how staff were going to be protected and helped to tackle this big challenge. We needed to know how all the extra money and resource was going to be deployed, how the hospitals would cope and how the virus would gradually be brought under control.

The scientific and medical advisers usually present have a close working relationship with the NHS senior administrators. They did not however see fit to give us presentations about work on finding drugs that could abate symptoms or avert  serious developments in a covid patient. They did not comment  much on why the NHS put in substantial extra  bed capacity for the pandemic, used it little and then closed it all down again before the pandemic was over. They did not comment on the underuse made of the private hospitals whose capacity the NHS bought up for the first year of the disease.

They were reluctant to be tempted to discuss improving infection control. We did not get regular reports on how they were changing and improving air extraction, UV filtration and better air management though they told us  it was an airborne disease. They decided against creating isolation hospitals that just handled covid, living with cross infection dangers in all DG hospitals. They allowed early discharge of elderly patients to care homes in the first weeks of the pandemic which may have increased the wave of infection that visited those homes.

On the whole the news conferences stuck to a routine of presenting figures for cases, hospital admissions  and deaths, and forecasts of grim news to come, followed by announcements and comments on various lockdown policies being followed. They did not do a good job bringing out the need for strong action on treatments, infection control and improving NHS capacity. They told us little about how the senior management of the NHS were using their staff and facilities, how they were managing the  covid workload or how they were ensuring fairness and safety for their medical employees facing the pandemic dangers.

Good points – but it seems the new head of the NHS is neither medical nor numerate nor good at press conferences so best keep her hidden perhaps.

A spectator podcast on Cop 26 tells us how EDF had to fire up an old coal fired power station (due to be destroyed) using coal trucked in from Russian to keep the lights (and hospital ventilators etc.) going. Great planning from the national grid and our energy department.

The brilliant Emily Thornbury then suggests “wave power” as a good back up for when there is no wind. “Whether the wind blows or not the waves are always there” she says. Well yes dear but only if you keep dropping stones into the sea though! Never underestimate the stupidity of some MPs.

Ratcliffe power station is still scheduled to be shut down next year despite the chronic lack of generation.
Scotland this week blew up Longgannet.
It is difficult to imagine such self harm and stupidity inflicted on us by a non tory government.
Every news bulletin from the Brussels Broadcasting Company tells us we need to save the NHS and the shows us deaths and hospital admissions falling.
Then we have Gove wanting to inflict plan C.

I wonder whose stupid when we have big tidal runs twice or four times a day?

      1. lifelogic
        December 12, 2021

Wave power she said not “tidal” energy! Waves are essentially the product of wind unless you drop rocks in the water, set of explosions or something similar. But tidal is not on demand either you have to use it between high and low tides or it is wasted, it is very expensive to collect and maintain, the reservoir areas silt up and neap tides give far, far less energy than spring ones do.

        1. dixie
          December 13, 2021

You are correct about tidal vs wave though there are numerous locations, the UK has around 20, where you can use tidal flow generators without the need for reservoirs.

      3. Ian Wragg
        December 12, 2021

Tide only produces power in a parabolic curve from zero at slack tide to max at rip tide.
Turbine blade erosion is serious as is silting up the barriers.
It is expensive and that’s why the Severn estuary project was abandoned because the contractors wanted a guaranteed ÂŁ150 per mw for 50 years

        1. dixie
          December 13, 2021

Accepting maintenance and intermittency, you don’t need a tidal barrage to capture the energy, there are many spots around the UK where tidal flow is available.
If we have insufficient local storage and all our gas an oil is imported then that energy can be interrupted so could also be intermittent and isn’t really on demand either, is it?

‘On the whole the news conferences stuck to a routine of presenting figures for cases, hospital admissions and deaths, and forecasts of grim news to come, followed by announcements and comments on various lockdown policies being followed. ’

Fear, slogans and clapping for the NHS suit their purposes better than offering detailed outlines of what they are doing as hostages to potential critics.

It is no different to the two sentence reply you recently received to your parliamentary question on the NHS. ‘Keep em in the dark’ is the approach.

Does the new Chief Executive of the NHS really thinks using GPs to do vaccine jabs is the best way to use these very expensively trained and experience doctors when so many people cannot even get to see a GP when they need to? If not why on earth are they doing this?

