The Chief Executive of the NHS was rarely present at the news conferences to present the actions being taken to handle the pandemic. That was a pity, as many of the most important matters were for those running the NHS. One of the main aims of the policy generally was to avoid placing too much strain on NHS capacity. We needed to know how staff were going to be protected and helped to tackle this big challenge. We needed to know how all the extra money and resource was going to be deployed, how the hospitals would cope and how the virus would gradually be brought under control.
The scientific and medical advisers usually present have a close working relationship with the NHS senior administrators. They did not however see fit to give us presentations about work on finding drugs that could abate symptoms or avert serious developments in a covid patient. They did not comment much on why the NHS put in substantial extra bed capacity for the pandemic, used it little and then closed it all down again before the pandemic was over. They did not comment on the underuse made of the private hospitals whose capacity the NHS bought up for the first year of the disease.
They were reluctant to be tempted to discuss improving infection control. We did not get regular reports on how they were changing and improving air extraction, UV filtration and better air management though they told us it was an airborne disease.They decided against creating isolation hospitals that just handled covid, living with cross infection dangers in all DG hospitals. They allowed early discharge of elderly patients to care homes in the first weeks of the pandemic which may have increased the wave of infection that visited those homes.
On the whole the news conferences stuck to a routine of presenting figures for cases, hospital admissions and deaths, and forecasts of grim news to come, followed by announcements and comments on various lockdown policies being followed. They did not do a good job bringing out the need for strong action on treatments, infection control and improving NHS capacity. They told us little about how the senior management of the NHS were using their staff and facilities, how they were managing the covid workload or how they were ensuring fairness and safety for their medical employees facing the pandemic dangers.

A spectator podcast on Cop 26 tells us how EDF had to fire up an old coal fired power station (due to be destroyed) using coal trucked in from Russian to keep the lights (and hospital ventilators etc.) going. Great planning from the national grid and our energy department.

Wave power she said not âtidalâ energy! Waves are essentially the product of wind unless you drop rocks in the water, set of explosions or something similar. But tidal is not on demand either you have to use it between high and low tides or it is wasted, it is very expensive to collect and maintain, the reservoir areas silt up and neap tides give far, far less energy than spring ones do.

Accepting maintenance and intermittency, you don’t need a tidal barrage to capture the energy, there are many spots around the UK where tidal flow is available.

I think there is a shortage of dentists in some areas as well.
There is a general shortage of GPs (many vacancies in our area) which is probably the main reason for the difficulty in getting an appointment. I expect this problem to continue and get worse, with young people progressively kept in the dark about the world of work.

Am I the only one who is now sick to the back teeth of all this speculation about the virus, what works what doesn’t work, masks, passports, parties, and all the rest of the daily ever changing speculation. etc etc.
I now have three jabs, I have a home testing kit to use as I choose, I also choose where I go, and who I mix with, out of choice I do not use public transport,
If I take a home test I do not bother to report a negative result to the NHS website, because it takes too much time, is a pain in the a..e, and what is the point.
I no longer use the Covid Test and Trace App as it is far too general and riddled with errors, Family members being Pinged when their neighbours had Covid on the other side of a Party Wall. !
I take what I consider sensible precautions when I go out, and wear a face covering when inside crowded indoor areas, etc.
The Government cannot control us for ever, the information is available, the jabs are available, the tests are available, information is available, soap is available, masks are available, anti bacterial gel is available, shopping can be done on line, leave us alone to get on with it !
As for bloody parties and zoom quizzes, 10 Downing Street is big office, that just happens to have the PM’s expensively decorated flat above it, of course a lot of people work there, and they are in close proximity to other fellow workers, thank goodness they are not working from home, given the poor service many companies are now giving their customers, as the Government performance is poor enough already.

Brilliant, Sir John. You have raised some very good questions in a politically acceptable manner. You would probably not want to ask why the MHRA yellow card system, which has so far logged over a million potential adverse reactions to the Covid vaccines, including over 1,800 deaths in the UK alone, have apparently not been followed-up and reported upon. I do know of examples. These include a steady trickle of super-fit young athletes and sports people.
There are some questions that simply get you de-platformed, whoever you are. The disgraceful distortions and lies that the ‘bought’ MSM have churned out are what is fuelling a large rump of vaccine refusals. Japan has added the risk of Myocarditis to the possible adverse effects of the Pfizer jab, so those receiving it are giving Informed Consent.