This when almost anyone on perhaps ÂŁ14 per hour could do the jabs after about 30 mins of training? Seems hugely inefficient & idiotic to me.

This puzzled me too especially in the face of the “backlog”.
But I did wonder if there was now trouble recruiting firemen and the like to do the jabbing because of various adverse reports.
I certainly would fear personal liability. ( Are Drs covered anyway?).

Exactly, it’s not rocket science to put a jab into someone arm but these GPs are fleecing the NHS to increase there bank balance, tell me why I can visit the dentist but to see a GP is like trying to get a audience with the Queen, it’s time to hit them were it hurts and cut the funding to them if they refuse to meet there obligations to see there patients

      1. Dave Andrews
        December 12, 2021

I think there is a shortage of dentists in some areas as well.
There is a general shortage of GPs (many vacancies in our area) which is probably the main reason for the difficulty in getting an appointment. I expect this problem to continue and get worse, with young people progressively kept in the dark about the world of work.

This has nothing to do with a virus and everything to do with digital ID; monitoring of the population and control.

Am I the only one who is now sick to the back teeth of all this speculation about the virus, what works what doesn’t work, masks, passports, parties, and all the rest of the daily ever changing speculation. etc etc.
I now have three jabs, I have a home testing kit to use as I choose, I also choose where I go, and who I mix with, out of choice I do not use public transport,
If I take a home test I do not bother to report a negative result to the NHS website, because it takes too much time, is a pain in the a..e, and what is the point.
I no longer use the Covid Test and Trace App as it is far too general and riddled with errors, Family members being Pinged when their neighbours had Covid on the other side of a Party Wall. !
I take what I consider sensible precautions when I go out, and wear a face covering when inside crowded indoor areas, etc.
The Government cannot control us for ever, the information is available, the jabs are available, the tests are available, information is available, soap is available, masks are available, anti bacterial gel is available, shopping can be done on line, leave us alone to get on with it !

As for bloody parties and zoom quizzes, 10 Downing Street is big office, that just happens to have the PM’s expensively decorated flat above it, of course a lot of people work there, and they are in close proximity to other fellow workers, thank goodness they are not working from home, given the poor service many companies are now giving their customers, as the Government performance is poor enough already.

It’s the Behavioural Insights Team trying to get a final push for the booster. The government is doing what it’s told, as always, and not listening to anything other than the team which has failed time and time again.

The reports about the OhmiGod (sorry, sorry) variant suggest that it is safe enough to be left to induce natural immunity in the whole population, jabbed or not, but we need to see the data on that. If it turns out to be as mild as first reports suggest then the example of measles parties from the days before the very effective measles vaccine can be followed. Number 10 can then lead by example, not by enforcement — compulsory Omicron parties might appeal to Mr Gove but not to anyone who can see the anger building up at all levels, even in the Commons.

Brilliant, Sir John. You have raised some very good questions in a politically acceptable manner. You would probably not want to ask why the MHRA yellow card system, which has so far logged over a million potential adverse reactions to the Covid vaccines, including over 1,800 deaths in the UK alone, have apparently not been followed-up and reported upon. I do know of examples. These include a steady trickle of super-fit young athletes and sports people.
There are some questions that simply get you de-platformed, whoever you are. The disgraceful distortions and lies that the ‘bought’ MSM have churned out are what is fuelling a large rump of vaccine refusals. Whilst I do have some sympathy for Boris, there has been a significant breakdown in trust across the world, due to this so-called science-led, totalitarian governmental mode.
Being well versed in infection control, I do take sensible precautions, especially for the sake of others (as I would for ‘flu or even the common cold).
However, many do not understand how politicized and biased scientists can be, especially in the biological field. I speak from experience.

Japan has added the risk of Myocarditis to the possible adverse effects of the Pfizer jab, so those receiving it are giving Informed Consent.

And the British Government has quietly issued guidance to Healthcare Professionals on the risk of Myocarditis and Pericarditis …. specifically noting that “the long-term consequences of this condition secondary to vaccination are yet unknown, so any screening recommendations need to be balanced against the frequency and severity of the disease with the aim to prevent complications, in particular of myocarditis (arrhythmias, long term myocardial damage or heart failure)”

Meanwhile, Ministers continue to repeat the mantra that the “vaccines” are safe and effective …. and now the PM wants a discussion about mandatory “vaccination” with products they know can have serious side effects and have no long-term safety data.

I’m glad your post on this subject managed to get through moderation as mine posted the other day was deleted. I was only highlighting actual data on adverse effects published, albeit forced by the US courts, by one particular vaccine manufacturer (who I won’t name because I expect this is why my post was deleted).

I asked the same question about the Yellow Card system. Why are people not being told to report adverse effects? Why are three times more women reporting side effects? Why are we seeing this in the younger age groups particularly fit athletic people?

I was listening to an Israeli doctor who said he was seeing an increasing number of young, fit patients presenting with neurological problems following vaccination. We know Israel is ahead of us and up to its fourth vaccine shot.

I am interested in this data as my own daughter was rushed into hospital following her booster. As an NHS worker, she took the vaccine early so is at the younger end for receiving the booster. We need urgent investigation before more young people are damaged. What we don’t need is for these valid discussions to be censored just because it may put some people off getting the vaccine.

Let me start by saying that I 100% agree with you that lockdowns and masks have not been shown to be effective and are likely counter-productive particularly against a rapidly spreading virus with few to no symptoms.

But imagine the outrage if these measures had not been introduced. Outrage which may even have resulted in Boris’s replacement by somebody even worse (I mean, the choice is not great!).

Boris’s best way forward now is to gather a circle of scientists who can articulate exactly why these measures are not ineffective and counter-productive, make the case to the public and then emphatically rescind those measures.

Noted Matthu, the lockdown was presented as ‘saving the NHS’ (an oxymoron in itself) although it was really ‘prevent pictures of NHS overload, as that would be translated to “Tories destroy health service” in the media.

What I’m asking for is a proper debate on these questions now, with the evidence behind us so we don’t repeat such catastrophic mistakes in the future.

PeteB – Surely the problem Sir John and other MPs face, with your questions and similar ones, is that if they put them to the government, they just get worthless answers. If questions are ever put to the ‘expert advisers’ by the tame media, they’re just softball questions that can be batted away easily. The only way forward is via a change in public opinion, for more and more people to notice the gap between the official narrative and the reality on the ground. It is happening, partly thanks to GB News and other online sources that those running the news agenda can’t control yet, but we need to be wary that the government’s so-called ‘online harms’ bill won’t choke off those alternative information sources, e.g. I don’t think they want to see many more videos from Neil Oliver.

Sir John: you make excellent points about the astonishing ineptitude of Government/Party political and Civil Service advisers regarding communication with the public.

I can’t help wondering how much it would have improved matters from the start of the pandemic had the PM and senior ministers said frankly and publicly: “we are faced with potential disasters, we have had to make fast decisions which may not be perfect when viewed in hindsight, and we ask for your co-operation. As matters develop, we may have to change procedures and we ask you to appreciate that we are dealing with a great deal of as yet unknown factors”.

Finally, in my lengthy experience of and with the NHS, there is a pervasive mindset of ‘don’t explain and don’t apologise’, which I suggest played an important factor in the complete absence of explanations for their problems.

Surely many lives could have been saved.

Many MP’s must have been aware that the modelling was a failure and that cheap and effective drugs could have been used. Now it is debateable whether the vaccines are as effective as first promised. It appears not. It seems we were failed by our representatives in Parliament as well.

The main problem was that the graphs were shown without adequate explanation. Why deaths after 28 days? How many of those in hospital infected caught the virus in hospital? How many died after that?
By far the majority of us aren’t in this hospital/care home micro-system and could have kept the economy going in a normal way for those who were, who in turn could have been isolated at far lower cost in money and lives lost.

  22. Brian Tomkinson

Many of us were asking such questions last year as the NHS became the National Covid Service. Throughout, the government has been obsessed with controlling people’s activities and instilling fear into the population as directed by behavioural scientists. The oldest trick of tyrants through the ages – instil fear and then provide reassurance that the tyrants are their saviours if only they will do exactly as the tyrants tell them. There remains one objective behind this and it is nothing to do with control of a virus. It is about state control of people by the introduction of vaccine passports leading to a Chinese style totalitarian state. This government and most MPs, for they have been willing supporters, care nothing about the harm they have inflicted on people. That the “cure” would be worse than the disease was all so predictable but brushed aside as a “conspiracy theory”. We live in dark times for our country.

They have made a difficult situation so much worse by creating an atmosphere of terror, by actions which deliberately led to many deaths in the care homes, by the indiscriminate use of ventilators and by withholding drugs which could have helped.