I’m glad your post on this subject managed to get through moderation as mine posted the other day was deleted. I was only highlighting actual data on adverse effects published, albeit forced by the US courts, by one particular vaccine manufacturer (who I won’t name because I expect this is why my post was deleted).
I asked the same question about the Yellow Card system. Why are people not being told to report adverse effects? Why are three times more women reporting side effects? Why are we seeing this in the younger age groups particularly fit athletic people?
I was listening to an Israeli doctor who said he was seeing an increasing number of young, fit patients presenting with neurological problems following vaccination. We know Israel is ahead of us and up to its fourth vaccine shot.
I am interested in this data as my own daughter was rushed into hospital following her booster. As an NHS worker, she took the vaccine early so is at the younger end for receiving the booster. We need urgent investigation before more young people are damaged. What we don’t need is for these valid discussions to be censored just because it may put some people off getting the vaccine.

Let me start by saying that I 100% agree with you that lockdowns and masks have not been shown to be effective and are likely counter-productive particularly against a rapidly spreading virus with few to no symptoms.
But imagine the outrage if these measures had not been introduced. Outrage which may even have resulted in Boris’s replacement by somebody even worse (I mean, the choice is not great!).

I can’t help wondering how much it would have improved matters from the start of the pandemic had the PM and senior ministers said frankly and publicly: “we are faced with potential disasters, we have had to make fast decisions which may not be perfect when viewed in hindsight, and we ask for your co-operation. As matters develop, we may have to change procedures and we ask you to appreciate that we are dealing with a great deal of as yet unknown factors”.
Finally, in my lengthy experience of and with the NHS, there is a pervasive mindset of ‘don’t explain and don’t apologise’, which I suggest played an important factor in the complete absence of explanations for their problems.

Many predictions, based on modelling, were made at these conferences. The majority were wildly inaccurate. Why were these failures never challenged by the media present and why indeed did they never ask why cheap and effective drugs were not allowed to be used to treat Covid patients. Surely many lives could have been saved.
Many MP’s must have been aware that the modelling was a failure and that cheap and effective drugs could have been used. Now it is debateable whether the vaccines are as effective as first promised. It appears not. It seems we were failed by our representatives in Parliament as well.

The main problem was that the graphs were shown without adequate explanation. Why deaths after 28 days? How many of those in hospital infected caught the virus in hospital? How many died after that?
By far the majority of us aren’t in this hospital/care home micro-system and could have kept the economy going in a normal way for those who were, who in turn could have been isolated at far lower cost in money and lives lost.

Throughout, the government has been obsessed with controlling people’s activities and instilling fear into the population as directed by behavioural scientists. There remains one objective behind this and it is nothing to do with control of a virus. It is about state control of people by the introduction of vaccine passports leading to a Chinese style totalitarian state. This government and most MPs, for they have been willing supporters, care nothing about the harm they have inflicted on people. That the “cure” would be worse than the disease was all so predictable but brushed aside as a “conspiracy theory”. We live in dark times for our country.

Unless, a large proportion of Tory MPs think like you on these matters, I think your Party will suffer major losses.
The only issue that I would like to add to the excellent points already raised is ;
whether the Johnson government is being deliberately or unintentionally incompetent .
They have made a difficult situation so much worse by creating an atmosphere of terror, by actions which deliberately led to many deaths in the care homes, by the indiscriminate use of ventilators and by withholding drugs which could have helped.
They have ignored advice from specialists which did not suit their vaccine policies in favour of advice from specialists with financial links to big pharma.
We need an independent review and those found guilty need to be held to account.

Alternatively the whole setup could be seen as an exercise in mushroom management where we are the mushrooms, kept in the dark and fed a diet of manure. Such an approach served several purposes. I think you are right Dom. Something I saw elsewhere made my wonder just what has been going on since the start. In fact it pretty much confirmed my views early into the first lockdown that there was too much fear being projected by government and its medical advisors in a way that was as anti-British behaviour in a way hard to conceive.
The ONS figures for âAge-standardised mortality rates, deaths per 100,000 of population, England and Walesâ show little change in the numbers of death between 2008 and 2020, so why the lockdown in 2020?
Interestingly, every year since 1942 recorded a significantly higher death toll than in 2020. Think of things like the huge Flu epidemics that happened over those years and other nationwide health issues causing substantial numbers of deaths.
Governments in the past didnât panic, didnât create mass fear in the population, didnât lock us down and introduce compulsory mask wearing or prevent us from seeing our dying relatives – or prevent us holding proper funerals. There were no hysterical briefings with an endless series of largely unfathomable grass and charts and governments certainly didnât crash the economy with the destruction of so many businesses.
Conclusion? What has happened has little to do with the new virus but it is hard to conceive as to what the real purpose is. That said, what is happening elsewhere with segregating the population – those with and those without vaccination, has sinister overtones that I would not be surprised to see happening here.