They have ignored advice from specialists which did not suit their vaccine policies in favour of advice from specialists with financial links to big pharma.

It helped promote the climate of fear, it helped suppress demands for more informed analysis of the pandemic and potential solutions, it helped conceal bad decisions in managing NHS resources. For those running the operation it was a winning formula. Why wouldn’t they want to stick with it regardless of the consequences for the rest of us?

We live in a sham democracy, where we are presented with two parties to choose between ….. both of which are now stuffed with young MPs, very few of whom have much experience of the world most of us live in, let alone have done anything meaningful with their lives before they chose politics as a “career.” These nodding dog MPs endorsed the policies of SAGE/NHS and Johnson ….. and most have barely raised a murmur about the devastating impact on the economy, society or the vulnerable.

    1. Martyn G
      December 12, 2021

I think you are right Dom. Something I saw elsewhere made my wonder just what has been going on since the start. In fact it pretty much confirmed my views early into the first lockdown that there was too much fear being projected by government and its medical advisors in a way that was as anti-British behaviour in a way hard to conceive.
The ONS figures for ‘Age-standardised mortality rates, deaths per 100,000 of population, England and Wales’ show little change in the numbers of death between 2008 and 2020, so why the lockdown in 2020?
Interestingly, every year since 1942 recorded a significantly higher death toll than in 2020. Think of things like the huge Flu epidemics that happened over those years and other nationwide health issues causing substantial numbers of deaths.
Governments in the past didn’t panic, didn’t create mass fear in the population, didn’t lock us down and introduce compulsory mask wearing or prevent us from seeing our dying relatives – or prevent us holding proper funerals. There were no hysterical briefings with an endless series of largely unfathomable grass and charts and governments certainly didn’t crash the economy with the destruction of so many businesses.
Conclusion? What has happened has little to do with the new virus but it is hard to conceive as to what the real purpose is. That said, what is happening elsewhere with segregating the population – those with and those without vaccination, has sinister overtones that I would not be surprised to see happening here.

How can a booster vaccine be a booster vaccine when it is a completely different vaccine type? Having another AZ vaccine would be a booster, but a Pfizer on top of AZ is nota booster. Then there are questions about what we are being told . In South Africa they say a course of Pfizer gives 23% symptomatic protection against Omicron , but here they say one dose of Pfizer gives 75% , there is a 50% credibility gap here.

  28. James Bertram
    December 12, 2021

‘They did not however see fit to give us presentations about work on finding drugs that could abate symptoms or avert serious developments in a covid patient.’

That’s because they already have the drugs to do this; the problem is that doctor’s will lose their licence if they use them, and the public are not allowed to buy them. These drugs are hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin. Japan eliminated Covid-19 in 6 weeks by the use of ivermectin (see Dr John Campbell ‘ivermectin in Japan’ youtube video 23rd November 2021); and similarly Uttar Pradesh did similarly back in June.

The government is not concerned about the public’s health; they have a different agenda entirely.

    1. Donna
      December 12, 2021

In the UK, emergency authorisation of an experimental product can only be authorised if there is no existing, licensed treatment. So in order to keep using the “vaccines” in the UK it was important that there was no alternative treatment available, hence the refusal to permit Ivermectin.

In Thailand they are using a herb, Green Chiretta, to treat people with mild Covid. The herb is a traditional medicine for respiratory illnesses. The Thai medics trialled it on inmates in prison (so effectively a closed society) and it worked so they are now carrying out more extensive trials.

There is no specific test for Omicron; if the PCR test is positive for only two out of the three markers for Covid, then it is inferred that the subject has Omicron; if three markers are considered necessary for a positive diagnosis then, there needs to be another PCR test that can test for the altered DNA sequence as well as the variants that worked originally.

Do we really want some NHS executive on our TVs who can’t even get the basic figures correct? I’m getting tired of all the threats and scaremongering. What we need is an unbiased person to look at the vast amounts of data coming out of South Africa and give an assessment of the risk from Omicron.

We need to know how many people are being rushed into hospital because of adverse effects from the vaccine. How many people are there because other serious illnesses haven’t been treated during the pandemic? The problem is that statistics can be twisted to suit the narrative this Government wants to portray when they don’t relate to the real facts. Being admitted to hospital or dying with Covid is not the same as from Covid.

Surely we now have plenty of data on how to effectively treat Covid? It’s true what people are saying in that the NHS has become the National Covid Service.

Locking us up isn’t the answer. You cannot stop Omicron as it’s highly transmissible but we do need to prepare people for it by preparing their terrain with zinc, vitamin D and C, etc ed

    1. Martyn G

Matron used to run several wards, with fewer staff, and some changed beds, fed patients, brought bedpans. We had lots of beds.
Now we have fewer beds and degree qualified ‘nurses’ who take blood pressure and temp – then spend hours updating numbers on computers. Instead of matron we have at least 6 vertical Line managers, who review the data, decide the ‘story’ and pass it up the line of ‘command’.

  39. X-Tory

The way the NHS has handled this pandemic has been – and continues to be – an absolute disgrace. Even now, over 18 months after the beginning of this problem, hospitals STILL haven’t been fitted with UV air filters, and treatments (which have been identified in studies) are STILL not available at GP surgeries! But ultimate responsibility, of course, rests with the government, and under this administration we seem to have regressed to a third-world country.

It is not for want of spending, either. Just think how much money has been thrown at nonsense such as ‘test and trace’, or furlough support, for instance. Billions, all wasted. Back in January I posted here pointing out that NICE calculates the value-for-money of treatments by using a measure known as ‘quality adjusted life years’, and authorises a maximum of ÂŁ30,000 per QALY. Ministers have never revealed how much they have spent per QALY for covid, but a year ago it was already up to ÂŁ1 MILLION, so by now I expect it is double this! The government has gone completely mad.

But first she should publicly, solemnly, pledge that she will reverse Boris Johnson’s crass betrayal and bring Northern Ireland fully back within the folds of the United Kingdom, completely free from foreign – that is to say, EU – dominion, even if that costs us a little in terms of tariffs imposed on our exports to the EU.

    https://ec.europa.eu/info/sites/default/files/economy-finance/ip144_en_1.pdf

“For the EU on average, the exit of the UK from the European Union on FTA terms is estimated to generate an output loss of around Âœ % of GDP by the end of 2022, and some 2 ÂŒ % point for the UK. Compared to the ‘WTO assumption’ that was modelled in the Autumn forecast, the EU-UK FTA reduces this negative impact for the EU on average by about 1/3 and for the UK by about 1/4. Whereas the FTA sets tariffs and quotas on goods at zero, there is a significant increase in NTBs for both goods and services. Member States with a higher share of goods trade with the UK therefore benefit relatively speaking more from the FTA than those with a higher share of trade in services. In sum, while the FTA improves the situation as compared to an outcome with no trade agreement between the EU and the UK, it cannot come close to matching the benefits of the trading relations provided by EU membership.”

Therefore the benefit to the UK of the free trade agreement, FTA, would be 2.25% of GDP divided by 3 = 0.75% of GDP.

On the EU’s model, for what it is worth, leaving on basic WTO terms without a special FTA would have cost the UK 3.00% of GDP in the long term, but the FTA will retrieve one quarter of that, 0.75% of GDP, equivalent to ÂŁ16 billion a year.”

The spreadbetting firms are giving odds of 15/1 that Johnson will lose his job after the North Shropshire by-election. The political Whatsapp group that I belong to was in overdrive today, discussing who could win a leadership election

Priti Patel – the hang ’em and flog ’em even if they are innocent candidate. Has failed to stem the tremendous number of illegal migrants and has enraged those who hold dear the right to protest. Has presided over a rapid increase in police numbers by bringing in officers of dubious moral character and honesty. No hope.

Liz Truss – the common sense candidate. Has risen rapidly to Foreign Secretary by deposing the misogynist Dominic Raab. Was recently filmed riding a foreign tank (Wallace has scrapped most of ours) like Thatcher but prone to threatening the Russians. Could make the cut

Jeremy Hunt – the political survivor candidate. Not a self-made man, he inherited most of his wealth. The longest running SoS Health ever. A safe pair of hands, has courage and stood against Johnson last time. Still ambitious, has adroitly expanded his popularity with grassroots MP’s. A front runner

Dominic Raab – the too clever by half candidate. Prone to taking holidays during military crises. No hope

Michael Gove – the mid-life crisis candidate. Has taken up clubbing and has lost a lot of weight. Completely untrustworthy. No hope

Rishi Sunak – the “I scrapped the triple lock” candidate. Fabulously wealthy, his family own more gold than the BoE. Has printed more money than any other Chancellor in history, intends to soak the working poor and the pensioners pay for it. Wildly popular with the electorate after giving them two years off work on 80% of salary. The man to beat.