How can a booster vaccine be a booster vaccine when it is a completely different vaccine type? Having another AZ vaccine would be a booster, but a Pfizer on top of AZ is nota booster. Japan eliminated Covid-19 in 6 weeks by the use of ivermectin (see Dr John Campbell ‘ivermectin in Japan’ youtube video 23rd November 2021); and similarly Uttar Pradesh did similarly back in June.
The government is not concerned about the public’s health; they have a different agenda entirely.

In the UK, emergency authorisation of an experimental product can only be authorised if there is no existing, licensed treatment. So in order to keep using the “vaccines” in the UK it was important that there was no alternative treatment available, hence the refusal to permit Ivermectin.
In Thailand they are using a herb, Green Chiretta, to treat people with mild Covid. The herb is a traditional medicine for respiratory illnesses. The Thai medics trialled it on inmates in prison (so effectively a closed society) and it worked so they are now carrying out more extensive trials.

Do we really want some NHS executive on our TVs who canât even get the basic figures correct? Iâm getting tired of all the threats and scaremongering. What we need is an unbiased person to look at the vast amounts of data coming out of South Africa and give an assessment of the risk from Omicron.
We need to know how many people are being rushed into hospital because of adverse effects from the vaccine. How many people are there because other serious illnesses havenât been treated during the pandemic? The problem is that statistics can be twisted to suit the narrative this Government wants to portray when they donât relate to the real facts. Being admitted to hospital or dying with Covid is not the same as from Covid.

Matron used to run several wards, with fewer staff, and some changed beds, fed patients, brought bedpans. We had lots of beds.
Now we have fewer beds and degree qualified ‘nurses’ who take blood pressure and temp – then spend hours updating numbers on computers. Instead of matron we have at least 6 vertical Line managers, who review the data, decide the ‘story’ and pass it up the line of ‘command’.

The way the NHS has handled this pandemic has been – and continues to be – an absolute disgrace. Even now, over 18 months after the beginning of this problem, hospitals STILL haven’t been fitted with UV air filters, and treatments (which have been identified in studies) are STILL not available at GP surgeries! But ultimate responsibility, of course, rests with the government, and under this administration we seem to have regressed to a third-world country.
It is not for want of spending, either. Just think how much money has been thrown at nonsense such as ‘test and trace’, or furlough support, for instance. Billions, all wasted. Back in January I posted here pointing out that NICE calculates the value-for-money of treatments by using a measure known as ‘quality adjusted life years’, and authorises a maximum of ÂŁ30,000 per QALY. Ministers have never revealed how much they have spent per QALY for covid, but a year ago it was already up to ÂŁ1 MILLION, so by now I expect it is double this! The government has gone completely mad.

Iâm afraid, sadly, one reason for our too high death rate is the NHS, it has been too slow and too cautious in using new treatments, itâs legendary poor infection control spread the virus to patients in for other things, and the decision of the NHS management and doctors to discharge patients to care homes early on led to many deaths.
One thing I would add, and that is not locking down would not have meant the NHS was open to other patients, itâs inability to treat non CoVid cases is down to the large number of acute CoVid cases, that is a sad by product of an infectious disease.

I have no confidence left in Johnson or any of his government ministers – listening to him tonight all I can see is another feeble attempt to distract from his woes with this new booster programme – everybody is to be vaccinated before the end of the year just to suit Boris. For what I can see from various contributors they say they are unlikely to vote CUP at the next GE and more likely to go for Reform. Why do you not comment after those contributors, I wonder.

I think there are a few comments on here from people who would never ever vote Conservative yet give us their views about who should take over as PM and what Conservatives supporters should do.
They are of course entitled to do this.
Just as I am entitled to comment that they may be doing this to bend opinion to a deliberately wrong decision.

All the Conservative Maps objecting to further lockdown measures need to be careful in managing public expectation.
We have been incredibly lucky – so far.
If the original strain had been more deadly, as it easily could have been, we would have suffered millions of deaths and the NHS completely overwhelmed.
The current new strain looks pretty harmless and is causing very few problems and therefore further lockdown measures seem unnecessary. However, in my view, it is only a matter of time before a much more deadly strain emerges and there appears to be no planning going on to deal with that eventuality.