Oddschecker.com are giving Sunak 9/4 as the favourite. Curiously, Sir Kier Starmer has odds of 4/1 ….!!

Let’s face it Sir John the handling of the Covid (so called) pandemic in the U.K. has been disgraceful from start to present.
There are many people and public bodies, to blame.
Yes, those running the N.H.S. failed us miserably. What would you expect? They’ll get more money whatever they (don’t) do.
Then there was SAGE, with Ferguson’s previously known, bad record, of ‘modeling’ and the then Minister, swallowing it hook line and sinker.
Opening the Nightingale hospitals but failing to staff them or give them equipment. Who’s cock up was that?
The whole scenario of running the country by diktat, handed out at press conferences, is wrong.
You have already stated your support for repealing the Corona Virus Act. You are right there.
The list of who got it wrong, disastrously wrong, goes on and on.
Was there ANY good reason for imposing any of those Lock Downs? Apparently Cummings was the chief culprit calling for them. Sweden did very well without lock downs – if you can access genuine statistical information.
Why was the ‘Great Barrington Declaration’ ruthlessly suppressed and who by? That should have prevented the Care Home scandal and the whole economy destroying, lock down policies.
Haven’t the government bribed the press to support their policies, by paying them for advertising. Then of course there is the B.B.C.!
Now of course the Covid Dictatorship is threatening more and more need for ‘Vac Passes’ supported by more and more ‘Test and Trace’ and more and more lock downs.
You can fool some of the people some of the time but many are now waking up.
It is not just over Covid that B.J. has got it so wrong is it?
He is even hotter on the Climate Change Scam.
And he has pussy footed around the illegal immigrant scandal.
For heaven’s sake – he could have got us a No Deal Brexit – if he had had the courage.

Nottingham Lad Himself has not appeared today but he mentioned people sneezing, wheezing and coughing on trains without masks.

    I ask this question.

Do people REALLY sneeze into their own masks ? And if they do what do they do afterwards ? Do they have a pocket full of them ???

The same for a good old cough.

The fact is that all these science vids show peolple sneezing in their masks but how many have a good old sneeze in a mask ? Really !!!! I have only ever seen a person take their mask off at the crucial (most video’d by scientists) moment to sneeze.

Ask yourselves. Would you really snot up in your own mask to sneeze ? And would you continue to wear it afterwards ??? How many masks do you carry ???

I think the Stratton approach to Covid is the norm.

Despite what NLH says… the most people I’ve seen (as a frequent rail traveller) who sneeze are those who take their masks off to do it and then put them back on.

What does common sense tell you, dear reader ?

I’m afraid, sadly, one reason for our too high death rate is the NHS, it has been too slow and too cautious in using new treatments, it’s legendary poor infection control spread the virus to patients in for other things, and the decision of the NHS management and doctors to discharge patients to care homes early on led to many deaths.

One thing I would add, and that is not locking down would not have meant the NHS was open to other patients, it’s inability to treat non CoVid cases is down to the large number of acute CoVid cases, that is a sad by product of an infectious disease.

Is there an unspoken fear that perhaps those who are vaccinated are at a higher risk? with this escape variant. This was raised by wise voices as a reason to not vaccinate low risk groups and instead use treatments which are freely available elsewhere.

If the vaccines are safe and have minimal risks compared to or in conjunction with a mild cold virus what is the issue? Or are we expecting a death wave caused by the vaccination rather than the virus?

For what I can see from various contributors they say they are unlikely to vote CUP at the next GE and more likely to go for Reform. Why do you not comment after those contributors, I wonder.

All the Conservative Maps objecting to further lockdown measures need to be careful in managing public expectation.

We have been incredibly lucky – so far.

If the original strain had been more deadly, as it easily could have been, we would have suffered millions of deaths and the NHS completely overwhelmed.

The current new strain looks pretty harmless and is causing very few problems and therefore further lockdown measures seem unnecessary. However, in my view, it is only a matter of time before a much more deadly strain emerges and there appears to be no planning going on to deal with that eventuality.
